This is really cool as a solution to a problem with mini PC’s and using external GPU’s! But if you’re willing to put up with this much faff and rigmarole you might as well just build a SFF system and have a system with a similar footprint and more powerful desktop hardware! (I might be bias though because I’m a SFF PC user myself)

I have this with a 4080 super. Performs on par with desktop. I love it because I can take it apart and travel with it, which is not possible to do comfortably with even the smallest desktop. I take this apart and put all the components in a small handheld pelican case. Super convenient.

Honestly eGPUs just need Thunderbolt 5. Would be cool to see a mini PC with a Core Ultra 9 285HX, and 6400 MT/s memory due to that being the new out of the box standard with TB5, connect it to a TB5 eGPU enclosure and you basically removed the bottleneck.

GTi 12 + EX dock is £550. Get a 3080Ti Founders out of CEX for £500 and you have an incredibly capable and very compact PC capable of 4K gaming. I have a 12900K + 3080Ti desktop and it is brilliant but massive as in a 680x case. This solution from Beelink is very tempting.

My concern with this would be that GPU power and PCIE connectors are only rated for a fairly low number of disconnect/reconnect cycles, but this setup implies a use case where you might be disconnecting/reconnecting the GPU fairly often.
I suppose if you had an old GPU sitting in a drawer then maybe it'd make sense to put it to use in this kind if setup. It's a bit of a cludgey solution though.

Don't get me wrong, I do find this method very intuitive. However, the initial appeal of a mini PC, to me, is the form factor. I feel like if someone were to go all the way to buy a dedicated graphics card, then they might as well just go ahead and buy a full-fledged PC. If desk space were the main point of consideration, then I don't see any difference if you decided to go with this min PC + EGPU dock + GPU combo since it would most likely take the same amount of space as a regular PC while being even less secure.

if u told that people 10 years ago, nobody would have believed u
alone the thermal restrictions seem to be impossible to overcome in such a tiny case.

I bought one of these and I'm a little disappointed with the state of them. The performance is great, but everything else is a struggle. disassembly is way more involved than I thought it would be but that's fine. My biggest complaint is the drivers. None of the drivers are available on their website. I had to email support and they sent me a mega link to drivers, half of which contained nothing. The ethernet is supposedly Intel based on the driver they sent me, but Intel Driver and Support Utility doesn't recognize it. My SD card slot isn't recognized and I'm currently talking to support. Speaking of support, I'm pretty sure it's just a single dude. Every single support email I've sent them (and there has been a few), is responded to by the same person and I feel like he's doing his best, but it's not very helpful.
I'm glad I have one, I quite like it when I'm using it but I'm only able to deal with it's issues because I know a bit about computers and thankfully I didn't recommend one of these Chinese mini pc's to my grandma -which I nearly did. These are not ready for mainstream consumers.

I still think the most possible solutions for eGPU is for Laptop but with raw PCIe X16 Lanes slot. Not USB-C or USB4 connection.
The best candidate for this, is Framework Laptop. They already have patented design for swappable Laptop GPU, so why not include an empty PCIe X16 slot instead?
So user can use full sized GPU whenever possible. Of course user have to provide its own Power Supply.

Why is most of the desktop computer case there, especially if the cases aren't really doing that great a job funneling air from inside / outside to cool?
