    You need discarding sabot's, make the projectile smaller and use the sabot to seal the barrel and hold the projectile. Also some fins would keep it stable, think tank not gun.

    • @Bob5mith
      @Bob5mith 3 года назад +2

      Fins wouldn't stabilize it that close to the muzzle. Unlike a real gun, or even most air guns, their setup is blowing air past the projectile well after if's left the barrel. It essentially has the wind at its back the whole time. A sabot probably wouldn't work for the same reason. Maybe a sabot designed to blow apart from behind. Maybe a shape that's aerodynamically stable forwards and backwards.

    • @AlbonitumG
      @AlbonitumG 3 года назад

      @@Bob5mith what about spin, will it stabilize the projectile in that environment? I'm just generally curious.
      I'm thinking of something like a rugby ball with fins to spin it.

    • @Bob5mith
      @Bob5mith 3 года назад +2

      @@AlbonitumG Spin would probably help a lot. But even if they devised a way to rifle the tube, it probably wouldn't be strong enough to impart enough spin on the heavy projectile. It's not impossible but I think it would be far less practical for their shop and available resources than playing with projectile shape and novel sabots. It would be a much more serious project and wouldn't really fit this channel.

    A couple of notes from someone who spent far too much of their childhood building air cannons:
    Your air reservoir is FAR too big. A pneumatic cannon only really needs about a 2:1 ratio between chamber and barrel volume. After that, the performance gain gets less and less. A huge air chamber just adds more time between shots, and a big blast of air that makes it harder to film.
    Secondly, a manually-actuatated ball valve is way too slow. Your projectile is gone before it's even halfway open. The best solution is a high-flow piston valve (search 'barrel-sealing piston valve).
    These do take a bit of effort to build, so an easier solution is one (or more) large quick-exhaust valves. These are extremely fast-acting valves which are actuated by venting a pilot valve (such as a ball valve or solenoid valve). They're readily available and will make your cannon go 'BANG' rather than 'whoosh'.

    If you look at a shotgun slug, it often has grooves in the side towards the rear end. This is to ensure that the heaviest part is the front, which leads. It also creates turbulence and drag at the rear, further stabilizing it. This would work best with the subsonic projectile you are using. An actual shotgun slug travels above the speed of sound, so it must be shockwave stabilized or the shotgun must be rifled.
    You can get away without rifling if you carve a deep, wide groove towards the blunt end of the projectile, and reduce the air capacity so you don't have a ton of extra air pushing the projectile.

    Take the air out of the barrel. Use tape over the end of the barrel to create an airtight seal. Gives it much less air resistance and this much more velocity
