  • In this project we're building a rig for installing heat set inserts. Use 3D printed parts and hardware to build a solder rig with smooth linear roller action! Make perfectly straight inserts with precision using a tip for installing inserts.
    Learn guide: learn.adafruit...
When working with 3D printed parts, a press can help you install inserts. This holds a soldering iron vertically and allows you to press down, perfectly straight.
The tip of the iron heats up the brass and softens the plastic. Pressing down pushes the insert into the part and once it cools down, it’s locked in place. This could be handy for folks doing a small production run or if you're looking for a tool to make this easier.
This rig makes installing inserts feel like pressing a hot knife through butter - The linear motion on this build feels smooth. This is definitely over engineered and we spent way too much time on it but we think folks will find it useful. The rig is modular and uses common hardware - The 3d printed parts can be remixed and modified to work with other components. There’s a learn guide for this project so folks can build their own.
Holding the iron straight seems simple enough and works fine most of the time but the conical shape of a regular soldering iron tip can catch the insert and accidentally pull it out while melting the plastic - And that can sometimes ruin parts.

Great idea. I bought a band heater and thermostat so I can turn my drill press into a hot foil stamper for my branding iron. Adding a die for hot pressing inserts will be a simple mod.

Well, that's another thing I'm going to have to add to the project list. If you made another printed part, or just another T-Nut you could make another depth stop for when all of your inserts are at the same height so that you have a physical stop to not push the inserts too far.

Interesting, but with the downside of being a uni-tasker that takes up a fair amount of space. I’m wondering what already existing tools/products something like this could be added on to. The first thing that comes to mind is the Dremel drill press rig. Other possibilities would be arbor presses or drill press rigs for hand drills.

I don't use heat inserts but I should try those. Even if I don't use them, I would see this handy because I make holes in my 3D printed parts often with my soldering Iron. Not the best toold, but it works

This is great. Have you seen the adapters you can buy for turning your hand drill into a drill press. They're not fantastic for drilling but they are cheaper than the hardware for this project and probably do the job fine since the soldering iron isn't generating vibrations and torque like a drill. I think all you'd need is the piece of wood and to 3d print a collar to make the iron fit the hole the drill would otherwise be clamped into.
As an aside, I love the mat in the intro, with all the compartments for bits and pieces. Is that the sort of thing marketed for electronics repair?

Really nice press! You don't mention anywhere what materials or printer you used to make the parts. Looks almost too good for 3D printer (FDM) so I'm wondering if you can shed some light on this. Just love that gorgeous finish.

  • @MarkSDD

The f3z and step files for this on Github don't open correctly in Fusion 360. The step file is corrupt or invalid, according to Fusion, and the F3Z doesn't produce any response when you try to upload it to a project in the data bar. I was hoping to edit the models to reduce the insert hole size to fit the ones I have.

Um...just use the nozzle on your printer. Put it on pre-heat. Use the manual Z control to lower the tip into the insert - and use the "DOWN" button to press the insert into the plastic at the perfect temperature. I do this all the time - it works great.
