  • The Type 072A landing ship, or Yuting-II of the People's Liberation Army Navy is a class of large amphibious warfare ship developed as an enlarged version of the Type 072-III landing craft, adding an aft helicopter deck for a medium-sized helicopter and more room for troops. A total of 15 ships were built entirely domestically. The first nine ships entered service from 2003 to 2005.

While at first glance, theses little ships look like clay pigeons best suited for target practice, there is a ton of capability in these little guys. Sure, they are very lightly armed, but thy have plenty of space available to utilize for small manpad defense teams and gear to be deployed. While not fast, the can do a solid 15 +/- knots so they are mobile and maneuverable. They also have a considerable un refueled range and endurance, so they can self deploy to almost any where from Alaska to Australia to India. They can carry between 40 and 80 combat vehicles, and deliver them to the beach. They have a through and through design. That means vehicles can be driven in one end and out the other. Which allows these to be used as a force multiplier. One of these can be run up on the beach, anchored in place, and it becomes an instant pier. That means other lighter type vessels could dock with the stern of these ships and off load their cargos and they would pass through these ships to the beach. And the Chinese have literally thousands and thousands of commercial small cargo vessels in service perfectly suited for that task already running around in service today. Plus they have an active large number of shipyards cranking out literally hundreds more of those little lighter type ships annually. And some of those are also beachable.
The these 15 little ships outnumber the US Navy, US Army and US Merchant Marine count by, 15. We currently have nothing in our inventory matching the capabilities of these little ships.

Look exactly like the British Round Table class landing ship logistics used in the Falkland war.

Are there any major shortcomings of this model? It looks from your presentation to be a very versatile design, but would present a big target during an amphib operation. Almost certainly, use of this type would have to depend on establishment of air superiority during and after.

It would heavily rely on some type of air cover. The design is sound and really no different than any other that other nations would have. To be honest there isn't much you can do with this type of design for improvement other than appearance.

@@keithmoore5306 That's actually a good point. Doesn't look like they are carrying much in the way of a point-defense system or any other anti-missile armament.

@@horusfalcon from what i can tell from the video it has nothing defensive except maybe some armor plating at spots! then again the chinese don't care about high casualty's they've got the numbers to win anyway and it only helps them with domestics issues like it's that many less to feed and house!!

@@keithmoore5306 they probably care if the loses are close to 100%. :P
Anyway they might have unlimited soldiers they can throw away. But they don’t have unlimited landing ships.

These were built to intimidate weaker South China Sea neighbors. But they are against the US Navy if these are used against the Filipinos even if they only shoot water cannons against wooden supply boats.
