Mel Lewis told the story about Elvin Jones giving a drum clinic. A student asked Elvin, “How do you tune your drums?” Elvin replied, “How do I tune them?!” The student replied, “Yes.” So Elvin took out a drum key and proceeded to detune all the drums much lower. Elvin then said, “That’s how I tune them, but my Japanese wife like them high like Japanese drums, so usually I play them high pitched.”
I bought these sizes in the early 70's. Brand new Gretsch. Sold them in the 80's. BIG MISTAKE...
beautiful
Great sounding drums, and you play them very well.
@@chuckc7375 thanks a lot!
The sound of these….. great playing also. Cymbals are remarkable.
Hello and thanks for the great drumming and for letting us all hear the wonderful Gretsch Broadkaster kit. Beautiful sound. Very Nicely Done.
Congratulations on this kit and your skills
Great video mate! Kit sounds awesome
I love the way this kit sounds! Like all the old records! Can you talk about how you tuned the bass drum? Dig your playing, my friend.
Love this little kit!
very nice sound and playing
Love that kit…super slick
Beautiful sounding drums and playing!
Beautiful playing
Nice sound man 👍
That is some tasty playing...
🙌
Sounds wonderful!
Interesting. You have your toms tuned a fifth apart, I usually tune fourths but have to try this separation. Nice playing.
SMOOTH 💘
Fluid👍
Nice sound and skills man! Sounds awesome! How did you tune the resos:)?
And the snare in relation to the toms? Whats your tuning philo?
The resos of the toms are tuned to the same note as the batter heads. Sometimes I also tune the resos slightly higher to get more attack.
The snare is usually tuned a whole note higher than the high tom. The reso of the snare is tuned a whole tone lower than the better head to get more resonance out of the drum and the snare wires.
Great sounding kit !!! would you like to share the fundamental notes of each drum?
Beautiful kit and excellent drummer too!
I would like to know if you use the internal muffler?
I would like to see a video without the internal muffler. Lol
Or would there be too many overtones without the internal silencers for the 12 and 14 toms? like "bannGggg Bouannnnggg" lol
It's without the dampening system already. Due to the high tuning the sustain drops a bit.
@clotzo
Thank you for your answer, I understand now and indeed when the tuning is very high the sound and sustain is much more controlled but so pleasant.
As I do not have the budget I would settle for The Yamaha Stage custom birch Bop kit with a good snare and good Zildjian or Istanbul cymbals haha.
@@metothemoon1227 When you put nice heads on and tune them properly, every set can sound amazing. The Stage Custom with good cymbals will definitely do a great job :)
I don't like the way it's overly tuned high. You lose all the bottom end. Every shell gravitates to a 'sweet spot'. And This is past that point. It's too choked.
@Tony Fernandez Obviously, you know next to nothing about jazz, drumming or jazz drumming for that matter. It's part of the idiom to tune the drums high. They sound great and certainly not 'choked'. This grooves like hell. Sorry you can't hear it.
@@Simon-iy7mt why do people like you assume that I know nothing about jazz? I know more than before you were born. Vinnie Colauita, Steve Gadd, Dave Weckl, etc. I like their sound. And you're telling me they know nothing about jazz? Your reply was nothing more than the pleasure of flexing your ego, and insulting people that are entitled to an opinion. The drums ARE CHOKED!
@@Simon-iy7mt By the way Simon, have some respect for spelling people's names correctly. And I couldn't give a rat's ass about idioms. I'm talking about drum tuning. And how to maximize resonance. In fact, you're the one who knows crap. What is jazz? The skies are the limit. I like the way Steve Holmes tunes his Yamaha Phoenix kit when he swings. So what? You shouldn't play jazz if you're so constipated and stuck in one way of tuning drums. The sky's the limit. That is jazz.
Tony Fernandez…
You have your opinion on the sound …I like the sound
Doesn’t really matter that much does it
No wrong or right mate
i have to disagree, i think the sound of that kit is where it should be, and do not sound choked to me
