I just returned this because if I walked directly toward the doorbell, even on the highest sensitivity, it wouldn’t recognize the movement. Tried it five times. Now on to trying other doorbells.
Hi please compare this with Eufy. Please also do a test on notification speed (wired and battery) and Recordings captured and what happens when a thief steals your doorbell as well as what Recordings are available after the doorbell is gone. This seems like a strong contender, however my concerns are the recordings are local and if stolen. From this video it seems that Tapo alerts are faster and cleaner. Eufy seem to just spam us with all the alerts. Also will be good if you can share the level of controls available. Such as whether theres a feature to set motion detection distance to lights on/ audio. Also, well done on the review.
I have had the D225 set up for about a month now, overall I am happy with it, The only flaw I can find which seems to me more of an app issue then the actual doorbell. I have SD card installed and set to 24/7 recording with loop recording, when the app thinks the SD card is full I can no longer view recording/events in the app, even though when I pull out the SD card I able to verify that it the doorbell is recording and doing loop recording as intended but the app won't let me view the recordings, the fix to this is that I have to format the SD card and then I can view recording again. So ultimately this seems to be an app issue rather then a hardware issue.
2 questions. First, when recording 24/7 do you still get motion notifications? Second, any idea how many days a 512gb card will hold recordings? I’m coming off an old Eufy that just doesn’t detect a lot anymore so continuous would be awesome
I have been using tapo for years, got rid of vivint lung ago, Vivint camera lags and doesn't show the most important within the time frame you want to see, Tapo has been great to me while I'm on the road etc.
I read something that disturbs me and perhaps you can try if doorbell is still set up or you can rig it to a power supply. I have not bought this doorbell yet. Someone on reddit said that on iphone or android IF CELL PHONE IS LOCKED and someone presses the Tapo doorbell that you might not be able to hear it ring notification sound (in your pocket) and unlock your phone in time to answer. In other words, I think they are stating that the video call comes in a different manner than a regular phone call with their app. Perhaps you can test this for us all. If that is the case, and you cannot get to your phone fast enough or sound is not loud enough while phone is in pocket, this could be bad news imo. Thanks so much!!!!! Great videos as always!!!!. I know D235 will come out soon
Just a heads up - the D225 will not connect to the H200 HUB at this time. There is a "coming soon" planned Firmware release in the future. Kind of bummed because it can connect to the H100 HUB but I have the 200. Oh well, I'll set up the chime and wait for the firmware.
Wyze didn't hold the crown for very long, and Arlo dropped it many years ago. I wonder how this product would last in a full sun area, being black faced it's going to cook.

There are a couple of things that Tapo needs to do to have a better user experience in their app and I will make a separate video on it soon...but overall, they have a pretty good system.
I have been using the Tapo D230S1 for a year and i love it. I have been eyeing the D225 since the CES announcement. Do you think it's worth the "upgrade?". Seems to be basically just a higher MaH battery.
@LifeHackster I have an apt that will be used for airbnb rental and this will be my 1st camera (no previous wiring etc). Will this be a better option for this?
@LifeHackster well camera is allowed on the outside but not the inside. And it has to be declared so the guest knows. My strata is mandating us all to all have a camera so I decided a camera at the back and doorbell on front.
only thing it's missing is ethernet but otherwise it's good, more wide angle lens to see packages and also anything off to the side, great image and sound quality.
@@LifeHackster It has terminals to connect to poewer. I have the Poe version already installed so sent the new one to a cousin who is buildind a new home. He forgot to get Poe to his front door . he can get power so this will suit his needs.
Interesting option! I have a question. I have an older Ring doorbell 3+ that gets the job done but, I have a solar panel wired into the power terminals and keeps my camera's battery always topped off with a charge so, will this Tapo doorbell cam support a solar panel wired to the power terminals to charge the battery like the Ring does? I'm NOT interested in the 24/7 recording but I have NO power and use a solar panel for charging. I really like the 180 degree view and higher resolution but if it won't charge from a solar panel this will not work for me. I have NOT touched my Ring 3+ since I installed it over 3yrs ago now and it is always charged unless it's below 32F for an extended period of time but I NEVER had to pull the battery either to charge it so, it's a great no-fuss solution for me. I LOVE your videos because you always review the latest stuff and are pretty thorough with the features/functions/short comings of each product. I ALWAYS look at other options/brands when it comes to Smart home products! Keep up your great videos!
I cannot answer the solar panel to the wire terminals because I don't want to cut the wiring of my panels just to test this but it does have a USB-C port on the back that you can use and that will charge it.... but it might too on the terminals...
@@LifeHackster OK, thanks! I CUT my solar panel connector off to work with my Ring 3+ and stripped the wires and connected them. I'm looking to NOT replace my solar panel I have installed on my gutter with a mount and just replace the doorbell as my porch is covered and gets no sunlight.

Looking at the eufy e340 as well, but that doesn’t have 24/7 recording. Great video and review. Question, do you or anyone know if the D225 will work with Tapo’s H200 hub?

I use a dahua Poe doorbell to a Poe network switch. Then added it to my dahua nvr. Full time view on cctv monitor. Better performance than wifi dependent doorbells.
Any recommendations to have more doorbell chimes around a property? I’m currently using multiple Echo dots, but that system doesn’t always work for some reason. It’s seems plug-in chimes don’t work over Wifi.
I have the Tapo C120 and it’s great the only thing I don’t like that you can’t delete one single event. The motion sensor is better than eufy. But in eufy you can delete one single event.
Looks very promising. It's a pity that the wired version does not use the existing doorbell chime. I believe the upcoming Reolink battery doorbell will.

Your videos are always great and used them to choose my security cameras. The only experience I have with a doorbell is the older google one. If you had to choose one which battery doorbell would you choose?
I have the Eufy S340 and is a great camera. It is connected to a Homebase S380, however the camera disconnects very frequently. Another consideration is that even when the camera is supposed to track movement in a 360 degree of view through rotation, it will not follow all objects that are outside of the field where the camera is pointing by default. You can change the default starting point, but still anything outside that starting point will not be detected by the camera. If you are OK with paying a subscription, the Ring Floodlight Pro is a great choice in my opinion...
Great video! I am currently researching everything as I just bought a house and am planning various projects. Until this video i was 99% set on getting the reolink wired wifi doorbell. Do you think this tapo one would be better than reolink? Some of my requirements are to have home assistant integration and atleast RTSV support for HA to work well. I was set on reolink due to this fact and planning to have all my other cams from them. Thank you!
@@LifeHackster I hesitated getting a Ring after seeing this video. I have a specific need to cover my (ancient) exterior, intercom system and found Ring provides an intercom 'kit' that's just the right size. Right now, there's a discount on the Ring Doorbell Plus + Solar Charger. These Tapo's made the choice a little more difficult but since I already have a Ring cam, it's just short of getting me to make the switch. Best thing about the Tapo is the cost and CVR with no subscription. That's huge.
I like this one. I purchased. Is this better than the Nest Wired? Ans how is the Google display integration? Does it pop up on the Google displays when pressed?
This has a wider FOV and also has local recording and no subscription needed. I’m not sure on the google displays but the last time I checked, auto live view only works with Google Nest doorbells.
Please do a comparison on all Tapo door bells. It's getting too confusing. I'm eyeing this one since the announcement. Coming from Ring, Eufy, Nest and Reolink.
Thank you for the review. Can you delete the motion activated recordings manually one by one? With my tapo c220 I can't and I miss that feature from Ring
If you have the micro SD card for local recording, then No. You can format it but will delete everything. The one in the cloud if you have the subscription, you can.
Does this work with some existing Tapo hub? For linking as chime and recording storage. Like the one comes with the battery camera bundle? I'm a bit concerned about the memory card in the doorbell itself. The other (d210) has even worse placement for the card.
It should be PIR motion based when no power but it seems like its PIR sensor is pretty sensitive too (max setting) that it starts recording pretty quick (check my porch pirate test)
Looks like a great option at a reasonable price. However, I'm disappointed that you can't record both sides of the conversation. I wonder if it can be activated with a software update. Either way, I'm in the market for a new video doorbell as my OG Google Video Doorbell has been having issues. It will not notify on my phone anymore or smart speakers. When people push the doorbell button the video just spins. My next choice had to have great video quality, be able to work with Google speakers, 24/7 recording(deal breaker if not), wired with battery backup and quick notifications. This looks like the total package. I went ahead and ordered. The front of my house can get really hot from the sun, so I purchased the 2 year extended warranty on Amazon for $10. They are running a 15% off promo. I pretty much got a discount and extra warranty for same price.
Not that I know of. Anything Battery or Solar will only record motion events. I think Reolink has one though Reolink trackmix LTE plus but it is expensive and big.
The D225 replaced both my Arlo and Wzye Pro. I couldn't be happier! The amount of controls they give you out the box is insane. Only personal cons i have: No web/browser view, and $3 a month for the rich notifications (but you get cloud storage too). Otherwise, I LOVE this doorbell!! Outstanding review btw 🙏🏽
question. can different users setup different notifications on their tapo app? ie: if I dont want motion notification or pet notification but someone else does, can it be done? thanks
I don't see how any other doorbells even exist that are single camera. The Eufy dual camera doorbell changed the game and I can't even imagine being with a single camera doorbell at this point. Why aren't more companies doing dual camera???
I'm subscribed to this RUclips channel and I greatly enjoy all an each of the camera reviews here, but there's something I would like to share with everyone. I installed in my house 8 Ring Cameras (one of them is a Doorbell Pro 2), 3 Eufy, 1 Kuna and 1 Reolink Argus 4 Pro. I can tell you without a doubt that the Ring cameras are superior in clarity, color and reliability compared to all the other ones. Yes, I know, Ring did not catch up with the advance in technology as all the other brands, and they also charge you an annual fee to make them work properly, which is a bummer. But specially the Ring Floodlight pro has a definition, color, reliability and angle of vision unmatched by all the other brands. I got really disappointed with the Argus 4 Pro. It is supposed to be 4 K and wide angle but the image resolution, color, and vertical angle of view is not as good as the old 1080p Ring. This is just my opinion. Thank you!!! 🙏🙏🙏
@@LifeHackster hopefully you can test it and let us know. Not just this, but other products that record 24/7. With this becoming more of an issue in places, it's of interest....
I don't understand why these companies have cut out the ability to trigger the home’s manual chime. The technology to do so was available in the original Ring doorbell.
Correct but this one can or will be compatible with the Tapo hub and when added, you will also have the recordings on the hub. Or..subscribe to their Tapo Care to also have cloud recordings.
Short answer, No. If you have a PoE splitter for USB-C, and the plug is angled that you can plug it in on the back of the doorbell..probably, but it is too much hassle that it is not worth it.
How does this compare to the eufy doorbell that you have installed? Unfortunately, TP-link is a Chinese company, currently, their routers are being investigated by the US gov for stealing the data of American citizens, which throws up red flags and cautions me about buying their products. Are the servers that run the cloud storage option located in China? If so, that’s a huge security risk
Eufy is a Chinese brand also. If you are concerned about data stealing or your video footage being sold and watched in the dark web (I'm not sure who is going to buy your footage anyways), you probably need a wired NVR system that is not connected to your router. Just a note, you browsing here in RUclips and making a comment has fed the RUclips algorithm and now has a data set for you that they can share (sell) to their advertisers.
I’m worried about anything connected to the Chinese government that can potentially breech the security of our nation and every American should be too. What country are you located?

Does this work with some existing Tapo hub? For linking as chime and recording storage. Like the one comes with the battery camera bundle? I'm a bit concerned about the memory card in the doorbell itself. The other (d210) has even worse placement for the card.
did you test how it works in power outage is there pre-roll or is that the same as battery mode?
Thank you for your review sir.Any recommendation for solar camera that records 24 hrs with a SD card please thanks in advance
Not that I know of. Anything Battery or Solar will only record motion events. I think Reolink has one though Reolink trackmix LTE plus but it is expensive and big.
@@LifeHacksterthank you very much for your feedback Sir. God bless you.
Is your discount for the Tapo website only?
question. can different users setup different notifications on their tapo app? ie: if I dont want motion notification or pet notification but someone else does, can it be done? thanks
Will tapo d225 integrate with home assistant?
Does anyone know the delay between a chime and a button being pushed on a doorbell
Compare it to eufy 🙏
Yes!👆
Most likely.
@@LifeHacksterhow bout Reolink?
When hardwired, does it have any RTSP settings?
I didn't see any RTSP settings in the spec sheet.
Ok thanks!
I don't see how any other doorbells even exist that are single camera. The Eufy dual camera doorbell changed the game and I can't even imagine being with a single camera doorbell at this point. Why aren't more companies doing dual camera???
Watch my eufy dual camera video and compare the footages.. I’m pretty sure you can see more of my front porch with the Tapo than the eufy.
I had read that there is one that has the rtsp protocol, does this one have it?
I don’t see any RTSP in the specs.
Does anyone know if Tapo plans on making a NVR?
They have a Hub...but NVR would be nice.
Nice review, I think Tapo is doing an excellent job with their cameras and smart devices. Will this doorbell still record if a wifi jammer is used?
It should be because of the SD card recording. You will just not get notified.
@@LifeHackster hopefully you can test it and let us know. Not just this, but other products that record 24/7. With this becoming more of an issue in places, it's of interest....
5:15 my old chime box will no longer work then?
So what happens after 20:04 hours?Does it just dump the footage
It loop records. It will record over old footage.
Will it work with google nest hubs as chimes?
I don't understand why these companies have cut out the ability to trigger the home’s manual chime. The technology to do so was available in the original Ring doorbell.
Additional expense of manufacturing and adding a chime kit.
Does this work with HomeKit ?
How come it said a pre recorded message when you answered it?
I have the auto response turned ON. You will see it in the settings part of the video.
not available in canada yet
Hopefully, soon.
When will you review the Reolink RLC 823S1 and RLC 823S2?
So if someone doesn't want to be recorded they can just steal the unit and take out the SD card?
Correct but this one can or will be compatible with the Tapo hub and when added, you will also have the recordings on the hub. Or..subscribe to their Tapo Care to also have cloud recordings.
Can you power this and keep it charged using POE?
Short answer, No. If you have a PoE splitter for USB-C, and the plug is angled that you can plug it in on the back of the doorbell..probably, but it is too much hassle that it is not worth it.
Do they also have a POE version ?
Not that I know of.
Does this support RTSP?
I didn't see it in the specs.
@@wilty5 Zoom out just for a second and tell me what data you have in your security cameras that if other countries know will breach our security? Unless you work for the US government and handles and knows confidential info then you are just a regular Joe or Jane …
How does this compare to the reolink?
I have to compare it.
Can you make two phones rings when someone press this doorbell?
If you have shared the account then yes, but most likely the first one that answers will connect but the second one, will not.
Did you try the D235 yet
Nope. I haven't.
These is NO RTSP stream even when hardwired. 😢 This is a must to bring it into HomeKit. I really thought this was going to be the one. Maybe a firmware update will be released. I’ll buy it again then.
Noooooo that's such a shame as that was one of the main features I want like their other cameras
@@robthomas7232 I ordered the Tapo D130. Looks to have the same specs with no battery. Improves to 30fps, ONVIF RTSP and smaller. Must be hardwired. Looks like this could be a winner.
Which one better tapo D225 or D230
I haven't tested the D230
I LOVE WINNING WITH RING DOORBELL.
I see their specs, video compression is only H264… How’s the downloaded file size like for a 2-minute video recording…?
A 1 minute video is 5.7MB
@@LifeHackster Wow…! Isn’t that a lot of compression…? Eufy’s 1-min HEVC clip from their SoloCams already averages 12MB, and that’s only at 15fps.
According to Tapo:
D225 is 2K 4MP at 2304 x 1728
D235 and TD25 is 2K 5MP at 2560 x 1920
I guess they are wrong because all my footages on the D225 are 2560x1920.
@@LifeHackster Wow you’re right. I just bought this D225 and set it up. I recorded a clip to my iPhone camera roll and the video dimensions are 2560 x 1920. Even on the D225 box and app settings it says 2304 x 1728. Now I don’t understand the differences between D225, TD25 and D235.
Looks easy to steal though.
A lot of doorbells have these pin method of removal like Eufy, Arlo and Nest. I did make a short video to make this a little bit more secure. -> ruclips.net/user/shortsKhnjuyfePwY
Memory card on the doorbell itself is a major security flaw as it can easily be stolen or destoyed
@@jampam-jf8mt You can also connect it to the Tapo Hub (H200 when it becomes compatible with it) which has storage in the hub itself and inside your house...or subscribe to their Tapo Care subscription so as to have recordings to the cloud also.
@@LifeHacksterso does that mean I don't have to insert a SD card inside the doorbell? Will the H200 hub be enough to store the videos (without subscription) locally? I read that the hub is not currently supported for this doorbell version. Let me know please. Thanks for your videos and reviews.
Why can't it look better 🤣
No HomeKit compatibility has sucks
Reolink should copy some of these features.
My anti theft alarm doesn't have a guy saying to put the bell back, it's just the siren
Now THAT is one UGLY doorbell. But, it has all the features I want with the exception of working with existing chimes.
LOL... Hoping they can add a chime adapter to make it work with existing chimes.
Disappointingly, it doesn’t come with an SD storage card, so you have to add that to the price if you don’t subscribe to cloud storage.
SD cards aren't that expensive, and I'm sure any other doorbell/cameras that include SD card are not giving you them for free and are included in the price, so you are paying for the SD card either way.
Still think Auso is the best bang for your buck
Not a good idea with the SD card inside the doorbell, doorbell gets nicked and you lose all your footage
They offer cloud recording with subscription too.
@@LifeHackster that’s better, I really wouldn’t like the idea of Recordings only on the device so if it did go missing you have absolutely no footage so i am glad it offer a cloud subscription
We have Tapo Cameras everywhere for security, just not the Tapo doorbell
Thank for you your reply
