  • 안녕하세요 !
I’ve done many research for a month and finally this is a little grammar video that might help your Korean pronunciation!
(TMI : I’ve looked all over my phonetic books which I had studied back in the day in my university and have also read many many theses. LOL)
If you have had difficulty pronouncing Korean plain, aspirated, and tense consonants, this video would help you grasp the basic concept of them and get the idea.
And as far as I know, no one has taught/covered these 4 ways on RUclips yet. So I think this could be an interesting and new approach to Korean consonants.
I hope you like this video
    Thank you :)

I understand how to pronounce and distinguish them, but it is still pretty hard to distinguish while listening to normal daily phrases. I guess you just need to get used to it.
Personally, I find it easier when the consonants are in the middle of the word because they sound a little like the small tsu (っ) in Japanese.

    • @disruptor6550

Yeah agreed. It is indeed hard to distinguish them in everyday phrases. But I guess that just comes from experience by getting used to them after some time.

True. I guess our problem is that they pronounce ㅂ as p, ㅁ as b, ㅍ as p, ㄷ and ㅌ as t, ㄱ and ㅋas k.. We have problems finding out when to pronounce them as to what roman alphabet they represent. More kdrama please 😍 😃

I just wanna ask, when a double consonants between two vowels like 아까,어때, 오빠or 예쁘게 it seems like they are pronounced as 악까,얻때, 옵빠 and 옙쁘게. So these double consonants are always pronounce like you're prepared to say them in tense at the end of a syllabe in a syllable before them? But when pronouncing them syllable by syllable it can pronounce either of the 2 like 1.)어-때 as 얻-때 or 예-쁘-다 as옙-쁘-다 right?

@@aldrinalipio9808 yes there is a small sound of the double consonant before you release the sound on the second syllable. That is a good observation that you made, so I would say when in doubt, imitate what you hear from native speakers.

Foreign language learners! Never ignore the pronunciation. Never. Ever.
I'm not gonna lie, I totally ignored the spelling of plain and tense consonants. I had no idea what's the difference between them and how to spell them. I thought: "yeah, whatever, I'm a foreigner, who cares, they will understand me". Then the day came when I was introduced to my first proper korean curse word. Internet quite quickly made me aware of the fact that the pronunciation of this word is extremely similar to the number 18.... And so here I am, humbly doing my long-overdue research :D

Kudos, best vid on this topic imo. I always notice that and this vid confirm it. Korean often use tone1or5 with ㅂ and tone4 with ㅍ (tone number in my language). When many times, they don't even do different "Aspirated" for that two type. But they always different the tone when they try to stress them. My language has tone (5 tones) which most language won't so they don't understand this concept well. But our people can notice that at glance. Yes, we can even change amount of air and maintain the tone because we learn about the tone from kid lol. Different tone is different word at all so it's really important to control your tone even with different Consonants in language with tone. So the air method is not that effective.
And I really like it that you pronounce example in different way so that we can know which part is free which part is strict tone.

Now, my doubt is when aspirated consonants(ㅋ,ㅌ,ㅊ,ㅍ) are between consonant(batchim) and a vowel like 발키다 (ㅋ is between ㄹ and ㅣ), does the aspirated consonants also pronounced longer or have a preparation/short pause before we say them than plain consonants(ㄱ,ㄷ,ㅂ,ㅈ) ? Like 아파 is like 압파 or 발키다 is like 발K-키다 and 아바 is just 아바 or 발기다 is just 발기다 straightly.

@@aldrinalipio9808 It is simply like 아파 and 발키다 because Korean is not a stress-timed language like English. What do I mean with that? In 발키다 you pronounce every syllable as it is. So 발키다 is 발.키.다
The thing I advice you to be aware of is about double 받침 and also the sound changes when some letters meet each other (which is another lesson, but I think not only Minji has it but also TTMIK and Billy all have it as well).

the tense consonants basically just sound voiced to me. so, to my ears, ㅌ sounds like the t in "tore" while ㄷ sounds like t in "store" (in initial position anyway - i realize that medially ㄷ is voiced), but then ㄸ basically just sounds exactly like the d in "door" to me. (i'm not saying this is how things are, just how they sound to my ears. these "tense" consonants are a little bizarre, and i know of no other languages besides korean that even have them.) in any case, thanks for making this! this is without question the best youtube video i've seen so far on how to distinguish these sounds.

But when pronouncing them syllable by syllable it can pronounce either of the 2 like 1.)어-때 as 얻-때 or 예-쁘-다 as옙-쁘-다 right?
      or
      2.)어때 as 어-때 or 예쁘다 as 예-쁘-다?

    • @lkj2727
      @lkj2727 3 года назад

@@aldrinalipio9808 Technically speaking, it depends. For example, '예' from '예쁘다' is a long vowel. So it should be pronounced '예-쁘다'.
But in current colloquial Korean pronunciation, or in real life, even 99% of the native Korean speakers ignore these 'long vowel' thing. So it is very correct that you often hear Koreans pronounce '예쁘다' as '옙쁘다', because blocking the air flow in mouth makes it more natural to pronounce double consonants .
It is same for other cases like '아까', '오빠', '어때', etc. As you have stated, pronouncing those words as if it is '악까', '옵빠', '얻때' actually makes it sound more natural.

so in the second technique, the ㅂ and the ㅍ have the same sound, but the ㅍ just needs more air.. is that right?

    • @minjiteacheskorean
      @minjiteacheskorean  4 года назад +9

Well, I would say ㅍ sounds a bit higher than ㅂ in that situation (where ㅂ or ㅍ comes at the very first in a syllable) But, like I mentioned in the video, I'd like to recommend you to focus more on the pitch of the next following vowels😊
      e.g. Compare these two ones
      달을 보세요 탈을 보세요 6:18
(You'll easily notice the first 을 sounds lower than the second one)
