    9s are more authentic to MK’s sound. On the other hand, the 10s are more how I like my own playing to sound; I am nowhere near as good as MK, but I know who I am and what my own sound is

    Back in the early 70s, 08s were the strings of choice of top musicians. Les Paul, for example, used 08s on the plain strings, and a little bigger strings on the wound. Yngwie Malmsteen does the exact same thing today, Fender sells them as Yngwie Malmsteen Strings. I personally play with 08s. Best decision I ever made concerning strings. I use Ernie Ball Extra Slinky. Ernie Ball also makes a stainless steel version of the Extra Slinky.

    bro im literally sitting here deciding whether to get 9s or 10s next, while learning sultans separately (but as my main guitar thing at the moment and inspiring the idea to get new strings) and I just olook up string comparisons on YT, no mentions of sultans, and this video tailor made for me comes up

    9's without a doubt. It has that spank! It would have been interesting to have 8's in the comparison. As we might suspect MK may have used 8's during the early recordings.

      Ingo Raven may I ask how you can afford all these guitars? Especially knopfler's schecter, that's one of my dream guitars.

    • @IngoRaven
      @IngoRaven  9 лет назад +2

      adlovett98 The guitar in the video is mine, a Japanese Squier copy of a Fender. I own several guitars like this, some part-o-casters, and a few more. Almost all of those fancy expensive guitars are NOT MINE (great if they were ;) true for a 1960 Les Paul, 60ies Strat, various MK artist Strats, 1932 national, ..., and the Knopfler Schecter Strat. These belong to friends or collectors who lend me the guitars, or allow me to make a video with them.

      Ingo Raven what about the schecter?

  • @Sanglierification

    it's not by changing strings that you'll get Knopfler early songs sound. I read somewhere in a very old magazine that the sound engineer loved doing experiences and he puts something in post audio recording that make his sound so beautifully squeal.

    Custom shop strats always have 10's .

    I'm guessing Ingo normally plays 10's.

  • @BobK5
    @BobK5 4 года назад

    Why do Fender Custom shop Stratocaster 60,s ri come with 10’s if 08’s were used in the 1960’s? I prefer 09’s there’s nothing heroic or substantially different about 10’s to justify them other than they’re easier to play straight notes with no modulation or expression, I.e jazz style, on the other hand, gypsy jazz style is best with lighter strings. Rock n Roll is 09’s or less unless you tune down a half step or more and you want to bring the string tension back up by using 9.5’s or 10’s. No Rock and Roller uses 10’s, 11’s or 13’s at standard pitch and sounds like a rock and roller as far as I know, but I might be wrong of course 🤔 (just adding that guitar scale length changes all that and might dictate 10’s on a Les Paul style guitar)

      There were no packaged 8's to buy in the 60s. Ernie Ball didn't start widely selling packaged Super Slinky's (9's) until the 70's, and 8's came later.

    9s sounds better. More like early straits. The 10s sound too full sounding.

    • @vpsaxman
      @vpsaxman 7 лет назад +6

      That's why people prefer the 10s. But it makes a strat sounds less like a strat.

    There is no surprise here. The 9s sound weaker and thinner.

    • @IngoRaven
      @IngoRaven  10 лет назад +4

      The idea was to tell which strings sound closer to the original. There is a poll in the corresponding blog post on my site, so far 62% of all who vote think that the 009s sound closer to it.

    • @helixworld
      @helixworld 10 лет назад

      If you want to make it brighter, couldn't you use a 300k tone pot or simply adjust the treble on the amp? That way it doesn't affect the playability and feel.

    • @bradbolin2139
      @bradbolin2139 6 лет назад

      No,string gauge affects more than just how bright a guitar is.

    • @bradbolin2139
      @bradbolin2139 6 лет назад +1

      Affecting playability and feel in this case is what you want. Deep bends sound different with lighter strings, they don't die as quickly.

      the 9 ..s r snappier....and more presence.....

  • @AutomatorMC
    @AutomatorMC 4 года назад +4

    These 9 vs 10 videos are funny. this player obviously uses 9's normally so 10's are a struggle for him. If you gig a lot use 10's and if you are a casual player use 9's. It's all about your finger strength at the time.
    If I switched from 10's to 9's right now everything would buzz, vibrato would be too fast, and my bends would go sharp.
