It is kind of odd when you start watching the newest upload from one of your favorite youtubers and you see your self loading up after buying stuff for lunch.
Around here in Suffolk, 48 metre sprayers are the norm these days, while some veg growers in The Netherlands now use 53 metre sprayers that I presume matches their beds/crop spacings.

It just needs more thermal units. The wet stunted it but it should be ok. It may be little delayed but give it time.

Maize/corn is a WARM season grass. Planting it as someone did in early July, the ground will be nice and warm and the seeds will shoot out of the ground. Whereas, in your case, the ground is cold, they just sit there and wait until the warmth comes. And some will rot during the wait. I would venture a guess that the late planting will catch up easily to yours if not exceed it. Best wishes.

The weeds are totally usual. Round us everything is sprayed with a pre emergent and sometimes something after emerging. This is a standard practice that has to be done near us. It's totally usual .
it is a shit year for all crops in the north. a pity your first try for it is this year.

You are right. It isn't much better here in Japan either. We've had too much heat and sun at a time when it should have been wet in some areas and far, far too much rain in other areas. Since Tom, by his own admission, is learning, it is a good year to learn though. A kind of crash course into maize growing and any normal year after this will be far, far easier because of it.

I am in Kansas, center of the United States. Love to see how other countrys, regions farm thier land...That spray rig looks huge massive for your area, but hear since its wide open spaces it looks like a toy...
Everyone hear has the 500 to 600hp tractors, 60 foot wide planters hi speed ect ect.
It sure is humbeling to see the differant approachs used and methods.

Great video Tom the maize is looking great! I'd bring that up with your agronomist the leaves being broken and patchy. Me being a horticulturalist blight is very common with the temperatures we have here in the UK :)
Tom if the first cut was such poor quality and other farmers are struggling with the wet too, any maize crop will help to supplement the feed in the winter. Silage will be in short supply so It was the right decision to go for maize even if it's not a big crop. Don't beat yourself up!
Hello Tom, the corn you planted in the field looks good despite the seasonal conditions. But I recommend you to use seaweed fertilizer to make it better.

9:10 Tom, although i have no farming experience, i do know this: Corn can grow VERY fast. Our garden at home overlooks a cropfield where in the past it was growing corn every 2 out of 3 years. When we would go away for 7 days on holiday somewhere, we would leave with the corn being about 3 feet tall, when we came back, the corn was nearly double that. Given good conditions, you could probably timelapse 3 days of corn and visualy see them grow.

A bit of rain, a fair bit of sun, and it’d do your maize a world of good. That just isn’t happening this year. Here’s to hoping it works out.

"Knee high" is an old Midwestern American saying. Their plants bake in the sun, so I doubt you could keep up with them in the UK. Also, with the new hybrid seed, it's more like knee high by June 10-15th.
Lol you want light rain in the evenings and warm humid sunny days to grow corn...I grew up on a dairy farm and we grew corn for silage...knee high by the 4th of july is and old wise tale...maybe if you're in the South East U.S.
i think what could be a worry for you is a late harvest........idealy you wanted it to romp away now and be harvesting late september /early october before the ground gets wet.......you may be harvesting it before it's ripe. but we will see , maybe we will get a dry warm autumn

Thought of trying whole crop instead wheat or barley. Always been my preference to maize. Too expensive to grow and can trash fields in October harvesting. Cut whole crop in mid july and under sow a ley and can cut that September.
Ugh. For some seeds, cold and wet is a recipe for rot. (Finally… something I understand. LOL) We understand crop envy, Tom. We’ve all had it. What’s the brand of herbicide you’re using and what’s its half life?
Honestly tom i wouldnt worry yet. Were growing 1400 acres weve got some fields on sandy land that are 5-6ft but then some of the other heavy land fields are 1-2ft 🤷♂️ maize hates compaction so anh old wet spots or heavy traffic areas really want subsoiling to allow the maize to get through the plough pan so somrthing to think next year? We also run a pre and post emergant spray along with a topical herbicide later on jf we need it. Youll get there its a bad year for everyone so your not alone

If this is the first time using the ground for maize you will have spotty and patchy places. As you test your soil from year to year and improve the mineral content it will get better.

That maize is so far behind, even in June it was above knee high around here. It's now above the waist.

I drove around Alentejo Norte this weekend and I saw lots of maize fields with tall maize, like at least 150 height. But they have these giant gps irrigation things (which surely have a name but I don't know them - not in Dutch, not in English and not in Portugese). Some how this is a weird year. Our figs have lots of figs but very small and have of them are burned. From the Netherlands I am used to the contractors putting in the maize after the 1st of May and it being harvested at the end of September. Don't know when they do it in Portugal. But I also see lots of fields with maize where the maize is used to harvest the cobs. Still not sure if the cobs are used as animal feed or if people use the kernels for making meal.

its not just your maize tom, not had a good year on my allotments probably the worse year ive ever known, spuds have died of and a lot of stuff not grown at all.
we grow maize in the SW of the US, I kinda thought you might be bonkers trying to grow maize in the conditions you show. We have to irrigate to get grass, not like your amazing grass from just rain.
