    Probobly the best freestyle swimmer i've seen. I would put him right behind Michael Phelps and Mark Spitz on the all time best swimmer list.

    Doesn't matter if torpedo isn't doing the perfect technique, textbook or whatever.........the guys a natural i.e. a one off. It suits him the way he swims obviously! Same as bolt at running, messi at football, the stig at driving! Blessed with a talent

    good lord ian swims so beautifully and naturally. he's like a black mamba snake slithering through the water.

    wish ian didnt retire. i think the duel in the pool in 2007 with america and the aussies would have been wayyyyyyyy better if ian and micheal would have fought it out in the 200. god that would have been a good race

    I understand, thanks! in fact I started practising since I got pregnant (because it is the only sport, and walking) that I can do (I normally do Karate and footing) So I think that I have to continue breathing every 3 and improve step by step my swimming! thanks you!

    actually that´s really good!

    I think the reason it looks like that is because he swims a sort of catch up style freestyle stroke. I go in between really fast and really slow.

    if you train to breath every 3,eventually you gonna swim a lot faster but it takes time to train like that =)

    If you want to see a super aesthetically pleasing swimmer search "Total immersion coach demo" here. He's magnificent.

    It's not so uncommon, but it's true that Thorpe used to have one the biggest bow waves, which is the name of that kind of frontal wave.
    I think the wave here is particularly so big not beacuse he looks forwards but because Thorpe himself was huge and very heavy for his height. He moved a tremendous mass of water.
    One of the most attractive features I found in the underwater videos of Thorpe are that huge waves he makes. They are truly impressive.

    breathe every 2...the baby needs oxygen"! :)

    I was just at a site that said "never breathe every stoke" and all the pro's breathe every stroke, except for short sprints. I'll continue to do what the pro's do even if it's "wrong". ;-)

    Do you mean "he enters his hands in the water too soon"?
    Well, if that what you ask, yes, it's true, but note how far he extends his arms after the hand entry, reaching out forward not downward.

    i train swimming 5 years also i am not profesional
    my coach always force me to breath every 3
    he said that , that way is harder but that way you will spread your lungs more
    first it was very hard but now i always breath on every 3 , when i get very very tired or when i am without air than i breath every 2
    Ian Thorpe has lungs twice bigger than i , so he probably doesnt need to breath at all LOL ;)

  • @zombajn1
    @zombajn1 16 лет назад

    yeah than he will turn his head on both sides ( left and right) to get some air
    yeah it is harder because he is withouth air longer than when he turn on one side like he did in this vid =)

    Is it just my computer or does anyone else NOT hear the sound on this video?

  • @Darickful
    @Darickful 12 лет назад

    Water does NOT enter his mouth that way because of Bernoulli's Venturi principle. The water stream at that pressure tends to flow away from the trailing end of the camber. Good swimmers learn to be fluid mechanics technician;-)

    Is this guy using flippers? or is this just with his body ... cause he's about to take off out of water and go into flight mode.

    when do you exhale

  • @adamroflll
    @adamroflll 11 лет назад

  • @connaghananthony
    @connaghananthony 13 лет назад

    How come he starts by breathing from the left but in the end hes breathing out the right side?

  • @makikoba
    @makikoba 16 лет назад

    I breath every 3, but I am always very tired...is it better breathing every 1 like him? or do I just to enhace my performance? (I am not a professional swimmer!)

  • @ZacharyHelm
    @ZacharyHelm 16 лет назад

    Is he breathing out his mouth or his nose? When he comes up I can see a part of his mouth letting in water so it looks like he breathes out through his mouth. just wondering though.

  • @HotFiya05
    @HotFiya05 14 лет назад

    @nodgie1 Yea you're crazy cause to me it looks like he's breathing on the pushing side as normal.

  • @MaestroSacarias
    @MaestroSacarias  13 лет назад

    @connaghananthony Well, I suppose that the real Ian Thorpe was abducted by aliens in the middle of the filmation, and then was replaced by a copy, which differs from the real Ian Thorpe in the prefered breathing side.

  • @KingColliwog

    Phelps breath every two but hey, who cares.
