- Many Muslims in the U.S. Air Force hide their faith to avoid harassment. Because of the secrecy, the majority of openly-practicing Muslims are actually converts-people who enter the military as one faith and then switch to Islam. Muslim converts like Lillian Harbor are often ostracized by friends and family who don’t support their decision. This makes the process of transitioning to Islam on a military base all the more isolating.

That was quite a moment. I am glad that it has worked out. It is so important. I am Eastern Rite Independent Sacramental church and although she was from a more fundamentalist Lutheran group and though she never converted, she was very supportive of me. I'm so glad to see this young lady and her mum's relationship.

@Marco Grewe I assume your referring to the following verse. “Until, when he reached the setting place of the sun, he found it setting in a spring of black muddy (or hot) water” [al-Kahf 18:86] . Allah said “he found it setting” and He did not say “it was setting in a spring of black muddy (or hot) water.” The wording of this verse clearly shows Allah is depicting the scene that appeared in front of the person (Dhul Qarnayn) from the persons perspective.

You refer to Islam as a "copy" of previous abrahamic faiths but you would not be saying that if you knew of the Islamic narrative in which there were many prophets and messengers sent to many civilisations throughout history. All these messengers preached the same thing. They preached Islam. Much of the preaching of these messengers has been corrupted and changed so Muhammad pbuh was sent to reveal a final revelation for the rest of time. This final revelation is the Quran and it has not been corrupted or changed and it never will be.
If you actually studied the Quran with tafsir, then asked informed questions about Islam then that's good, however many people just decide to argue from ignorance.
Also there is no such thing as sheol in Islam. However there is an afterlife but just because there is an afterlife does not mean it is the same as sheol.

The military has always been decades out of touch with society. I was in Iraq in 2007 and has no idea what Ramadan was, all my superiors told us about it was that it's important to the locals and they're going to act a little crazy. Children used to also come to our convoys asking for water, but people stopped giving them water because "they waste it cleaning themselves after going to the bathroom." Seriously? As a Muslim now, I look back on the time I spent in the military with embarrassment for our country and appreciation for Allah guiding me to Islam.
My step daughter has been in JROTC for the last 5 years, she wanted to join the Army and I supported that decision until I started reaching out for information about Muslims in the military and discovered how backwards everything is. I was incapable of finding a Muslim Chaplin, I had to speak to a Christian Chaplin who was nice enough to research and answer my questions.
Being a Muslim in the military is basically impossible, especially the lower your rank is. I've seen news about Sikhs wearing their turbans in the military but those were officers, not soldiers. Even as a male in the military it's impossible to properly practice Islam, not because of a conflict with Islam and military values, but because of a conflict with military culture and the constitution. The military will accept any religious practice so long as it completely revolves around salt operations, which means even in a non combat situation like being stationed stateside or especially basic training you can't pray when you need to.
That's not even getting into the bigotry or concerns that an American soldier that practices Islam has a president openly hostile to their faith like Trump giving them orders. I served under Bush Jr. and I feel like Muslims would have been treated fairer under his command than Trump's. I saw how homosexual soldiers were treated during my time of service, I can't begin to imagine how a Muslim would be treated currently.
I wouldn't be surprised to see a Muslim discharged from the military as a failure to adapt because their religious practice didn't conform to military expectations. I'm probably exaggerating, but I saw a black friend of mine nearly discharged for cocaine use because some self important first sergeant lost his son in a drug related gang shooting and was quick to retaliate against anyone possible; the friend was using an herbal weight loss tea to drop weight to pass his physical training test and the tea shows up positive as cocaine which it's not, he had to drop his own money on a drug test to prove he wasn't using cocaine. The first sergeant never apologized to him for accusing him of killing his son.
I left the military in 2011 because of how dishonorable it had become, I accepted Islam in 2017 because of how honorable it has always been. I only wish Islam had found me sooner.

When I was young I really wanted to join the Airforce. I converted to Islam at 17. I realised that it would be morally incompatible with dropping bombs on people. May Allah help them to bridge that gap and stay in the faith.

When i travelled to Europe, people ask me to removed my hijab. I mean I was scared, with all the news about hate crimes towards muslims, but I was more scared to removed my hijab, for me to removed it, is that start of my downfall. So I did not. And Alhamdulillah, I’m ok. That’s just me, I don’t judge sisters that do not wear hijab. I did not wear hijab before. So I understand.

I’m not a convert but I can relate to this video as being in USAF and everyday walking out of my dorm and sometime feeling that scorch of hate from other military personnel who couldn’t stand seeing a Muslim in a uniform. Either way, I wore that uniform with pride and wore faith with pride.

I have observed particularly that reciting Durud while driving my car has amazing and unbelieveable results.
