Hi George, If painting large format I use #10 and #12 flat, round and filbert brushes. I usually fill in the background and sky in with a 2.5 inch flat bristle brush. I hope that helps!
No you do not need to invest to get an airbrush. You can use a paint brush are apply just a little paint and dry brush it on. I find that the airbrush works better for me and I do not need to take a lot of time doing it.
