Are You Getting Ripped Off Every Time You Buy a Gold Buffalo?

- If you know me you know I buy gold, I do buy silver but the bulk of my stack and of my collections is gold by far. But that isn’t important. I do want to discuss: Why do we pay more for the same $50 coin? Both the AGE and the American Gold Buffalo have 1 full ounce of gold but look at this the Buffalo cost $10 more!!! Am I getting ripped off every time I buy a Gold Buffalo?

Buffs all the way!!! Worth the small extra. I love classics. And the Buff is that!
They are nice. Thanks
The Buffalo is pure .9999 Gold - Higher quality gold costs more
so is the maple leaf which cost way less
I have a gold 1oz Canadian cougar. It has a 200 dollar face value unlike other gold that have 50 dollar face value and boasts 99999 of gold purity. No other one has that that I know of.
Happy 4th of July! 🇺🇸
I don’t ever get ripped off on Gold Buffalos because I can’t afford to buy them! 😂 I’m strictly a fractional gold guy who’s probably getting ripped off on the smaller pieces. 🤷🏻♂️
Fractional is the best way to buy! Thanks.
not probably. you know in your heart that it is a rip-off for sure
@@DrSchor 😂So is driving an expensive convertible-which I do…and so is going to the doctor, which I don’t “Dr. Schor”! (Unless you’re one of those fake doctors with an academic grad degree or worse, an eye doctor!)
You do YOU, Schorry…😉👍
If you like the Buffalo better, then an extra ten bucks is worth it. If you like 24K but want to spend less on premium, get a Canadian Maple Leaf.
Excellent point! Thanks
@@silvertrek357 but chances are that you will get less for the Maple if you go to sell it, too. Buffalos command top dollar. Maybe because it doesn’t have that ugly King on the obverse. Lol
@@michaelrussell5736 i only look at thr reverse of Canadian coins!
i am trying to understand. why cant i get a Krugerrand instead of a CML? thanks for helping the new guys
@@DrSchor Krugerrands are part copper and you can see the color.
I love that 24k purity!
It does as a smooth golden gleam to it.
Yes we are not getting more for the silver and copper in the coin if you look at the metal’s. Now if you only want pure gold there is work required to get only pure gold. It’s up to the owner wants.
Gold is gold. Gold is real money. Everything else is credit. Believe that or don’t buy either. Every once you buy (gold or silver) is a vote for sound money and economic freedom. Vote as often as you can. Buy buy buy!!!
confusing. why say buy, buy, buy if you only want us to buy once. please explain.
@@DrSchor yeah sorry that was a typo. Should say every ounce you buy…🤪
Happy 4th C&C! And personally I love the US gold coins, but I think both are more expensive and not worth the round trip in purchases and sales compared to other gold pieces. Don’t get me wrong, love them….but I can’t justify the price difference in my mind. For US gold, the secondary Commemorative $5 & $10 gold coins are the best bang for my buck! Thanks for sharing! -PiFS 🐀
I agree they are pricey. I’m always concerned about buy back prices. Good points. Thanks.
USA USA USA USA USA
Love the buffaloes I just added a buffalo a $20 Saint gaudens and a $20 Liberty head to my stack this week. Doesn't matter what you buy as long as you buy.
Well said and congratulations on your pick ups.
Cash and Coins, I have come to the conclusion that it does not matter what gold coin you buy - as long as you keep in mind these important points. You buy the gold coin because it gives you pleasure, you buy it for the design, you buy it for how easily you can sell it - the liquidity. Price is important but it is not the most important thing.
Good point. Thank you.
fascinating. outside of it's design, what pleasure does a coin provide?
@@DrSchorOutside its design, a gold coin is not much different from another gold coin unless you look at its weight, purity, condition and lustre.
My LCS sells them for the same price.
I would have to say it goes back to supply and demand.
With the lower mintage on the Buffalo and the lack of options by weight they are more rare than the AGE causing the supply to be much lower.
Me personally I love the Buffalo but I’d take either of them over a lot of other options.
Happy Fourth of July, Mr. Cash 🇺🇸 🇺🇸
Happy 4th! They both are nice. Thanks.
Very well done video Cash! I'm a fan of the Buffalo- even with the 10 dollar premium over the ASE. To be honest, we only need one US gold coin, so if they just made the ASE 9999 pure, that would solve the issue, imo! I think 9999 is important for liquidity- Canada and there tax structure favors 9999 pure and pretty much all other mints now feature 9999 coins- Perth, RCM, RM and so on.
I totally agree. I don’t really understand why they don’t compete with the world. All Asian and European countries use 24k gold. Even PAMP is 24k. Thanks Silver Struck.
Did you say "to be honest" because without that declaration we can assume you are lying?
@DrSchor more that I like both the ase and the Buffalo but we don't really need two options
@@SilverStruck were you saying that honestly, or not? i can't tell
The American Gold Eagle coin has a 22 karat gold alloy composition of 91.67% gold + 5.33% copper + 3% silver to make it harder and more abrasion resistant. 22 karat gold alloy has a Vickers Hardness of 90HV. By comparison, 24 karat pure gold coins such as the American Gold Buffalo or the Canadian Gold Maple Leaf have a Vickers Hardness of 30HV. Therefore 22 karat gold alloy coins are three times harder and more durable from abrasions than 24 karat pure gold coins. In olden days when gold coins actually circulated in commerce, then a more abrasion resistant gold alloy coin was more practical for its durability than a much softer 24 karat pure gold coin. Nowadays for more value per cost, Canadian Gold Maple Leaf 24 karat pure gold coins cost a lower premium than American Gold Buffalo 24 karat pure gold coins.
Great information. I think the maple is an excellent option. Thanks
buffalo's are the same price as eagles at costco
Thanks! 😃
In my view the Buffalo is tops although softer than the Eagle. Just use plastic coin holders. No scratches or dents.
They are nice and worth the extra effort. Thanks.
1-ounce pure 24k is worth the premium price verses 91% in my opinion. Maples are a nice alternative too. Eagles just look too much like copper but if that's your coin of choice, buy what you like!
I like them both. Thank you. 😁
Great comparison between the two. I wonder if it's the cost of refining that contributes to the increase.
Good question. Yet would mixing it have an impact on production price? Curious. Thanks Sal. Happy 4th
of course it does. it is very expensive to go from .999 to .9999. that is the only reason it costs more.
It's all about the Money, I had the opportunity to purchase 2 1oz. Gold Buffalos last year, 1 for a birthday and the other for Christmas, but I had to plan a budget plan to get them, I do have 1/4oz and 1/0 oz Gold AGE's, and I would like to get 1oz AGE, but it's just too much moo-lah for me, so I do what I can with other purchases. THE SARGE
They are densely packed wealth. I don’t buy many. I do most of the 1/10th oz. Keep on stacking.
so did you buy the two buffalos, or what?
I only buy 22k coins they’re prettier and stronger. Only have 1/10 oz and pre 33.
I bought both and love both. If I had to choose between them, I’d choose to keep the buffalos, just based on the purity and overall looks. I keep them in capsules, so damaging them is not an issue. Also, the higher premium doesn’t matter to me when buying in small quantities.
I wish they were also fractional. They are nice coins
Buffalo all the way. It is gold in colour and gold in truth. The copper makes the Eagle look like jeweler's rose gold, which is not my preference. I also happen to like the Perth Mint 1 ounce cast gold "button" bar -- not fancy, cheaper than the Buffalo, and very sweet in design -- it looks like a 24 caret Chiclet.
I have seen them. They look great!
No ripoff with Buffs - Dealers often pay a higher (~1%) premium for Buffs over Eagles, which more than makes up for the higher original cost.
Is the total weight of an eagle coin a tad over an ounce then, since it contains a few percent of other additives? You mentioned that both coins contain one troy ounce of gold.
Yes. Both have one Troy ounce of gold. But the Eagle has copper and silver.
It's EASY, to figure out!!! ...the "eagle", is made of Gopper!!! At the HIGH PRICE, of a single oz. of gold, I don't want ANY COPPER!!
😅
i am a new stacker, trying to learn the lingo: what is gopper?
@DrSchor I'm simply combining gold, and copper, to equal gopper!! There's NO WAY, I want any copper, in my gold, at $2500/ oz. WELCOME, to the stacking community!!! Happy 😊 to have you with us!!
Fly like a Eagle!
😃
🎶To the Sea.....
I buy both. The premium on the Gold Buffalo is returned when / if you sell them. I like the design of the Buffalo better, but the reeded edges are cut poorly. The Series 1 AGEs are a better overall quality coin and I almost always receive a Series 1 if I buy a random date coin. I recently purchased a random date Buffalo from Bullion Exchanges for less than a random date AGE. I will be unboxing it on my channel tomorrow.
Cool
For $10 more I'd take buffalos all day 😁
It’s a great choice! Thanks
I prefer my gold maples 🍁 above all other gold coins that I have.
The maples are great! Excellent choice. Thanks
Hey Cash & Coins!
I like your channel but you make it sound like buffalos are rarer than eagles. To me when you mint in the hundreds of thousands I don’t consider that rare whether it’s buffalos or eagles.
Rare to me is 50 or less in mintage.
I do agree. I hope I stated rarer than the Eagles. But definitely not rare. Thanks. I appreciate your comment.
Eagles you get extra copper and silver but the buffalos looks so much nicer.
They kind of do. 😁
As I heard it said buy stuff you like but be smart about what you buy.
That an awesome title of a video Thanks
it has to be one or the other, it can't be both. which do you prefer
One reason that folks somehow think they're getting a "better" coin with the Buffalo is that it's rated at 24K gold--meaning that a Buffalo is 1.0 ounce of pure gold. What your average Joe still doesn't understand is that a gold Eagle **also** contains 1.0 ounce of pure 24K gold. The ONLY difference is that the Eagle contains **additional metal**--0.9 ounces of a silver/copper alloy that adds much greater durability to the coin--bringing its total weight to 1.09 ounces. (That's why it's 22K gold rather than 24K... even though it STILL CONTAINS 1.0 ounce of pure 24K gold.)
Another reason that many folks will pay more for the Buffalo is that it's rated at .9999 pure gold, as opposed to the Eagle at .999. Guess what? That's a marketing gimmick. The difference between .999 and .9999 is literally nine ten-thousandths. That's a statistical blip. In other words, the difference between .999 and .999 is virtually infinitesimal. But there's a sucker born every minute, so what can you do?
I really wish that the U.S. mint did a better job of educating people about what they're selling.
I buy a variety of gold but I stack more fractional gold than anything else. When I have the opportunity to buy pure 24k gold I buy it. Fractional gold to me has more appeal than any other size.
Fractional is on the top of my gold list.
how can fractional have more appeal to you, since , excepting 2008, no fractional gold is 24K, and you buy 24k gold at every opportunity. thanks for explaining to the new guys
Cash and Coins, I don't think you are getting ripped off .It depends on what you value - everything is in the eye of the beholder. When you buy the Gold Buffalo - you are paying for the design, the quality, the purity, and the low mintage maybe even the weight ( it's only available in 1 oz - let's forget 2008 when they made fractionals ). In contrast, when you buy the Eagle you are buying that coin to accumulate or stack gold the quickest fastest way- that's why it's available in fractionals too for those that cannot afford to buy the 1 oz. I guess I see the Buffalo made for the true gold collector, a once in a lifetime item and the Eagle as a more generic gold bullion coin for the stacker. You cannot go wrong buying both. If I could afford it, I would buy both.
Always great points. Thank you Sir.
best comment here. the gold buffalo is not meant to be bought by the riff raff.
when you sell back your buffalo it will demand a higher premium as well so your getting your premium cost right back so technically no your not getting ripped off
True. But definitely depends on who you sell it to. I’ve often seen The buy back is the same. Great point. Thanks
@@CashAndCoinsYT Nah, you won't get any additional premium. In fact, dealers almost never give you back *any* premium for gold or silver (even for eagles and buffalos). You'll be lucky to get spot. Go try to sell some right now if you don't believe me. Buy the cheapest gold and silver that you can find because it all sells for the same when you need to unload some of it.
@@byteme0000 every now and then I do sell. It’s why I’m always shopping around for a best deal.
never accept advice from a youtuber who can't spell "you're". it is a dead giveaway for poor advice.
@@byteme0000 dangerous advice. clearly you are ignorant of collectable coins, they naturally rise in price faster than any other gold coin or bar, you should be ashamed of your self for deceiving the innocent youtubers who dont know better than to get advice on youtube.
both US coins are not worth imo. The premiums are way too high.
Gold is Gold, why just only those two coins ... better just purchase Gold cast -bars produced by some reputable mints...voila !.
When it’s time to sell back. Gold isn’t always gold. In my experience. Thanks for the comment. I do appreciate it.
@@CashAndCoinsYT Yes indeed, more often than not, would have to sell at below Spot Price -2% or even -3%. The optimal price, is exactly at Spot.
no difference of price in Europe with my 3 coinssellers
It’s the way it should be. Thanks
A gold Buffalo is .004% more premium than a AGE, I don’t think that matters.
Every penny counts? 😉😅
@@CashAndCoinsYT is that a question or a statement?
