    A member showed her bowls at our quilt group meeting today Another looked at me and teased that I would probably dye my rope to get an ombre look instead of covering with fabric. Now thanks to you, I may just walk into that next meeting with my ombre bowl that has been dyed. That is genius to use diluted acrylic paint. Thank you so much. I have been going down a rabbit hole watching your videos.

      @@mimitodd8781 It turned out great. I just completed it. I didn't weigh down the rope when I let it soak for about 10 minutes. So it was not all submerged. No problem, The color was more varied and I like it. It is just another option. It also shows you can goof up and it will be wonderful. I left it dry overnight on plastic Thank you for all of your help. This was fun.

    Thank you for this beginner rope bowl tutorial. SO. Helpful! Your bowls are simply stunning!!!
    I see that you’re using a cotton/poly blend rope. Not only does Walmart no longer have it in white, they don’t seem to have anything made with those materials. What would you suggest for a substitute that makes such a nice, sturdy bowl? There are so many different blends and diameters. Thanks so much. I’m excited to get started.

    Beautiful!!!! But you said something at the beginning about the paint being water based, does that mean if you ever need to wash it that the colors will fade? Or will they become permanent after a certain period?

    • @mimitodd8781
      @mimitodd8781  7 месяцев назад +1

      It is my experience working with acrylic paints that they don’t wash out. I’ve gotten paint on my clothes and even after numerous washes it’s still stained. My bigger concern about washing the rope bowl is the stiffness of the bowl may be weakened. And this could cause your bowl to become soft and loose. Hope this answers your question. Thank you!

  • @1955dmb

    I wish I had found this tutorial yesterday before I used Rit dye. What a royal pain that was and I was so afraid I would spill the dye. You pretty much have to do it near the stove because you have to use very hot water. I want to make a lot of these as gifts. But with the Rit dye I worry about it bleeding onto carpet or whatever is under it if it gets wet by chance - because that stuff is powerful. Have you had a chance to test your method with the bowls getting wet and if so, how they react? I absolutely loved this ombre effect and the colors you chose. I like the way you finished it too. I'm working on making charms out of clay as a unique way to finish it. Thanks so much for this great tutorial. It was really well done.

    • @mimitodd8781
      @mimitodd8781  3 года назад +2

      Thank you for your comments! I chose the paint because Rit dye was way too much of a mess and its permanent! I haven’t checked with the bowl getting wet but the clothesline rope is made for outdoor use so I think it would be ok. I am also looking at ways to making it a more harder bowl after sewing it. Researching varnishes to see which would make it stiffer. I will let you know what I find out. I am so glad you like it.

    • @1955dmb
      @1955dmb 3 года назад +2

      @@mimitodd8781 I love it!! Yes, the rope would be fine but I'm wanting to make sure the paint or dye doesn't bleed when wet. And yes I would love to see what you come up with to make the bowls a bit harder. I do believe tighter zig zags help. But I hadn't thought of a varnish. Hope you find something.

      I would only spot clean if needed. Soaking it in water may make the bowl weak. My experience with acrylic paint is that it doesn’t wash out. I have plenty of clothes stained with paint to prove it doesn’t come out?🤣 Hope this helps! Let me know how your project turns out and welcome to my channel friend!

    Is your water hot? I wanna do this, but not sure what temperature my water should be

      I use cold water. It’s pretty easy. If you want a darker shade just add more paint.

    I have trouble picking color so I am asking if you can tell us the paint color number you used.

      Well I’ve made many of those bowls and used up all the blue paint. I stated the base with a dark blue and then moved up to the next lighter shade of blue. When you go to purchase the paints they are usually stocked in colors so just move up the colors from dark to light and then take your 4 colors over to the thread section and match the paints. Hope this helps! I plan to make a spring basket next month with directions so stay tuned for that tutorial!

    Can these be washed that use the paint? What brand of acrylic paint are you using?

      You could spot wipe these but I would not dip in dishwater. It could weaken the walls of the bowl. I use acrylic paints that you buy in bottles from Walmart. If you’ve ever gotten acrylic paint on your clothes it is really hard to get out. Hope this helps! Thanks!🙂

    What color thread did you use ? Did you change thread per change of color

    • @mimitodd8781
      @mimitodd8781  2 года назад

      I matched the thread with the paints. As the colors changed I changed the thread.

    Did you use the same color thread for the entire bowl or change it as the rope color changed?

    • @mimitodd8781
      @mimitodd8781  2 года назад +1

      I used different color threads as the rope color changed. When I bought the paints I matched them with a spool of thread.

    Is this process washable?

    • @mimitodd8781

      The clothesline rope is made for outside use so I guess it could be washed after it is made into a bowl. However the shape of the bowl may be altered if it gets wet.

    I am looking to make a bowl for a gift & put a few items in it. Is there a formula to how much rope to use per the size of the bowl?

    • @mimitodd8781
      @mimitodd8781  7 месяцев назад +1

      I measured my latest bowl which was made using 100 feet of rope. The base of the bowl is 5 inches across. The height of the bowl is 7 inches and is 11 wide across the top. This is a nice size and would hold several items.
      The bigger you make your base the shorter the height of your bowl will be. The smaller your base the taller the bowl will stand.
      If you want to see how much a bowl this size will hold check out this video: ruclips.net/video/okXd1SPOYlQ/видео.htmlsi=hFQg0DRuUmEITECz
      Hope this helps! Thank you!

      What type of Acrylic paint did you use? How much water & paint for I tried it tonight and the rope just did not seem to take to the rope. I ended up putting it on by hand when the rope was wet. Is there a certain water temperature and how long to soak. in the water?

    • @mimitodd8781
      @mimitodd8781  7 месяцев назад

      @user-yc3mu9kx3l I use the folk art brand from Walmart. I usually use 1/2 of a small bottle with about 4 cups of water. Use more paint if you want a deeper color. Use less paint if you want an ombré look. Most importantly use 100% cotton rope for dyeing. The poly cotton does not take the color well. I used cool tap water.

      @user-yc3mu9kx3l I use cool tap water and soak the rope 30 minutes to an hour.

      The acrylic paints really don’t run after the drying step. I’ve never had an issue with that. Hope this helps.
