I was lucky enough to see him in LA after that single Black Voices came out and he walked onto the stage with at the opening with a large vertical drum that went from his waste to his ankle approximately slung over his shoulder and walked around during the show. It was a relatively small club venue in Hollywood. Really intimate. I can't remember that much, other than coming away with feeling that it was as one of the most amazing shows ever in my life. He was out from kinda singing some of the horn parts. Just mind blowing. That my favorite record, by a mile, the original Black Voices with about 6 songs from 1999. Just stunning. But he's a true master, so he did so many worthwhile recording, but I recommend you seek that out, Black Voices.
I got the chance to meet him a couple of years ago when he came through my city to play. He was a very sweet, kind and humble man. His playing reflected that. Such a subtlety in his playing but oh, was it sooooo deep!!!!

The subtlety and confidence in those rhythms is the work of an utmost master of the craft.
Feel so grateful to have been able to live a life where Tony Allen blessed us with his music
