I've investigated this quite a bit over the last few years. I've recently started meditating regularly and really deep-diving into Buddhist philosophy (I'd always had a passing interest in both of those things). Slowly I've come to realize how much unnecessary stress arises from wanting to "be" something else, or be perceived in some favorable way. I've lived in NYC for 10 years, and throughout that time I've gained a high-paying job, dated many women, gained a favorable reputation as a songwriter, and even as a baker. Yet, if I think about what has made me truly happy or content over the years, I can only recall the times when I've helped people by giving them someone to talk to. And lately I'm understanding more and more that as long as I have the very basics of survival (food, water, shelter) and the ability to help people, whether that is through physical labor or by simply being a calming presence, I have all that I need to be happy and content.

This makes me think of when the 9th century Buddhist monk Linji Yixuan told his disciples, “If you meet the Buddha on the road, kill him.” Beware of the self-proclaimed 'guru', because, do true teachers even call themselves 'gurus'?
