Vocal cord closure is described in many ways. From using words like vocal fold compression, closure and adduction; this video will dispel some of the myths around what vocal cord closure is, what it does, and why it offers us more options for expression when we learn to exercise it.
Thank you for watching! If you have questions, consider joining me at my weekly live event, held every Saturday at 6pm London time!
All the best,
Jeff
I'm very airy!!! Thank you for this!!!!!
just subscribed! this is actually what has been happening to me. thanks for the advice !
Excellent explanation. Thank you!
Hi Jeff, just wanted to ask if you could explain or make a video if you have the time on how to look after your vocal chords? What foods/drinks benefit/damage the vocal chords and if smoking/drinking damages them and how? Etc.
Thank you, love your videos.
Great video; helpful and well explained. You've got a new subscriber!
You're so good, best video I've seen on vocal chords closure, this has been my biggest challenge in singing.
Thank you so much! I appreciate it!
Jeff
Wow you're very great and it's free lesson. I just figured out why i can do scale into mix voice easily, but when i sing with vowel and consonant i'm going to falsetto or reinforced falsetto. The problem is, i was unconciusly loosing my vocal cord closure when sing into the mix and head. Before watch this i think it caused by my throat closed, but thats not the real problem. Focused to vocal cord closure solved my problem. Thanks 😎
Thank you! Been waiting for this for a long time
You're welcome!
Best,
Jeff
thanks! I was hurting my voice using only vocal closure
amazingly helpful once again!
Thanks!
Jeff
Great explanation
You deserve so much more subscribers! I love your calm and crystal clear way of explaining things. Kudos from Slovenia!

Thanks for this. I just realized that the passagio needs to be access and strengthened with 'you' sound. I always have done it via 'ah' and 'weee' sound. I was asking my self why I feel so strained after. You hide it well in your exercise I only felt little effort. After about 4-6 months of practicing your Tenor and Alto Exercises I was able to gain back my C5 and I was able to lossen the transition from F4 to B4....
However does the head tone really have to be soft in resonance? I want it to have a strong solid bite but i tend to crack? Does that mean my adduction is not that good on the areas above the G4 note?
Regards,
Angel
Soft doesn’t necessarily mean airy or breathy. You can still have a focused, piercing sound in your head voice. You may be straining to achieve the power, you might try Estill head and neck anchoring: which is to hold a belt behind your head and press the back of your head back into it as you sing. This changes the velocity of where we’re sending our effort- most people lengthen their neck to hit high notes- when we press the back of our heads into the belt (held in each of our hands) this changes the pathway of effort. I studied for 25 years with master teachers and until Estill I didn’t realize I was straining that way because it can be very subtle and still wrong. Research Estill voice method, wouldn’t hurt to give it a try.
Your video is awesome but i need to know something
My voice suddenly turned airy and raspy and it became harder to reach the high notes and after a laryngoscope the doctor told me that there is a problem in the vocal cords closure and it doesn't close completely while singing.
Is it useful to do what you are explaining here !?
Thanks
cristal clear! thanks
Thank you Sir
Most welcome!
I feel a sensation at B3 and break at D4. I think I am a low Baritone.
Where, approximately, would my primary and secondary passagio be? Also where would the mixed voice notes be?
If you suspect that you're a low baritone then that's about right for the locations of the primo and secondo passaggios. Primo is probably a bit lower (it's easy to sing past it without noticing it) if you're sure the secondo passaggio is at D4.
Mix voice depends on your school of thought in the matter. In my discipline, the 'mix voice' is the zona di passaggio which is the space between primo and secondo passaggios.
Best,
Jeff
That's a great lesson, Jeff!
Does that apply to Bass-Baritones?
Absolutely.
Jeff
I have adduction gap please suggest me a therapy ? is adduction gap and closure opposit?
THANK YOU!
You're welcome! Thanks for watching!
Jeff
What exercises of yours EXACTLY were your advising us to us, pls? Where can I find them? I just looked through your videos and you have so many ! Wow
In essence, just about all my videos are about this to one degree or another. Vocal fold adduction isn't a skill separate from good phonation, but is meant to be worked into our daily practices. If you're struggling with it, consider reviewing some of the exercises in this playlist:

Hi Mr. Jeff,
Can you create a video with exercises of this sort? Pretty please and merci beaucoup.
Blessings and high favour,
H
Absolutely! Thanks for watching!
Best,
Jeff
Hi Jeff, I have a question, I'm a baritone but opposite to what you said, whenever I sing anywhere below C3 my voice starts to become super breathy and weak and my throat also hurts a bit. Can I fix it using the same exercises?
Yes, the short tonal onset exercises are about developing balance between the vocal fold's engagement and airflow. From your description it sounds as if you're really pushing down on the larynx. Watch your throat in a mirror while you're practicing and try to allow the larynx to remain in a neutral position. Similar to when you are at rest, not singing and in between breaths.
Thanks for watching!
Jeff
Thanks! I literally can't find any source that talks about breathy voice in low register, this really helps a lot.
Excellent! Let me know how you progress.
All the best,
Jeff
Could you please explain voice modulation. Thank you.
Awesome question! I'll have a think and do something!
Best!
Jeff
So from what I've known, cords closure means more powerful mix. Without it, mix voice sounds weak and thin. However, many people sing with airy mix voice but still sound very full and chesty. Can you help me explain this? Thanks a lot.
If they're using a microphone when you hear them sing, in other words, you are not physically standing in front of them in the same room when they sing, then all bets are off. You can do nearly anything in post production.
Best,
Jeff
I have natural breathy voice. I talk and sing in breathy voice. Will this exercise help me in talking voice too? Thank you
It may take some practice, but that's the idea! Best of luck!
Jeff
Hi Jeff, I have a question. Sometimes my voice sounds kinda crackly when I sing higher, is this a result of poor vocal cord closure?
Great question! You just missed Community Questions 37, but I'll answer this in Community Questions 38!
Thank you!
Jeff
ls glottal attack and vocal cord closure closely related ?
Not entirely. The glottal attack is the epiglotis closing over the airway. When it opens rapidly you get a pop. Many vocalists unwittingly substitute that sound for actual productive adduction (closure).
@@JeffRolka ok and thank you so much for the lessons ...you ve become a part of my everyday life , listening to your voice , seeing you on video and following and doing your lessons and excercises ....
how long of doing these excercises should I expect my airy singing to go away?
That depends quite a lot on how you do the exercises and how much you focus on that in your singing when away from these exercises. I hope that helps!
Jeff
2:40 - this seems to be more of a female singer issue or high tenor+ male singers. Most male singers struggle with not letting the strength of the chest voice go leading to limited or strained range. As a male low baritone, I'm very discouraged by producers (and in general) who force me to sing in higher keys and I come off strained or completely airy when thinking about it too much.
Here to learn fry scream
Great video👍
Thanks for visiting
I LOVE YOU, BILLY EICHNER!
Jeff! I’m subscribed but I want to go to your website! Link please!
My head completely understands adduction - my cricothyroid muscles not so much!

Thx for replying Jeff. My breathy wobbly chords are starting to adduct in head voice now!
👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍
Thank you!
Jeff
Vocal cord needs chest voice to strong vocal cords?
Yes, in a manner of speaking but it's more about balance of energy between the vocal folds and sub-glottic air pressure.
You remind me of a younger, slimmer version of the actor John C Reilly who sang in Chicago (the film).
Thanks for that!
My voice sounds like it always in a vocal fry what should I do
Evaluate the balance of sub-glottic air pressure and vocal fold engagement. Start with short syllables in this playlist:

I hope that helps!
Jeff
I’m a high soprano, and in my chest voice and middle voice there’s something like an air leak going. It’s not like I’m singing breathy, it’s just like air is leaking and you can hear that noise. This doesn’t happen when I sing in high mixed voice or head voice. Would these exercises help me “eliminate” this air leak? Or that’s a separate problem?
Hello and thanks for watching! Possibly - I'd have to hear exactly what's happening to make that determination. Getting more efficient vocal fold engagement is always a good place to start though!
Best,
Jeff
@@JeffRolka thanks!
I still don't know what it should sound or feel like :S
Look for the beginner playlist and then the video on vocal closure :)
TLDW 3:20 search for his beginner videos. That's it.

Hard to say. This is a video about vocal fold closure, but you would have to ask your doctor more about the specifics of why they might not be closing.
Best,
Jeff
