    I once had a garage door opener in 1996 that came with the house. It had this cool red LED box mounted in the living room (which shared a wall with the garage) that would blink any time the garage door was open. It saved me a lot from leaving it open all night.
    I believe it was hardwired to the opener, but I never checked.

      That would certainly be a creative solution.

    Great job demonstrating the simplicity of set up and installation! Love how you set it up and tested on bench before installing. There are so many YT vids on “how to overcome set up problems” that I will throw caution to the wind and buy one.

    good video we bought the myq switch for the wall a few years ago and we setup an IFTTT procedure to close the garage door if is open at 11:00pm - pretty cool. works great!

      Why use IFTTT? The MyQ app does scheduling.

    Great video and explanation! ( awesome sleepy scene :) I have MyQ built into the opener along with the hub. Another cool feature is that if you have Apple CarPlay in your vehicle the door shows up on the screen and you can press that to open and close too.

    I have a Chamberlain door opener made in 1984. I have wondered if this would work. Knowing I have a retrofit remote attached and your great explanation of how the MyQ works, I am confident this will work for me. Thank you for an excellent explanation of the system.

    (from myQ support page). Note: For myQ accounts using a myQ Garage that requires a door sensor, the schedule-to-close feature is disabled. The myQ serial number on affected products will start with 0300 or 0400.

    4:39 your garage door already has the myQ garage opening features. That my q system is for people without it. The great thing is, that it is a universal garage opener.

      I think it was MyQ “ready” but needed a WiFi add on.

  • @jlluck

    I've had the older version for s few years now. I have two garages and luckily my main garage opener has My Q built in it so all I had to do was connect it to the hub. I use the smaller sensor on the other door since it doesn't support My Q. I noticed your opener has My Q but you still installed the hockey puck sensor - do you need to use that? Doesn't the hub work your opener since it has My Q built in it?
    Still a good, straight forward video. Very well done.

      @handydadtv  2 года назад +1

      The app had me install the door sensor before identifying my garage door opener. I guess it could be getting the door status from the opener instead of the sensor, but I have no way to verify that.

  • @richarddarrington6382
    @richarddarrington6382 Год назад +1

    If your actual garage door motor is MyQ ready then there is no need to install the extra hub. You can direct connect from your garage door motor to your home Wi-Fi. Save the 20 bucks you spent on sale. 🙂

      Mine was MyQ ready, not MyQ enabled. There was no way to connect it to WiFi.

      I don’t understand this; what does “myQ ready” even mean if it doesn’t have WiFi? What does it have that an older pre-WiFi opener doesn’t have?

    • @59phonebone
      @59phonebone 5 дней назад

      Oh…. I guess I could have googled this before I asked:
      ====
      “MyQ ready" is a term used to describe devices that have some MyQ circuitry built-in, but still require an additional component to work fully. This component could be a gateway, hub, or bridge.
      Chamberlain sold devices that were "MyQ ready" from 2011 to 2018.

      If you really want to go hi-tech, you might be able to use IFTTT to trigger the door to open automatically when you arrive home. I’ve never done that, but in theory it should work.

  • @bspaliwal
    @bspaliwal Год назад

    Actually I did that and got into the same open door problem because I opened it to take out trash after that final automation. I have now scheduled hourly automation so even if i leave the door open during the day, it is taken care of.

    I have this and it has issues. Sometimes it tells me the door is in the wrong status. So it would say that the door is open when it is closed. And because of how it works, when you press the "close button" it really opens the door. I now have a camera that look at the door so I can verify the status.

    • @handydadtv
      @handydadtv  2 года назад

      If it says open, but the camera shows that it’s really closed, how do you sync it with the “real” status?

    • @WayneMay
      @WayneMay 2 года назад

      @@handydadtv I go and press the old open/close button for the door opener. Somehow doing this triggers the door sensor to sync up. It can take 15 to 20 minutes to properly sync though. It's weird. But overall I am happy with this system.

  • @LanceClarke

    I bought one and I have an Android phone. The android app has fewer features than the apple version. The main difference is that the android app doesn't have the option to have it notify you that the garage is still open after 15 minutes. You only get a notification at the time the garage opens, and when it closes. 😕

    It’s a shame that the MyQ hub/app doesn’t have the timed auto-close feature that the wall-mounted remotes have. Very useful. Three, five or ten minutes open and it closes itself.

    • @handydadtv
      @handydadtv  2 года назад

      Are you sure it won’t do that? Could be a software issue. It has nothing to do with how the opener is mounted.

    • @g07u80
      @g07u80 2 года назад

      @@handydadtv , Yes It ONLY has timed close like close at 10:30 PM but no feature like If open for 10 minutes, close the garage (would love to see this feature in next version of software update). Also connecting to Alexa/Google home not available for home users I guess some sort of subscription is required. The only plus point I found was open/close remotely and amazon key delivery.

    But will this work on a detached garage? Live in Chicago. This would be fantastic. I have WiFi that reaches out there but it’s not the main WiFi for the house. It’s a google mesh system for my TV’s out there. Phones are normally connected to the main WiFi in the house. Would I still get notifications if phones are on the main WiFi and not the garage WiFi?
