    Thank you so much for this video! It really visualizes why the linear t5/t8 bulbs are so important and just how much of a difference the screen and height makes! My leopard gecko has the arcadia 7%, though admittedly more recently I've learned that there was a study showing that leos with uvb vs proper d3 supplementation were about the same in the amount of d3 they had internally.
    I hope this shows people though just how important the initial set up is. It does have me thinking though, what about a video showing the importance of thermostats or dimmer switches and just how drastically the temperatures for a basking/hotspot can vary? Because I feel like this is so often skipped and can potentially be so dangerous for reptiles when the temperatures aren't being carefully controlled and monitored!

    Dude I bought one of those meters thinking I was gonna need a stronger light for my crested gecko, especially since I had a black mesh top, hell no. Even with the black mesh the light had to be like 6 to 7 inches away for it to be at the .5 to .7 on the Ferguson scale. Best 250 I ever spent so far. This way I'll also be able to measure when I will need to adjust height due to degradation. Thanks for the info.

    You can get wider UVB distribution with a compact fluorescent based on the size of the dome. I don't know if the Reptisun compacts are really A "coil" bulb as much as a compact fluorescent light. An exo Terra 26 watt 10.0 desert for example is more of a coil and has a higher output. A 5.5, 8, or 10 inch deep dome can be used to control the distribution a little bit better or even using aluminum foil. I use mercury vapor bulbs, CFLs, and T5s depending on the application. Exo Terra CFLs are much better than the Reptisun ones based on output and distribution in my experience. Reptisun 13 watters are garbage. The most important factors are distribution and intensity. The Arcadia 12% T5s are 6500k and the 14% 7500k so those are pretty good at replicating natural light in certain aspects especially when paired with a halogen and jungle dawn. Regardless of the bulb type you want the UVB and halogen/heat lamp to overlap.

  • @chroniclesofab6206
    @chroniclesofab6206 Год назад

    excellent video, though i wonder if you used a bulb with a more intense UV output perhaps there would be more UV that can penetrate through the glass? I mean if you are driving for long distances under the summer heat you will notice your arms and maybe parts of your face will become more tanned, would this not constitute as UV penetrating through glass?

    So I had another question lol I just got my first bearded dragon and I watched all your videos on them. I have a basking bulb attached to a thermostat so it doesn't get to hot in his basking area. I noticed when the thermostat reaches its set temp it shuts the light off. Is there another way I can monitor the temp of the basking area with out having the bulb shut on and off.

    I have a solarmeter 6.2 and it reads differently. Right by the light it reads in the 300s and it drops to the 20s towards the bottom of the enclosure. What’s the range for beardies on that type of solarmeter reading??? ❤

  • @jonathanlim3614

    Hello so I have a baby bearded dragon and I got her in August and she hasn’t been going to the bathroom in 2 days, I’ve gave water and I’ve been feeding her normally but I’m getting worried so if you can tell me son that can help. And I asked you first so I don’t have to call the store right away.

    • @SetariM
      @SetariM Год назад +2

      If a beardie isn't pooping and you've been feeding it the required amount of food, it needs more water. Try hornworms, they're basically all water on the inside and can help with constipation. Also try a warm bath after a few hours after that as well. Make sure its basking spot is between 90 degrees to 110 degrees F and it's getting enough heat, since their digestive system works on heat. If it's not cleared up in a day or so after feeding the hornworm (or two depending on size), the warm bath, the basking area temps are right, you need to take it to an exotic vet.

    • @chihuahuasandgeckos
      @chihuahuasandgeckos Год назад +2

      It may be due to stress. As the other fellow person said, check basking temps and humidity. I got a beardie in early November. My beardie would not go to the bathroom for a few days at a time because he was very stressed. If they have stress marks showing, then it’s a good indication that what you’re dealing with is stress. I still recommend giving a bath just to help things move along. 👍

    That's not even one of the good Solarmeter products (let alone a precise radiometer). It's literally barely more precise than the best UV test cards. Get a radiometer that measures either UVA or UVB in µw/cm², and use it alongside a test card that has a labeled color gradient for µw/cm² as well as a UVC test area (e.g., the Eideal brand is probably the best one on Amazon, but there are other great ones widely available).
    And yes I know you could alternatively use the sensitive UVB radiometer alongside a sensitive UVA radiometer, but you'd still need something to measure any amount of UVC output anyway, so you'd still need either a test card or a sensitive UVC radiometer. At that point, you may as well just save up for a UV/Vis photospectrometer, which is infinitely more precise than any commercially available radiometer.
    BTW, it's worth mentioning that other brands of UV radiometers have existed before the Solarmeter product line, and even VivTech's came out before this video. The Solar Light company has a monopoly on ignorant herpetoculturists.
