I’m 36, had this all my life. In high school I got straight A’s all year, got to my exams, got A’s on every one, then had an auditory exam bc the printer broke. I failed that one. I tried to explain that I couldn’t understand an exam if it was given to me orally. They said that didn’t make sense and the failing grade stands.
Thank you for spreading the word. If future generations have more awareness I will be very happy about that.

I’m so sorry you had to experience that!! I would have felt the same way. There is not enough awareness around APD. Hopefully it will grouped into other learning disabilities so people can have accommodations for it!

Ok... this makes a lot more sense to me now. This is something I've struggled with for years and I always catch myself asking people to repeat things and sometimes while they are repeating it I'll cut them off when I process what they said before and a lot of times I struggle with spoken instruction at work... my boss got mad at me a lot and I never understood why it was so difficult to process what i was told and also to remember it. I also thought it might have something to do with my ADHD it certainly doesn't help. Lol. I'm glad I found an answer and I'm hoping I can get some sort of therapy for it.

I’m not diagnosed but I think I may have this. Lately it’s gotten so bad that my friends get annoyed with me cause I always hear absolutely nonsensical things. Thankyou for this.

Absolutely ironic how there’s no captions on a video made by an audiologist. I would encourage the poster of this video to correct this to increase accessibility and allow people with the condition discussed (APD) to view the video.

Vivian, thank you for your feedback, you can change the settings on the player to allow subtitles if needed. I hope that helps

Thank you! This gave me the courage now to ask for an audiologist referral.

I don't know if this is a spectrum kind of thing, but I think this is something that I struggle with. I used to work in fast food taking orders on the headset. In alot of stores most, if not all, workers wear headsets, so they can hear all of the order taking. I struggled alot to understand alot of customers even though all of my coworkers understood clearly, so I would have to double check alot. My first work place was really toxic so they kept telling me I had hearing issues, but I knew that wasn't it. Even know, unless I can watch someone's lips move, I can really struggle to understand them

Yea, I think it's a spectrum. I myself have APD, and it's a broad umbrella term for many things regarding issues regarding your auditory processing system. As the doctor mentioned, people call it different names and that is due to it probably being a spectrum.

I'm a late diagnosed/identified autistic woman who found out last year September at 26, I've always struggled with my auditory processing skills and was speech delayed as a child and didn't know that auditory processing issues are common in autism. Can this occur as well if speech delayed?

    • @TheAngelaloucks
      @TheAngelaloucks 2 года назад +1

      Yes, it can.

Im 29, never got an official diagnosis but when i was young i clearly went for auditory testing, had speech therapy, was in special education, had 1 on 1 time up till 5th grade. Middle school i decided i wanted to be treated more "normally" but looking back, i will never be able to function lile the majority and thats the truth. I can try my way but we gotta stick to our strong suits... And still though all that i was never told directly what my diagnosis was😒. So at age 28 i found out the diagnosis from my own research. And it explains all my "failures" lol. Why getting a degree in Spanish and LANGUAGE translation literally would not be in the cards and basically failing in college.
The biggest thing i wish was that there should have been a making it in the real world program for highschoolers before graduating 😒. I wouldnt have wasted $$$$$ on college (it really was my 3rd year, 1st semester spanish that made me not come back. I transfered from a local college to a top tier uni and the level of these kids are like geniuses. I literally barely just passed my 1st semester. Made me feel even worse for having learning disabilities amongst a group of the brightest. Now i wouldnt say im dumb, but certainly faired above average in grade school.
Anyway. As an adult in the workplace, i was humiliated several times and basically called "not confident" just cause im processing things slower. My mistake was taking basically a call job over the data entry 😒 and the other job was because i couldnt have memory recall (from all phone calls) with constant changing details. I was just not prepared about real world success. Only school teaches how to graduate.
My current job ive been at for 7 months now but i asked to record all the spoken conversations i needed to remember so i can replay and make notes afterward. It has worked thus far and im pretty settled now that i was able to keep it. But my concern is, im still at basically minimum wage and my luck so far with my learning disabilities and not being able to keep a job, im concerned if when im ready to jump to a new job, ill be jobless cause all i need is TIME and proper instruction and now i know, jobs that depend less on AUDITORY skills 😞. But still.. where is the adult support group lmaoo. I once worked a fundraiser for the wealthy to donate their money to for basically learning disabled children (me), trying to get them help through college and keel jobs. But i cant help but feel a little bitter. Cause amongst many of these people in the room, i was probably one of the few that still stood disadvantaged (financially and otherwise) with no help, amongst many who can't fully comprehend what its like to have learning difficulties. It really just seems its for the wealthy to throw their money at for tax reasons or whatever. Some cause they have children
But it just feels terrible 😒. Even the organizer of the foundation said she doesnt even understand lol. As here i am, someone who may understand the most, who may be able to mask it very well considering, but still given pennies for the job (as people were giving thousands for fun lol) and no help in any variety of ways lol. Its like a giant slap in the face 😒. But i guess thats life....unfortunately lol

I have suspected apd for some time. I recently got diagnosed with adhd and part of my testing suggests auditory processing defecit. I would love to know what resources out there. I would liked to be tested but unsure availability thru insurance and area.

you have to find the right ear doctor who can diagnose that, it takes some time to find one, but if it's a good one, then you'll be relieved to find that your suspicion may have been confirmed

The speaking mistakes you made in this video were small, but made it quite difficilt for me (as soneone with APD) to follow. When my brain has to stop, rewind, and re-record multiple times, it's hard to absorb and retain a list of things. Otherwise, thank you :-D
