  • M*A*S*H is one of the most beloved sitcoms of all time, with a huge following that still watches the reruns on a daily basis. The show had some scenes filmed in Malibu Creek State Park and it has become an unofficial pilgrimage for fans of the show to hike to. When you get to the site you can see photos that show what the area looked like when it was used for filming, as well as some fun artifacts like an old medical truck and the famous M*A*S*H sign showing the distance to the different characters' homes.

Hey Josh and hi everyone: I'm the long-time volunteer manager of the M*A*S*H site for Malibu Creek State Park. I designed the information panels, donated the long shade struicture and arranged for the restoration of the new ambulance. To answer Josh's question - the un-restored ambulance and Jeep at the set appeared on the show 40+ years ago and were badly burned in a 1982 wildfire that destroyed the outdoor set. The fire came through as the final episode was being filmed and because their outside set was now decimated, the fire was written in to the storyline of the last episode. 20th Century Fox left those vehicles behind to mark the set. Thanks to Josh for great content!

I worked at the Renaissance Pleasure Faire across the road at Paramount Ranch in the early 80’s. Snuck onto the MASH site in 1981. Best memories. I still tear up when I see the opening credits for MASH with the choppers flying over the mountains. Ahhhh…nostalgia 🥰

I was there about 30 years ago and there was an old Rusty Jeep there even back then. They keep changing things at that Park quite a bit. Just a few years ago you used to be able to walk on the dam and even climb down the ladder to the lower section. And now it's all blocked off. And you never used to see deer there. But now there's a bunch of deer every time I go and they even saw a bear there a couple years ago.

There is a sign just past the mess tent that says "Helipad" and a short hike up the hill for the best view of the site -- this video includes this view. When I was there in November you could tell that someone has spelled "GOODBYE" just like shown during the last scene of the last episode but with small stones. Would be great if someone put larger, white painted stones to recreate that image. Said a prayer up there to all who were lost or wounded, to those who did their best to help them, and to all those who suffered having someone they loved injured or killed. My son served in Korea as a medevac pilot, so even more meaningful.

I'm happy to see that it still looks good post fire. Also, the truck as you enter looks like it has been repainted since I made it there, so many thanks to those responsible for that! As I understand it, the remains of the other vehicles were actually left there from the original filming from the final episode. During that episode, there was an actual forest fire that they incorporated into the final episode. Also, is Century Lake an original film location for Planet of the Apes? I also made it to Paramount Ranch, that is nearby, but from what I hear, not much is left of that old western town post fire. I may never get to make that hike again (we shall see), but thank you again for sharing this so others can enjoy this hike and thank you for the great videos that you post!

    • @Nagranddan
      @Nagranddan 3 года назад

it's a long drought but also a combination of how fast things grow once there is ANY rain. It rains, it'll turn green, sprout like crazy, and then dry out like you see here. Problem is, this turns into fast-growing tinder for the next fire. I can tell you it is getting worse though, I grew up around SoCAl and there used to be more rain around fall-winter. Now we're lucky to get even a few days of rain that isn't just a few minutes of drizzle.

Watch Mash every chance I get online love the series.
Now why did they pick that location is their a certain reason ?
I wonder if the actors traveled to the site every day or stayed on site ?
    Thanks

Not much there to see. Would have loved to have been there during the filming of the show all those years ago.

Love That Show and visiting the set is on my bucket list. But being disabled if they still don’t have the road in open I’m afraid it’s a no go.
If memory serves correctly those old trashed vehicles are actual ones from the show that we’re lost to the fire that burned down the set during filming of the last few episodes. Did you walk up to the helicopter pad where the Goodbye was spelled out with rocks in the final scene?

Am hoping you can add it back to your bucket list by coming from the direction of the Reagan Ranch and parking in the community there... a much shorter trek and should be easier for the disabled.

that Reagan Ranch sign... is that related to Reagan? have you been to Reagan and Nixon library? Reagan' library was real cool, haven't been to Nixon yet need to read up on watergate before i head on over, even though it is literally 20 mins from me.

Yea it is, not sure there is much left though www.conejovalleyguide.com/dosomethingblog/reagan-ranch-at-malibu-creek-state-park - Yep, I have been to the Reagan library, it is pretty amazing. Not the Nixon one though.

From what I recall Reagan used to have a ranch around there. I think Bob Hope owned land there too.

Recall that it never snowed on M*A*S*H (unlike in Korea). Now we know why.
