You're right on the partially repaired cars. Sometimes, when cars go to the shop and are being repaired from insurance, the shop sometimes finds additional damage while doing the repairs. If additional damage is found, they have to contact the insurance carrier and request a supplement of funds (additional money) or sometimes request an adjuster come out to address / inspect this additional damage. Often times, especially on large repairs or older cars, that additional amount can be the make/break on causing the car to be officially a total loss.

A lot of people buy cars from there and put some parts on the car and send it back to make profit just to hide major things. Or insurance companies sometimes decide to total out a car after it approved work being done due to not seeing all the damage sometimes that’s happened to me.

The damage on the mercedes isnt that bad. Its just cosmetic damage. The reason they totaled it is because the airbag deployed. My accident was way worse than that and they repaired it.
