Today I had the joy of seeing the MET HD transmission via satellite for cinemas, of this beautiful opera. Dmitri was outstanding as always, not to mention is recovery. Not affected his voice at all. Standing ovation for more than 20 minutes.... OMG !
I am a tenor and listen a lot to them.When I want to listen to a great singer of other voice type,he is number one for me. He is more or less a perfect singer.....I saw a live broadcast from Met of Il Trovatore last winter. Cant wait for the next performance....

I realize this is only a story, the singing, acting and glorious music bring it to life. Ponder all the strife, bitterness, and vengeance that might have vanished in one fell swoop if Leonora had loved him?? His life may have been answered on so many fronts by her loving him. Sad story!!! How often do we miss our life's live and purpose when it's right in front of us?😢
Дмитрий Александрович Хворостовский - великий баритон и артист в самом высоком значении этого слова. Он захватывает и слушателя, и зрителя. И славу мировую приобрел он не даром. Согласен с теми, кто сравнил его с Шаляпиным. Огромное спасибо за возможность посмотреть запись этого концерта! К ней только одна претензия, как ко всем, практически, из-за непрфессионализма операторов и монтажеров. Им дана общая установка на развлекаж скучающих зрителей. Только войдешь в контакт с певцом, ан-нет, прервут, переведут камеру на какого-нибудь оркестранта. Как-будто назло! От глубокого бесчувствия и непонимания существа дела. Так обидно, так трудно с этим смиряться! В этих записях особенно, поскольку от Хворостовского невозможно отвести глаз. Он переживает и играет всем телом, как великий актер и музыкант. Исправить этотневозможно, но хотя бы высказаться необходимо. Светлая память талантливейшему человеку!

@bodiloto He's on the lyrical end of the Verdian baritone. Remember, Verdi's earlier operas are more bel canto. Yes, in the past decades they were sung by huge-voiced baritones. DH is not that, but why is the lyricism he brings to the roles *wrong*? Don't pose yourself as the ultimate authority on who is a "true verdian baritone" and who is not, please.

it depends small in what sense. What we usually call "small" is a lack of high resonance. His voice tends to be large, and not sharp enough to be really big. Each time he doesn't have a microphone and sing with an orchestra you can see that he struggles in much effort to sing. He's not an "easy singer", his singing need much strength to get anywhere, and much muscle
A year ago I went to a recital in Munich with Evgeni Kissin. It was the fifth row, over 100 EUR. But then, Kissin is a big name, could have been because of that. The Rigoletto is going to be a traditional production, the Onegin some modern thing... DH will also be singing Papa Germont in London. The rest is in the USA :-( Hell, other parents would kill for children who listen to opera! XD

I've seen Hvorostovsky at the Met several times. I would call his voice compact. It's not small, but even at fortissimo it doesn't have a ton of impact in a house the size of the Met. As for tonal beauty, I've heard him sing very beautifully a couple of times, and less beautifully a few other times. That said, he's been at it for more than twenty years already. Also, there don't seem to be too many new baritones on the rise, which is worrisome.
+jrosings1 This is a bit tough for me, also being a singer myself and not having heard him live. But from what I have seen on Dvd (obviously the voice is through machines), his rigidity should seriously and negatively impact his singing in an opera. I don't know if you've seen him in recitals or operas but I would expect him to battle in an opera. He is a Verdian baritone (in terms of his voice), which is supposed to be cheeky and playful but his body (rigidity) makes him a bass, in the Carlos, Commendatore style. So it will be interesting to know in which setting you've heard him.

No question about stunning voice color and beatiful top notes but this is definitely not Verdi and in some points he's not even doing right the score. He does many better things than this.
Good indeed very good. superb even. But baritone of the century,? No. Bastianini. Top notes far more open, tone even richer and heavier,. A genuine dramatic baritone with all the necessary lyricism for this aria. And a technique able to assail this treacherous , but most glorious aria. Ettore Bastianini, the King!

true. He's not Merrill. His voice is softened by an excess of darkness that makes him do much effort all the time. It's great for russian romances, russian songs, recital, or microphoned performances, and even for some roles at the opera, but not much and in houses not too big. But I love listening to his recordings. The production on his voice makes it very enjoyable.

Listen to the phrase: "my dagger will avenge my tears" in Hvorostovski's and to the phrase "e le lacrime mie" in Bastianini's version. At 4.08-4.10 Bastianini's voice trembles. Cannot support the tension and high notes. The same happens at 4.42-4.45.

it depends small in what sense. What we usually call "small" is a lack of high resonance. His voice tends to be large, and not sharp enough to be really big. Each time he doesn't have a microphone and sing with an orchestra you can see that he struggles in much effort to sing. He's not an "easy singer", his singing need much strength to get anywhere, and much muscle

A year ago I went to a recital in Munich with Evgeni Kissin. It was the fifth row, over 100 EUR. But then, Kissin is a big name, could have been because of that.
The Rigoletto is going to be a traditional production, the Onegin some modern thing... DH will also be singing Papa Germont in London. The rest is in the USA :-(

I've seen Hvorostovsky at the Met several times. I would call his voice compact. It's not small, but even at fortissimo it doesn't have a ton of impact in a house the size of the Met. As for tonal beauty, I've heard him sing very beautifully a couple of times, and less beautifully a few other times. That said, he's been at it for more than twenty years already. Also, there don't seem to be too many new baritones on the rise, which is worrisome.
+jrosings1 This is a bit tough for me, also being a singer myself and not having heard him live. But from what I have seen on Dvd (obviously the voice is through machines), his rigidity should seriously and negatively impact his singing in an opera. I don't know if you've seen him in recitals or operas but I would expect him to battle in an opera.
He is a Verdian baritone (in terms of his voice), which is supposed to be cheeky and playful but his body (rigidity) makes him a bass, in the Carlos, Commendatore style. So it will be interesting to know in which setting you've heard him.
M Malibongwe I've only seen him in operas. Ernani, Simon Boccanegra, twice in Rigoletto, Trovatore, and a couple of others.

No question about stunning voice color and beatiful top notes but this is definitely not Verdi and in some points he's not even doing right the score. He does many better things than this.
Good indeed very good. superb even. But baritone of the century,? No. Bastianini. Top notes far more open, tone even richer and heavier,. A genuine dramatic baritone with all the necessary lyricism for this aria. And a technique able to assail this treacherous , but most glorious aria. Ettore Bastianini, the King!

His voice very nice but no have the power to sing Verdi dramatic barython in Comte di luna he have some part and aspirations have some problems,He s voice for Russian opera like Onegin quen spades,is more lyric baryton,but not the big baryton for Verdi
true. He's not Merrill. His voice is softened by an excess of darkness that makes him do much effort all the time. It's great for russian romances, russian songs, recital, or microphoned performances, and even for some roles at the opera, but not much and in houses not too big. But I love listening to his recordings. The production on his voice makes it very enjoyable.
