My favorite part of the video was 8:00 - end. It is so real, so raw... the transition, the move, and the feelings..
I've been thinking about moving to Texas too because my company has another office out there but I have the same questions -- how do I meet friends and people and how do join a community. I would just be doing it alone too...
I want to start fresh but I'm afraid of leaving my past and my friends behind but the cost of living is so much cheaper and I'm sure there's a lot of opportunities as well.
Of course, everything takes adaptation and time will solve everything or you'll figure it out.
thanks for inviting us to your journey though!!

Texas is generally a very welcoming place! If you move to a large city like Dallas, you'll have no problem finding ppl. There are tons of free events for all interests and living costs vary depending on what part of town you're looking.

Yeah I really felt it in the end. I recently moved across the country for a new job. Financially it made sense because I'm making way more and I had savings so I didn't have to spend too much of my new income for the actual move, but now that I'm here...boy is it rough. Where do you make friends when you're in your 30s? In the middle of a pandemic with social distancing measures? Aja's anxiety is 100% valid and I definitely urge anyone who is planning a big move at this time to REALLY consider the social implications. Yeah I'm making money but I spend everyday alone in my apartment not knowing anyone or where to go. It sucks. Hopefully whatever she decides will be the best (and happiest) thing for her. Good luck, Aja!

Trust in your bond with your friends. I have friends who travel all over and we are bonded for life. You should never have to think that you are missing out or leaving anything behind when you know you have a strong bond with family and friends, both my sister live 2hr away and i never feel like I’m missing out even with out busy schedule. Do it so you don’t regret it.

On the plus side Houston has Daiso and a huge Asian community. I’m sure you will make friends in no time. Also Houston is a major airport so it will be easy to travel everywhere. Sometimes you have to take risks and just do it. If anything it will be a new experience. Also I live in San Antonio and could introduce you to my friend in Houston. We are in our early mid 30s.

You will make new friends. You will get to know the area. You will start to develop attachment to the new place. 7 years ago when my job brought me to the new city, I did not know a single person. But the journey of me exploring the new city and branching out to make new friends is the most rewarding process. California is amazing but girl the cost of living tho. I swear later when you live in a nice neighborhood in a 5 bedroom house with a huge backyard you 'd be like why didnt I move here earlier?

The amount of extra real estate you get for the cost is really amazing. Others have said it here though, more house = more costs/bills/maintenance. Moving costs are also going to be crazy. Remember Aja, the walls don't build a home. Home is where you feel comfortable and home is where you can be yourself. Brian may be from Houston, but even from this vid, he projects that he's made a home in LA. If you both feel LA is home, stay in LA.
Your dreams of a house will come. And your guys' careers continuously keep evolving. Stay motivated and work hard to buy a house, but don't compromise what you know as home :(

If you guys wana stay in LA why not move to the Valley?? Around Woodland Hills, Canoga park, Northridge , Chatsworth etc or even out to Ventura County .
You can rent newly built townhouses for under or around $3000, (I live in a 3 floor ,2bedroom 2 1/2 bath townhouse 7 mins from calabasas for $2200) you get a lot more space for your money in the valley than in downtown LA. These areas are only about an 45mins- an hour drive to downtown LA.
Also it's normal to be afraid of change, that's the human in us but don't allow your fear to block your blessings. You never know what could be if you take the leap. I'm looking forward to seeing your journey, all the best🤗

Oh man, I feel this. My husband and I made a somewhat similar decision 2 years ago. We moved from San Francisco to Austin. Unlike you, all of our family lives in CA - so we had to weigh being near family vs moving to a better lifestyle.
So far, we are 100% glad we moved to TX. It's shockingly more affordable. We were able to buy our first house and are enjoying making it a home. We also had an easy time making new friends here. It seems like Texans prioritize relationships - friends and family - whereas our SF friends were very focused on their careers. Nothing wrong with that, but we end up socializing a lot more here in TX. It's a nice change.
As far as finances go - our lives have completely changed for the better. We come out way ahead here in TX. With all the savings, we're able to travel back home frequently to see our loved ones. And plus, friends and family enjoy coming to visit us.

I've lived in Houston all my life! I actually stay in River Oaks/Washington area, and I love it. I have a son who's 4 and we will be moving in the next 6 months ( so we think ) to build a home out in suburbia (where...we don't know yet). I just found your channel today & I just wanted to send you both good vibes. I totally agree on focusing on "your next chapter" and doing what you need to do to get there. My husband and I love the area we are in now. We can walk to everything. It's perfect for young professionals, however, I want my son to have a backyard and a great education. That's what's important to me right now. So we gotta do what we gotta do (and we can't afford a house in the city and private school. We ain't got it like that....YET!) Anyways, I'm rambling...but I know y'all will make the right decision!

If you want to move, Katy is a good option. My wife and I bought our first home after we graduated and started working near Washington Avenue/Memorial Park (right behind Benjy's or The Classic after the rebranded and Blue Fish). It was great since it's near fast to commute to downtown (where we work), between Memorial and Buffalo Bayou parks, the freeways, Galleria, the Heights, and a quick drive to Chinatown. It was great with only one kid, but with twins on the way at the time, it was going to be crowded and inconvenient for my wife and kids to walk up and down a 4 story town home every day. We were deciding between either moving to the Memorial, Spring Branch, Energy Corridor and Sugar Land area and eventually decided on a new build in Katy (the floor plan was similar to the Ashton Woods' model home and it was still much cheaper than older homes in the areas we were looking at). The school districts in Katy are great for kids if you plan on enrolling yours in public school, i10 will lead you into the city without having to pay toll tag, it's mostly developed now as opposed to how barren it was a little over a decade ago, it's still constantly expanding (especially Katy Chinatown area), and the park and ride at i10 and 99 is very convenient. You get so much bang for your buck compared to the city. We sold our home on Knox street back in 2019 and it was 4 stories, largely basic inside, had a tiny yard in the front, you could touch the neighbors' house from your house since they are that close together, and felt pretty cramped even though it really wasn't. Our new home is a new build and cost even less than our old home with so many things we didn't have before (specifically a backyard, a pool, and a drive way). If you're fine with older homes most of them are below $300k and they're still nicer and cheaper than what you would find in Sugarland, Spring Branch, and the suburbs heading down 45 south. There are plenty of newer homes being built or are a few years old if you're willing to drive slightly further east of Katy in Fulshear as well. As for the demographic, we have so many people from California moving to the area. It's probably one of the reasons Katy's Chinatown and Katy's (as well as the surrounding areas) Asian population is growing so rapidly. I'm half Asian and it's nice to see many people I could relate to here as oppose to many other suburbs.

And awww Aja, I think you could make friends anywhere! But if moving to Houston will make you give up too much personally and professionally, follow your gut.

I moved from CA to TX for grad school and it’s definitely tempting to go bigger than you need cause it feels “cheap”, though the cost of AC in all those rooms during the summer adds up fast! It does sound like they want more space (talked about having a dance room and they could use the 3rd or 4th bedroom an office/guest bedroom) and it could be an incentive to move to Houston (get something cheaper and bigger than they could in LA).

Moving to a big city like Houston is going to be such an easier transition! The larger cities in TX are diverse so you get a good range of different political views, religions, etc. So, it's easier to find ppl you clique with! Also, the food is really varied and amazing. Events are easy to find via Facebook, and ppl are generally open and welcoming. I might be biased, but I think you will have an easier time finding more grounded ppl like yourself here than in LA.

Aja I know you will make the right decision and even if it doesn’t work out I know you are resilient enough to move wherever your will thrive and be happy.
With that said, I must admit that every time you mention moving to Houston you seem to not want to move there (at times it’s like your forcing yourself into the move) or like the though of it depresses or doesn’t set well with you. Meanwhile your boyfriend seems to be the primary one that wants to move there. Have you both thought of other places that you would mutually be excited to move to? I know moving is a big decision and it can strengthen a relationship or create division/resentment especially if there are underline issues that haven’t been resolved in the relationship...
You seem to be a lovely strong women so I know you will make friends no matter where you live (and yes it can be a little more challenging for adults or when one has been transplanted into a new area). I think having a healthy relationship with your boyfriend’s family can help since you will be moving where he has a preexisting support system. I know you will do well either way because the same skills and tools you developed and applied to get out of debt you can tap into no matter where you live.
Personally, I don’t cohabitate for many of the reasons listed above (and so many more). Yes the above can happened in a marriage but that commitment level seems to also create an underline understand to work together on doing life together (which for me isn’t quite the same when dating situation). This isn’t a judgement on you or anyone else, it just seems like there are some things that I would want to complete before making big life decisions.
Finally, I travel to Texas annually and I thought Houston is a nice city to visit but I wouldn’t want to live there because of the weather, it is prone to flooding, and how the city/state has handled the pandemic. I like the Dallas-Forth Worth and Austin areas the most. All three homes where nice but I wouldn’t want to rent a home for the same or even higher amount than most reasonable mortgages in that area (that also includes L.A., New York, and the DMV area etc.).
    Be well and be safe!

Matchbox notice the 12 thumbs up. The lady asked how she was going to make friends here and it is family or clan vibes. People are so uptight and has a strong conservative core that the majority of locals stick to their own family or friends and transplants are always in flux. The transplants are friendlier/more social and outgoing (for a reason as Houston is a suburban sprawl with the highlight spots imitating California in aesthetic and pricing) and the native locals hate that as transplants are seen as a threat to their housing costs and job markets (which is also true as we do not mind a higher cost of living). Houston is a lot of things, but welcoming and full of deep connection opportunities for transplants it is not. A lot of people relocate and leave within 5 years or less if they are not from this region of Texas and Louisiana. It is a different mentality out here than California and Florida. Do not expect to find a group of people looking to casually hang out. It’s alot of suburbs, pre-existing cliques, career climbers, and the most annoying question of what do you do for a living.

I moved to Houston from New Jersey and have been living here for about 9 years. Houston is honestly the best place to live imo with everything so accessible (food, parks, museums, beach in Galveston even though it’s gross water, Chinatown, bars, medical center) and plus, many of the suburbs around Houston have really good school systems like Katy and Fort Bend for the intentions of starting a family. 🙂
Whenever I commute to school, I take this one particular road and know very well where one of those apartments are and I finally get to see what it’s like inside this video!! Glad to see you guys back in Houston! I always loving bringing my family and friends down here. It’s honestly the best place to live, except the traffic!! 😝

I left CA too and I’m in my 30s. There was a def a transition period. But you can find friend doing local meetups or meet people at coffee shops or the gym/yoga studio. You’ll def get more bang for your buck in Texas. Good luck w your decision 🤍

Cecilla Khorn yeah I just looked up local meet ups on fb. So for me since I’m vegan I looked up vegan groups and met people that way. I also made friends w people I work with and at the yoga studio :) good luck on your move. I cried a lot in the beginning but that’s bc I moved from CA to the east coast and I left my family lol but you’ll get through it. Just have fun and my number one tip is try not to compare CA to where you move. It doesn’t help just made me miss CA more lol

Seems like the biggest reason you want to move is to save money. Maybe I missed it, but I didn't pick up on any other real reasons. I heard "starting a new chapter," moving into a "new life," "one step closer to an actual home," saving is important today due to "the uncertainty in the world" but those are vague and don't exist in reality.
Like you said, it's not like you NEED to move to pay the rent, so optimizing life around financial decisions at this point is not going to increase happiness/satisfaction/fulfillment. You're probably having these discussions off camera, but dig deep to find the real reason for the desire to move. I'll bet it's not to save money.
When your lease ends, doesn't it switch to month-to-month?

It's more affordable than moving west towards "the valley" (Northridge ect). Cities in SGV like west covina, arcadia, diamond bar, Claremont are way more affordable than directly in downtown and its usually a 35min drive to downtown...best of luck on your search

Been living in LA for 5 years. The bf is born and raised in LA. His great grandparents settled here and the family has been here ever since. We wanted to continue with “tradition” and continue to make LA our home, but in thinking about our future and potential children, we have been considering TX as well.
We had two scary incidents in the past year, theft of $7k worth of property from our garage and waking up to a drugged out man in our backyard.
We are getting sick of the homeless and crime here.
Another point to think about, no income tax and low gas prices!
Our plan would be to fly out to LA a couple of times a year for a long weekend getaway. Ticket prices are very affordable between TX and LAX.
Good luck! And also keep in mind you can always move back! You are not stuck with the decision for life, especially if you are renting in Houston.

I plan to move to Houston in the next two years to be with my boyfriend and I completely understand your fears and struggles. Me and my boyfriend made the decision to move out there (even though we would prefer CA) because of living cost and what we want to do in terms of family, traveling and the lifestyle we want to live. The dollar goes a lot further in TX than in CA because lifestyle is much slower over there than in LA, but I can see Houston growing and becoming like LA in the next few years - so it could be a good investment in the long run.
Stay positive and really focus on what is best for you both and for your future family because that will come first :)

This was such a sweet insight into moving struggles. My partner and I moved from East Coast to West Coast of Australia. He was moving for work and had friends already. I had 0 friends in the same city. I guess with COVID, video calling, social distancing/gathering limitations, most of my friends back home at the time were not able to see each other either. Pre-COVID and now when restrictions have eased, my partner's friends introduced us to their friends who introduced us to their friends. Making friends will eventually happen, I did try Bumble BFF but didn't vibe with some of them. After 10 months of not being able to go back home (our state has banned interstate travel), I'm very happy to have made the move because exploring a new city is really enriching.
And to have that opportunity doesn't come very often (at least for us). We plan on moving back home after a couple of years so that's always an option too :)

making friends as an adult is a lot harder than as a kid however it's not imposable. I have struggled with this for a while as an adult. I still live in texas but a lot of my friends at this point have moved to other states. I ended up finding myself alone wanting to hang out and didn't know who to call or what to do. I ended up finding a bar or coffee shop and just have a drink. Id tell myself after one drink I can leave if I want too but no to-go cups. The took the pressure off. And from there treat it like dating. Walk up to someone and say "Hi my name is..." and out of habit people respond and that starts a conversation.
Also, you are in the south let the southern hospitality and politiness work FOR you!

    Hi Aja,
I was in the same exact situation as you. My bf and I moved from CA to Dallas, TX about a year and a half ago! The both of us are originally from San Diego. He got a job offer he couldn't turn down and asked me to come along. We've been together for 5 years so this was a HUGE step for us, I feel your pain 100%. Leaving all our family and friends behind and moving to a new place was tough, neither of us had any family or friends out here. Meeting people was a little hard because you have to make the effort to go out and socialize~ (Me being an introvert and homebody lol) but when the two of you settle, go out and explore! The farmers market is a good start! People are super friendly out here, it's that southern hospitality :) They will recommend bars and restaurants! From there you'll start to get the vibe of the city. If you're comfortable, there's also apps like Bumble Friends you can use. You'll realize that you're not the only one new to the city! Moving out of your comfort zone and transitioning is HARD, not going to lie. We were homesick for a bit BUT we both knew it was for the better. I, myself and my bf were able to grow as individuals and together as a couple. It was the best decision we've ever made! We recently got our first fur baby and are currently looking for a townhome too as our little family continues to grow

I just want to say based from my experience that eventually you will be fine and it will give you so much peace of mind having your own place. If you two decide to stay in LA that’s awesome too because you’re familiar with everything/everybody and work I guess is better for you. BUT if you two decide to move to a different state, own a place, and plan for a family? It’ll be the best decision moving forward.

Do things on your terms and because you want to do them or because they are genuinely the best thing for you, not because it's what you "should" do. I purchased a home in Houston and been here for about a year now from Boston. Let me tell you, I miss Boston every single day. The charm, Charles River, being close to the beach/water, all the restaurants, knowing some of the backroads, the people, knowing local business owners and supporting them, the connections, the driving, the vibe, no racism or at least I never encounter any as an Asian girl, and just what I'm used to... but sometimes you need to think about what do you need to do for the next chapter. I get a big yard and a decent house (not a mansion yet) in an up and coming neighborhood. If you want to continue to stay in LA, I can totally understand. For me, if I continue to stay where I'm comfortable, I won't be able to grow as a person. But hey, if you ever decide to move to Houston, I hope I get to bump into you some day and let you know my favorite restaurants prior to this pandemic! I didn't get the chance to explore Houston much so I still sorta hate it. lol. Traffic in downtown can be bad during rush hours so just depends on what you do for a living and your need and from my research, there are certain communities you shouldn't walk in/drive by. Oh, and if you ever decide to purchase a home in Houston on the long term, just know that property tax is up there.

So I live in the Heights. Its a great community that has great food options, great community, we have a Women's club, and a Association that really cares about the schools, our parks, streets. I ride my bike all of the time on the bike trails and to local restaurants. Im not going to say it is easy to make friends, but in this neighborhood there are lots of opportunities. Museum District is a bit of an older person neighborhood , but is one of the cultural centers of the city. EaDo is an up and coming neighborhood and is more diverse in income and backgrounds. It has had a surge of new restaurants, and businesses. It has been a slow transition, but it is how the Heights was 20 years ago.
Good luck in your decision making and as a native Houstonian, we would love to have you!
