Tying The Gartside Hopper with Kelly Galloup

- The Gartside Hopper, or Pheasant Hopper, was created by renowned fly tyer Jack Gartside while camping at Madison Junction in Yellowstone Park around 1970. In this video, Kelly will walk you through the steps of this slight variation and we will also be introducing our upcoming Fly Tying Contest.
This Contest will be going on over the next 3-5 weeks and will feature 3 categories. The first category is for a Terrestrial Pattern using only natural materials, so no foam or rubber/silicone is allowed. The winner of this category will receive a $250.00 gift certificate to the shop and be entered to win the grand prize, which will be either a Sage Payload or Maverick Fly Rod or a Renzetti Presentation Vise of your choice. Easily the best hopper pattern I have ever used. There are some places in Yellowstone ( that shall remain unnamed) where this fly will bring them up like no other fly I have ever tried. I like them in size 10. Thanks for the video.

I have some genuine hoppers tied by Jack that are similar to yours but have a head that is maybe half the size of your version. Both look great! IMHO

Jack always said that there is a lot of flies you can tie off of a ringneck pheasant. I live in the Northeast, and my hoppers are the Letort Hopper pattern. One late August day I had some time to fish, but I need some hoppers. So I tied one being in a hurry I clipped the hair like an elk hair caddis and well I tied a few more the right way and when fishing. the hopper with just the elk hair caddis type head actually fished better and it's really quick to tie. You are right, the fish see all the new junk and the tune into it and Gartside Hopper, a Letort Hopper or any number of the old school hopper patterns will clean up since the fish don't see those all the time these days. This CCP-virus will pass, how much damage it's going to do beyond the medical side remains to be seen, on the other hand, the Fishing Season opened early this year here in CT. I plan on fishing every day till the first day of Rifle Deer Season. My seasonal flying job is not going to happen this year so I will just tie flies, and fish. June I am going to camp out on the Beaverkill for the whole month. Or wander around PA. Gas is going to be cheap this summer.

Love the videos learned alot this will be my second year fly fishing and literally went an got a kit with a vice and bought some materials in the beginning of this quarantine been spending my evenings watching your videos and tying love that your a talker an take the time to explain everything can't wait to see more

I started tying less than a year ago but I'm still going to enter.
Jack had this long cut 'funky' dubbing called Magic stuff or something. He tied a sand eel fly with it. When head cement or acetone was applied to the dubbed body it would melt to for a super-slick sand eel pattern. He would make the melting process very theatrical like a magician as Kelly said.
Gartside’s Secret Stuff is what you meant. You can still get it on Jack’s website which is being maintained by an old friend.
The old school tyers of which I am, just turned 75, and the comments about casual techniques in hair stacking does not hold true for Dave Whitlocks flies , Mister Hoppertunity as he would say tied absolutely immaculate flies. I share your dislike for foam flies.I remember the first time I got an order for Chernoble Ants in green for the Nasqualloa hatch on the Bitterroot. Not a fly I would ever want to admit that I tied but they must have worked as they ordered all total 60 or 70 dozen of the wierd ass things.
Here is my question for the contest . watched a tyer put wax on the thread did a whip finish and he said it's almost as good as cement,since the heat of the threat being ppulled tight melts the wax and drys back to being harder . Does it work ?

I suggest you google Jack Sutton and what some say is the best wet fly ever made “ the Despair”

Have you ever tried it fishing flys with a long limber spinning rod? And would you still consider it fly fishing despite the spinning rod? Just thinking a spinning rod could have some advantages in tight quarters! Thighs lines! Stay safe!

Kelly, this is an awesome fly, great choice!! This pattern is one of my favorites too... As an old school tyer myself, watching these last few patterns you’ve posted recently is like taking a trip back in time to what fly tying was like back before all the synthetics and foam... Which brings me to a point and my only complaint... I love the dubbing loop technique for a multi color body, but Superfine dubbing is a synthetic, just FYI... Are we allowed to use superfine dubbing for the terrestrial fly competition?

Kelly, Just a thought as you mentioned that this hopper is a bit harder to see as if gets in the film... any downside to add a bit of white Antron on top? do you think it would be visible from the bottom? I believe old school pattern work always better IMO and sometimes we get caught up with all of the new (fun) hype about new materials. Curious on your point of view with adding "indicators" in general. Thanks

Isn't the dubbing you used a synthetic. Superfine is synthetic I believe. I'm not sure about the cinnamon caddis dubbing you used. Awesome channel though! Very interesting!

No Rubber Legs allowed. The only synthetic material allowed is wire for ribbing and glue/lacquer
