- This is a more technically oriented video intended as a demonstration for alarm technicians that shows what kind of havoc VoIP lines can cause to DTMF based alarm reporting formats such as the most popular one used in the industry, Contact ID.

Great Video ! As a monitoring station technical manager, I have been recording and sharing audio clips of good and bad signal transmissions for years, to try to convince installers that they need to get their client’s alarms off of the phone lines, now that nearly all of them are affected by digitalisation in NZ.
I found this out 20 years ago. I build monitoring centers and I love the demonstration you gave. DTMF over VOIP doesn't work. Contact ID using capture via GSM is best for the older equipment now and they still sell it.
Wow, that is so counterintuitive! I would have thought for sure that DTMF would be the *most* reliable method over VoIP.
Good demo. That’s one of the biggest reasons why I no longer even offer phone lines as an option for monitoring.

They upgraded the phone line of my national weather service transmitter to a different phone line, but I only receive half of the alerts and the rest get decoded as Unrecognized or something. Wondering if VoIP is the issue... The old phone line was definitely more clearer, but this new one has less downtime than the old one.
Never knew you could try SIA instead, going to see if that works for giggles next time I install a radio for a panel going off pots to voip. I wish phone companies told customers that if they use POTS for alarm it very likely will stop working.. I feel like they know this happens! but many customers have told me they had no idea until they get a No Test text and I go out and discover VOIP.
Plus if the landline fails, the alarm can not communicate with the receiver if no alternative measures are on the system. Cellular with IP as a backup is the way to go.

Cellular communication is the way to go nowadays.
It generally works fine as long as the ATA is set to in-band DTMF, and you're running G.711. Asterisk loves to screw with in-band DTMF, but normal VOIP carriers won't touch it.
The problem now of days (especially in my area) old school copper landline service is just not a thing anymore. They just install VoIP now.
At my work (I work in IT), we have telemetering for electric and gas. Both that, and the fire alarm system run over Charter/Spectrum VoIP with no problems. Not exactly sure what protocol the fire alarm system uses. The telemetering devices I know are dial-up 56K. (yes in 2023!) The utility companies periodically call into them to grab a reading from the meters.
The key to VoIP is QoS and decent equipment.
I'm a Fire Alarm technician, your panel almost certainly uses ContactID for communicating, and these sorts of issues vary wildly. Out of the dozens of communicators I've commissioned, the unfortunate majority are using Spectrum VOIP lines, and it's entirely hit or miss. Sometimes it will work flawlessly for years without issue, sometimes you can't get the dialer to handshake the receiver even once. Sometimes you get both situations in the same day. The main take-home is there are several reasons why fire alarm communicators should not be using VOIP, this is only one of them.

Nope. Moved away from Pots and avoided Voip like the plague... went full cellular since day one and haven't looked back. Every system I've encountered using voip had issues... given my infrastructure here is horrible, out dated, and broken in many areas. Some places don't even have access to phone lines or internet for that matter.

Voip is extremely temperamental. Especially the Cisco and SCCP stuff.
VOIP equipment don't fuck with DTMF for absolutely no reason challenge (99% will fail)
It's especially frustrating with things like the Grandstream HT802 which don't properly implement in-band DTMF, instead of just passing it through they re-transmit it, which means their minimum DTMF duration still applies...

If DTMF doesn’t work, use FSK
If you are going to have a video comparing signals via Audio, DO NOT have background music playing! It was very distracting. The content was fine.
in hindsight it would have been better to completely mute the audio during that part
