Thank you Brandon, Phil, Nicholas and every single person that helped make this documentary become a reality. It was absolutely wonderfully done and a beautiful acknowledgment of the legend that Phil Collins is. Bravo 👏🏼
As somebody with a terminal illness myself, most people can't even imagine the guts it takes to open up like this in the public while in poor health. Thanks for defining the 80's Phil.
What broke me was seeing him clutching those drumsticks all the way through the interview. And every so often there’s a wistful look in his eyes while holding them. You can tell he’s desperate to play but knows he can’t. I’ve always loved Phil first and foremost as a drummer so as a fan - it breaks my heart. But we have decades of great music (Flaming Youth, Genesis, Brand X, solo etc) to fall back on. Thank you Phil for everything.
Respect to Phil. While I’m neither a drummer nor a physiotherapist, watching your video made me truly appreciate how physically demanding drumming is. In fact, I would argue that it deserves to be regarded on the same level as any physically intense sport. Athletes undergo massages, therapy, stretching, and more to maintain their health and performance, and I believe drummers should have access to similar care. After hearing your story and researching the experiences of other drummers, it’s clear that prolonged drumming can take a significant toll on the body. I think Drumeo should consider incorporating regular chapters on therapy, exercises, and injury prevention for drummers. Music is, of course, the main focus, but promoting methods to avoid long-term damage or illness could be just as crucial for the well-being of drummers. Genius drummer.
I think the reason Phil Collins became big is not only because of his drumming skills, but also because of his distinctive drumming style. Chad Smith said it right. It's the same with his voice. Out of a hundred voices, Phil Collins' voice is instantly recognizable, and that's the point. You can be a great singer or drummer technically, but what sets you apart is a certain uniqueness.
All I can say is just this.....Thank You......and now I will go cry. I have loved Phil since I was a little girl....1978 was the first time I heard Genesis and followed on to be a Phil fan going solo, as well as a Peter fan going solo. My whole life I could bever get enough of Phil. And I feel this is closure. Knowing I will never get to see him live ever again. I have never met the man. And I probably will never get the chance. And I am ok with that. Because of him I played drums until I couldn't anymore. I so understand what he was talking about and i get him. It's not just me being a fan.....it's about feeling the resemblance.
I bought the Genesis Live album (1973) when I was 11yrs old in 1976 and have followed Phil's career ever since . He will always be a Drumming Hero to me .
Genesis Live was also my first album of theirs, I was 12 and bought it with pocket money in 1974. I had two older friends, they were brothers & introduced me to lots of music that I would otherwise never have known about at that age. I'm not a drummer but I have so much admiration for Phil, such a great fella.
14:00 - What?! His drumming on 'Living Forever' is one of the highlights for me on the 'We Can't Dance' album! 😀 Anyway, this whole series of Phil Collins videos has been super-interesting and of course also very touching, and thank you very much drumeo, Phil, Nic and everybody else who'd been involved in creating it! 😊🙏💚☀️🥁
@@MattLathrum yea man, it's a funny juxtaposition sometimes: the different relationships an artist and a listener can have with a song. "...And then there were three" anyone? Love that record.
@@mightyV444 There's a live bootleg on YT of them rehearsing it in 92 for the tour. It was eventually cut from the set, but he kills it. Worth a listen!
I feel his pain! I'm 10 years younger, and didn't have anything CLOSE to his career, but I know how the hands feel when trying to just HOLD the sticks! Those closeups of him fondling the drumsticks hit a chord with me.. he's a drummer... he wants to play....SO glad that I got to experience him live!
Yes- that was what held my ❤ - holding of his drumsticks. My son held his with similar- He is holding them in his hands in his coffin . Whole his Soul Flys through the Heavens Rocking in the Free World.❤
Thanks to Phil Collins for everything. I've always loved his drumming and started playing drums because of him. I would love to hear him drum again and keep my fingers crossed that his health problems will improve. :))
I've been a fan of Phil Collins since his solo career in the 1980s. It's nice to hear his story about his career in his own words. Few musicians have been as successful as Phil, and he's humble about it. ❤
What a total musician, I can tell he is pretty much devastated he can't play anymore, but he'll deal with it the best he can, he's proud of his kids, and in the end that's all you can hope for.
God I loved this guy all my life. Live DVDs and the carousel cd is amazing. The songs, the players, the legacy, the influence. Thanks mate. I wish I could click my fingers and go back to relive everything you've done.
Well done Philip, without you all these years, where were we? ❤❤❤ Thank you so much for all these good feelings back then and now... 💯👍🥇💪🙂🥁🎤🎹 God bless you
As an animation artist I can attest that features take a long time especially hand drawn animation. Always loved his involvement in Tarzan. As a drummer, well, he is one of the big reasons I picked up sticks in the 80s and played along to cassettes of rock, prog and alternative. Just a legendary career and much respect for his appearing on the final tour.
Dear Phil, while I understand your sentiment about wanting to maintain the high standards you've always set for yourself, I hope you’ll consider this: art evolves just as artists do. Fans don’t expect perfection; they crave authenticity and connection. Your voice, your creativity, and your perspective today are uniquely valuable, no matter how they manifest. Music is not only about technical prowess but about emotion and storytelling-things you’ve mastered throughout your career. Even if the process feels different now, your legacy ensures that anything you create will carry immense weight and meaning. Please don’t let the fear of change stop you from sharing your gift. A stripped-down album, or even "just" one heartfelt song would mean the world to us. Thank you for everything you've already given us. We’re here to support you, no matter how your journey in music unfolds. Love & Light to you and your family! Your Eric Rylee
Neil Peart told a great story of how he wanted Phil to be part of the first "Burning for Buddy" tribute, and he wrote him but Phil couldn't make it work due to scheduling issues, but Peart said he still had the letter Phil sent back with the cartoon drummer on the letterhead. He also relayed a story of how he ran into Phil leaving a shop on tour in the late 70s when I guess Rush and Genesis were in the same city at some point.
I have been revisiting the Genesis/Phil Collins catalog ever since you dropped the original video on 12-18-24. Thank you, Phil and DRUMEO. 2024 will forever be my Phil Collins Christmas. Being born in 75 and a kid through the 80s, you guys triggered a ton of great memories. 🤘🏼💥🖤
Really great ! Thank you for everything you do, stay healthy above all. From Paris with all my admiration, my respect and love for you Mr. Phil Collins. Thanks also to Nic !
I'm a drummer and a professional drum instructor. Phil is a one of a kind force. He's inspirational. He's also a big part of the reason that I work in depth with my students on ergonomics, posture and technique I don't want my students to have their passion hurt their bodies long term.
I love Phil Collins! My work screen saver is a picture of Phil singing from the Invisible Touch tour so I’m always seeing Phil. The 80s were the best for music especially Phil and Genesis. Thank you for talking to us about your life. I’m sorry you aren’t physically well but don’t let age get you down. Keep going. Your legacy is more than you know. I’d love to hear more stuff we haven’t heard before so keep talking! Saw you on the Serious Hits tour. Phenomenal!
I've always felt the drumming on Down and Out is great. I think it was our first introduction to Phil's concert toms on a Genesis record. Still sounds great. Very cool solo by Tony as well.
This interview is a real double edged sword. Fantastic to see and hear Phil, Horrendous to see and hear how frail Phil truly is. What a sad situation to be in. Phil we love
i wish i got a chance to see this man in his prime. loved his musid growing up. Genesis is my favorite band and his solo career inspired me to go after music and my other dreams. hes an icon and i wish him the best!
I still find it quite amazing that Phil and Peter's voices had a lot of similarity. Even going back now and listening to "Nursery Cryme", Phil's first album with Genesis, I pick out Phil's vocals that, when I was younger, always thought was Peter. I think the first we hear Phil is:"Here it comes again"...the refrain on "The Musical Box", and then lead vocals on "For Absent Friends". Obviously, when Phil took over lead vocals, it still sounded like Gabriel, just not as husky, with a higher range when he needed it.
Something nobody talks about when it comes to Phil's drumming: If you want to really nail his sound and style, you have to keep your hi-hat foot stomping those 8th notes while your stick is playing at the same time. His hi-hat sound was really distinctive because of that.
