Sonic was seen losing his rings when taking damage to metal sonic which in this case should mean sonic is vulnerable to any attack from the metal guy, after this sonic gets attacked by a laser, lemme repeat myself, ,LASER, but sonic doesn't lose a life whatsoever. Using this information we can determine that metal sonic should've won pretty unfairly but thanks to Sonic's massive plot armor,he doesn't.
