- James Heyn shares his experiences as a soldier in the Vietnam War.
Special thanks to Mr. James Heyn for sharing his personal history with us, and to Dr. James Smither for conducting this interview.
The GVSU Veterans History Project was established in 2006 to collect, record and archive oral history interviews and other materials relating to the experiences of military veterans of all eras, as well as of civilians and foreign nationals with stories relating to the American experience in wartime. We work in partnership with the Library of Congress Veterans History Project, and are one of a small number of archiving partners across the country. As an archiving partner, we post our interview videos and other materials on a website that is part of the Special Collections of the GVSU Library.
In addition to conducting and archiving oral history interviews, the Project also produces documentary films and public access cable television programs, develops book projects and gives, live presentations around West Michigan and across the country. Dr. James Smither of the GVSU History Department serves as Project Director, and Prof. Frank Boring of the GVSU School of Communications is our resident filmmaker.

Mr. Heyn, it is beautiful that you remember your mother's prayer and credit her with your safe return. Thank you for serving, Sir.
God Bless. We need more men like James!
Welcome home brother, you served with honor...72 yo Navy Veteran, never in country, thank God
Thank You for your service sir!
Men like James are always fantastically interwsting to listen to, just these massive experiencesthat these young men went through. The honesty that comes out, the difficulty in sometimes finding the right words to describe what they went through charachtarise how difficult that time in their life must have been. Respect from a Scotsman James. 🙏🏻
Thank you for your service
Enjoyed hearing your experience. I am 77 year old guy that did not go. My brother was there 3rd Marines. Dang I respect you guys.
Interesting. I went in 66. Went thru Fort Wayne to Basic at Fort Knox and then to Fort Dix for AIT. Flew to San Francisco and then flew out from Oakland Presido to Saigon. Spent 2 tours in Nam at CuChi and came back to Ford Ord and then out.
What if the politicians started a war, and no one showed up?
Its ok cos women would mobalise to make sure we go
You mean conflict ww2 was the last war
This guy always brings up raise I’m every interview
You mean race .right?
I've read the comments; and some say negative, most are thankful. Why does one exclude a personal expirence, when most likely the commenter was never there? (For instance, he mixed up the Beatle that was at Haight in SF, it was Harrison and not Lennon, but, a Beatle there is the point)
You wanna meet a real hero? Hop aboard my %%%%. I’m a combat veteran and a war hero. My story is much more sad then his
Interesting the differences between the responses on the racial climate in the South.
มอบความเป็นธรรมให้พวกเขาเพื่อยุติการแก้แค้นที่ไม่รู้จักจบฉันจะลงมือปฏิบัติการ
Got most of his training on bases in the United States & could've seen some enemies in Vietnam.
benjamin เพื่อนโดนัลด์ทรัมป์เขาก็ไม่เอา
I am not convinced. As a vietnam war orphan, I have studied historical vietnam war facts. His glass Isn't full.
To those who dare to question and state you are a liar
What are your qualifications?
Shame on u
What have u done ?
I too think this guy is full of it
Questionable at best. Truck driver who read about combat after he got home. BS.
This man is a liar people! Dissect and listen carefully.
How can you say he is a liar. I was a grunt in Vietnam 1971. What is says rings true to me.
@EMO EMO Jones reply is to the 1st guy not you!!
ถ้าให้ศัตรูของแกเป็นคนลงมือทำมันจะไม่จบฉันเป็นศาลขอตัดสินผิดก็ต้องชดใช้
