- Okay, I debated about whether to do a video solely on him, but I always liked him as a player and he was always a solid two way forward for the Dallas Stars.

I come back to this Hockey Guy video quite often, it's by far my favourite by his. Great tribute to my favourite Finnish ice hockey player.
Same here and here I am - Again. Got a mutual friend with Jere and got a chance to spend a day with him in this guys bachelor party some 20 plus years ago. We played Finnish baseball, went to sauna etc. Truly nice gentleman.
So happy I was able to attend the ceremony and game last night. It was amazing.They gave everyone a small Jere Lehtinen retirement banner.Jere was so underrated and I always enjoyed watching him.Jere "Mr. Fix It" Lehtinen forever!

Had the great honor of meeting Jere and his family a couple of years ago at work while they vacationed at our resort. He was surprised I knew who he was but we spent more time talking about the Cowboys since that is my team too. Can’t begin to say how respectful he, his wife and kids were. An honor and a thrill!

Thank you for those nice words, Jere Lehtinen deserves all, that guy is pure class ! That line of him together with Saku Koivu and Ville Peltonen will always be remembered here in cold Finland, and I think it was Jere Lehtinen who gave a pass to that Brett Hull SC goal.
I have heard a great hockey minds said about Lehtinen, that if you want to show to juniors how to play in different situations, just show them Jere Lehtinen playing in regular game. He did always right play on right time and most scary is that he did it in every game. Just a class A team player who's game was polished to top.
My favourite Lehtinen story was when a former finnish NHL-correspondant Vesa Rantanen was interviewing Modano way back when.
He asked Mike about Lehtinen and Modano started with the hockey jargon about what a great team guy Jere is and so forth. Then, all of a sudden Modano stopped talking, just stared at the journalist for few seconds and said "Fuck it, if we had a team filled with Jere Lehtinen we'd win the Cup every year."
Also when it comes to Jere staying a Dallas Star through-out his career. There was a time nearing the tail-end of his career when the Dallas management told him that they were ready to move him. Jere opted to stay and the Stars organisation respected that decision.
It's funny, a lot of finnish players from that "era" take great pride in representing the teams that made their NHL-careers possible as long as possible. Teppo Numminen in particular was shattered when the Jets moved to Arizona. A welcome change for a lot of people I'm sure but Teppo felt he had let the people of Winnipeg down. Even Kimmo Timonen, a beloved Flyer, has said that for a long time he felt that he wanted to end his career as a Nashville player and the trade robbed him of that. Oh well, at least Timonen got his reward in the end.

hitchcock himself said he never had to coach lehtinen, that he was a complete player. also dallas should bring back those jerseys, the rebrand looks too damn cartoony and its missing that GOLD.

My favourite line of all time. That 2006 Olympic run is etched into my memory. They were utterly dominant and it's notable how old they were. Veteran savvy, defence and high end offence. Never been as excited about an Olympics or any NHL playoffs run for that matter.
@@Pahis1 It was Summanen - Koivu - Lehtinen first at TPS when TPS won the championship in 1995, then Summanen was replaced by Peltonen in the national team in the same spring(though Summanen was with the team, but in a different line) and the line dominated and Finland won it's first World Championship. Later the line was transformed and Peltonen was replaced by Selänne and Lehtinen moved to the left wing as Selänne played on the right. The Lehtinen - Koivu - Selänne was a dominant line in the 1998 olympics and the 2006 olympics. Had the perfect all-around game and deadly scoring capability.

Was hoping you'd make a video on this. Man is a legend here and seeing people act like his retirement was undeserved (Hockey Central @ Noon 🙄) just speaks to how underrated he was.

In my mind he was the best finnish player in NHL. And exactly for the reasons this great video pointed out.
He was the perfect hockey player. Hardly took penalties. Very responsible in ALL areas of the ice. If he wanted to he could have scored more goals. He just thought it was more important defensively
Aleksander Barkov is so much like him. Responsible defensively, fantastic forward, native to Finland, and a gentleman on and off the ice.
Jere was always very solid player. Humble and always played for the team and for team mates.

When I a documentary of Jere Lehtinen I felt sooo proud of being a Finn!
Former coach said if one of the four lines had problems he just places Jere in that line and the line was fixed! And all former star teammates had only great things to say about him!!
He was the class act of all class acts!!
And on top of all this, he drove a Passat. Talk about a low-key superstar.
Class act. Did he accept reduced salary to stay in Dallas, and if so, was it a lot?
That's one thing I've pondered; why change team for couple years and for couple extra mils maybe, when you could reach "immortality" via staying faithful to that single jersey? I'd like to think that if decicion was given to me to go hunt for the cup for the last year(s) of my career, or taking risk of never winning it and staying in team I've always played for, even with reduced salary, I'd choose staying every single time.
But then, maybe it's not always for the player to decide.

He was great!
Jere certainly had no problem with footspeed. To maintain textbook perfect defenisive positioning, which he did and three Selke's atest to that fact, one must possess ample footspeed. It was a pleasure to watch his career.
He and Joe Sakic were my absolute favourite players growing up.

Regarding the Star jersey, the explanation given to us was that they couldn't do that design on the new-style jerseys after the lockout. The disaster that was the Mooterus was still fresh on everyone's minds, thus the plain black & white DALLAS jerseys were born. The desire to bring the old Star design back in some way is pretty much unanimous among Stars fans.
Ken Hitchcock once said that if he had an entire team of Jere Lehtinens, he could win the Cup every year. Watching Lehtinen's play, it was not hard to see why.

It's a shame the Hall of fame won't recognize great defensive players like him and Carboneau anymore, they could also score and both have 3x Selke's.

He was also such a great team player. He never chafed at being overshadowed by the bigger names Dallas had. Nothing but respect for that guy. Personally though, I liked the first white jerseys they had better than those.

But he signed a one day contract. To my knowledge you don’t have to have a player contract to become a member of staff on a team. Forgive me I am European but are they’re any other reasons he would sign a one day contract to go back to Carolina?

Everybody always forgot say about 2004 World cup. Finland was that tournament very strong even thought they had bad Olympics (2002). They had that time coach Summanen who is very temperature guy who got even few players angry (Janne Niinimaa left tournament at begining, dont know true story but he and Aki Berg have been overrated defensive players that era). Attitude probably was so bad and still they near won Canada. Canada got Lemieux, Sakic etc. After tournament coach Summanen got fired (I think he was only one year, max 2). New coach Westerlund we know better story.

UltimateBreloom you’re reacting like being called a role player is bad, it’s not. They do things that don’t necessarily show up on the statistics. There’s tons of guys that are role players, not stars. Does that mean only stars get recognized? To me the answer is no. That’s why you see a lot of them getting their number retired, maybe get in the local team hall, but not get into the NHL HOF.
