This is a great video, let me add some clarification to why 007 was able to unlock your GameShark.
    TLDR;
The short answer is "GameShark Key-Codes".
Easy fix that works sometimes is to insert Mario (or whatever you think should work), and hold down the Gameshark button while powering on the N64. This may clear out the keycode.
    Longer Explanation:
Because some games implemented anti-piracy, or anti-cheat into their games, the GameShark devised a way to circumvent these measures. Diddy Kong Racing for example, will not boot with a Gameshark. Unless you first put in a compatible game, then from the Gameshark menu select the "Diddy Kong Racing" key-code. Power off the system and put in Diddy Kong, then you are "off to the races" ;). If instead you enabled the Diddy key-code, and inserted Mario 64 or another incompatible game, you would get the infamous '8' and the GameShark won't be happy until the memory is cleared or you boot Diddy Kong Racing.

Goldeneye is a standard 6102 “Mario boot” cartridge. It literally would’ve booted with any 3rd party game, early 1st/2nd party games, and late 1st party games. The issue with that one was that he was trying to boot titles with alternate CICs without first booting to a standard game and selecting that option. That particular GameShark was in perfect working order and wasn’t even expecting an alternate CIC security chip.

  • @emmettturner9452
    @emmettturner9452 2 года назад +9

2:40 “I could definitely be wrong though”
    Yep. :) I’ll explain:
They were working perfectly. N64 software has to have a matching boot type between the software header and the security boot chip (CIC). The GameShark needs to reconfigure its own header to boot with games that use an alternate boot chip. The GameShark calls the different boot types “Key Codes” or “Keycodes.”
The normal operation is that you need to boot with a game that uses standard CIC 6102/7101 “Mario Boot” then select the alternate boot type “key codes” or “key code” as the GameShark calls them. The next time you turn it on it will require a cartridge with that boot type inserted so you don’t want to pick an alternate boot type if you aren’t booting one of those games next. Since you need to be able to boot to change it back there is obviously potential for getting stuck if you don’t have a game on hand matching the alternate boot type previously selected.
There were only 5 boot types in each region. One is standard and one doesn’t matter so you only need a selection of 3 alternative boot type game titles for any GameShark that isn’t working with the standard boot type. By the way, you wouldn’t want to test Donkey Kong 64 first after cleaning like the video shows because it uses an alternate boot type (specifically, CIC 6105 “Zelda Boot”). ;)
6102/7101 “Mario Boot” is very much the standard boot type. Hundreds of games use it including all 3rd party games, launch titles, early 1st/2nd party games, and late 1st party games.
6101 is for Star Fox 64 exclusively.
7102 is for Lylat Wars (PAL Star Fox 64).
6103/7103 is “Diddy Boot” or “1080 Boot” used in more than a dozen Nintendo/Rareware titles.
6105/7105 is “Zelda Boot” used for nearly a dozen games like Ocarina of Time, Majora’s Mask, and late Rareware titles.
6106/7106 is “Yoshi Boot” and is only used in Yoshi’s Story, Cruis’n World, and F-Zero X.
The standard header is for CIC 6102/7101 “Mario Boot.” The 610x-series is for NTSC consoles and the 710x-series is for PAL consoles. They will generally boot each other’s games but there will be video issues.
Even small NTSC game collections for N64 typically have 6102, 6103, and 6105 games but you may not have a 6101 or 6106 game handy. Thankfully, we can ignore 6101 since the GameShark doesn’t have a key code for that boot type and, thus, can’t get stuck waiting for it. I believe GameShark doesn’t need it because the game’s code has the same entry point as the standard 6102 Mario boot type.
6106 Yoshi Boot is the most likely to get someone truly stuck since a lot of people won’t have one of those few titles in their collection to get their GameShark booted if they accidentally pick that key code.
So, yeah, it isn’t corrupting itself. It’s doing what the user told it to do, though the potential for a user to poke around and get stuck was always very high. That is the risk for unlicensed accessories. ;)

Great info, Emmett! Purchased a used (obviously) GameShark at a small vg shop yesterday and was very disappointed by the no boot "8" which occurred with the only games I tried last night: Goldeneye, Wave Race, and Gauntlet Legends. When none of those worked, I just assumed the thing was broken as I had not yet done any research into the issue. After reading your post, I have hope. I have Diddy Kong Racing, Mario 64, and Cruisin World but have not tried those titles yet. Some questions for you if you have time: 1.) Will these carts (DKR, M64, CW) cover 3 out of the 5 potential NTSC lock-out scenarios you described? 2.) Do you know what boot options Goldeneye, Wave Race, and Gauntlet Legends cover? 3.) Do you know what other games will work for the 6105 Zelda boot option if I don't have a Zelda game?

    • @emmettturner9452
      @emmettturner9452 2 года назад +1

      @@DanielLynds Thanks!
1.) Yes. Super Mario 64 is 6102 which you already tried with Goldeneye 007. Diddy Kong Racing is 6103 “Diddy Boot” and Cruis’n’ World is 6106 “Yoshi Boot” giving us at least two more options to try.
2.) Goldeneye 007, Waverace, and Gauntlet Legends are all standard 6102 “Mario Boot” so it will boot with one of those after it returns to the normal state. It can’t do that until it successfully boots with whatever alternate boot type it is stuck looking for now.
3.) Other than the Zelda games the other 6105 games are all late Rareware titles. We already mentioned Donkey Kong 64 so I presume you don’t have that either. The rest are:
      Banjo-Tooie
      Conker’s Bad Fur Day
      Perfect Dark
      Mickey's Speedway USA
      Jet Force Gemini
I would suggest trying the other two boot types we know you have and if that doesn’t work find/try Starfox 64 (6101) and any 6105 “Zelda Boot” game. :)
The boot type also specifies a code entry point for the software so it can’t run the code it needs to reset itself to the standard boot type until you find the right boot cart and try it once. I hope this helps!

@@DanielLynds If that reply seemed suspiciously fast, it’s because I wrote a spreadsheet chart on my phone for operating my Bung Dr. V64 and Dr. V64jr512. :)
I actually saw a Japanese Mickey’s Speedway USA at the flea market yesterday for $10, which would’ve worked perfectly since the GameShark even fits Japanese games. Jet Force Gemini is common for around $10-15 last I checked. Of course, you may have been on the fence about buying one of the more expensive titles and this was the nudge you needed to justify it. Time to buy Zelda? ;)

Thanks for this info. This is most helpful to many of our problems because I think a lot of us have the "8" issue. The big question is, after we find a game that works and boots the gameshark, what is the next step to making sure it is "properly configured" so that it will play other games? For example, I put in Diddy Kong Racing and got mine to boot. But then I tried Super Mario 64 after that and it is back to the "8". Thanks for your help.

Your GameShark was merely waiting for a game with a 6103/7103 boot type.
Donkey Kong 64 is 6105/7105 “Zelda boot.” Super Mario 64 and Goldeneye 007 are 6102/7101… which is the standard “Mario boot” that hundreds of games use (all 3rd party games are 6102/7101).

Hi. I’ve got a N64 GameShark Pro 3.3 that I bought new back when the console was current, and I only recently fired it up for nostalgia’s sake. The console and all my games work, but the GameShark works intermittently. At times, a game will work but not others (8 is displayed). I’ll play Goldeneye, for example, shut the system off for the night, and the next day it won’t work despite not having even removed the cartridge. Do you think my GameShark is corrupt? It’s in great shape for its age with no visible damage. There is, however, a boatload of what looks like soldering flux on the PCB. Just wondering what’s going on with it at this point. If you or anyone knows what may be going on, please let me know.

My Gameshark came a VHS called "how to hack like a pro."
    ruclips.net/video/la3VOxeBksE/видео.html
The first couple of minutes explain using Key Codes. Which are required to play certain games.
The VHS calls a game like Golden Eye your a set up cartridge because its a game that does not need a keycode. You load up the menu choose a key code then power off and enter your new game. They even tell you that putting any game in the Gameshark other than the one you selected the code for will cause the gameshark to not work.
My guess is that some of the issues we are having has to do with this one fact. Which is why occasionally using games like Zelda, Mario, and Banjo help it work. I think If you happen to have the games mentioned in the first 3 minutes of this video you should try them all.

    • @emmettturner9452

Yep. Mario boot is the standard used by hundreds of games including all 3rd party titles, early 2nd party titles, and early/late 1st party titles.
Then comes Starfox 64, which is the only game with that boot type.
Then comes Diddy boot for dozens of 1st/2nd part games (Smash, Banjo, 1080, DKR, etc).
Next up, Zelda boot for Ocarina, Majora, and a bunch of late Rareware titles.
Yoshi boot is tricky since you might not have one of the three games handy: Yoshi’s Story, F-Zero X, or Cruis’n World.

@@AceNelsonGaming 1. Start the console up with the game that works for you.
      2. Enter into the “Key Codes” tab on the menu or press L+R buttons simultaneously to enter “Key Codes” menu if your Gameshark version doesn’t have it on the main menu already.
      3. Search through the different categories until you see one key code that has the game’s name(if you don’t find a key code with the name of your game, google the games name +”Gameshark key code” it should come up, do some digging if you have to).
      4. Once you find the correct key code or have inputted your code for that game, Press A on it and it should ask “Do you have this game?”. Select “Yes” and Press A. It will tell you to power off and change to that that game.
      5. Be sure to only remove the game cartridge that worked for you to get it started and leave the Gameshark still inserted in the console.
      6. Insert the game you want to use the cheats on onto the Gameshark. Power the console on and it should load up and let you select your cheats and start up your game.
You have to do this process EVERY time you want to cheat on this cartridge because it is protected by Nintendo’s anti-piracy that has to be bypassed EVERY time.

Try a third party game first. They all use standard 6102/7101 “Mario” boot type.
Next, try a game with the second most common boot type. There are dozens of 6103 games to try, like Diddy Kong Racing, Super Smash Bros, 1080 Snowboarding, etc.
6105 is the other popular alternate boot type used in both Zelda games and a bunch of late Rareware titles (Perfect Dark, Conker, Jet Force Gemini, Banjo-Tooie, etc), so try that.
If it’s still not booting then someone likely configured it to boot Yoshi or Starfox boot types. Starfox is the only 6101 game so if they picked that you have to use Starfox 64 to boot. If they picked Yoshi then you have to use Yoshi’s Story, F-Zero X, or Cruis’n World to boot.
It may be hard to believe but this is how they were designed to work. Most GameSharks are not broken, they are just configured to boot with one game boot type or another and you can’t reconfigure it until you get booted with the right game.
