The 1975 album came out before this one in 2013 and several of the songs from their album were released back in 2012, which is largely why when people hear this song, they think of the 1975 rather than the other way around. The 1975 actually formed in 2002, and simply did not get widespread media attention for the album they released in 2013, until 2014. Not to mention, this song is not really representative of Hellogoodbye as a whole, only one sound that they've (or should I say he, since it's largely Forrest Kline) produced, while it fits more in style with what the 1975 have consistently released. I think that's probably why people say this sounds like the 1975. Also, the main connection people are making is to the singers voice, which HAS drastically changed over the years. This vocal style is absolutely nothing like what we've heard from them in the past, but is something people have consistently heard from Matty. That's not to say that it isn't a legitimate sound for them, or that is is intentionally referential. That being said, I have nothing against either band and don't feel that one was particularly influenced by the other.
I heard this on the 1975 station and I noticed I loved this song- I was pleasantly surprised when I found out it was hellogoodbye! I didn't know they were still making music. I use to listen to that Zombies (can't remember rest of title 😂) album constantly back when it came out.
I know some people miss their old style including me (and their sappy love songs too), but I actually really like their new change of sound. It's a totally different style and they still rock it! I hope Forrest and the band are still mak'n music. Some good stuff man.
