    Benny is the ONLY good guy in the entire story. Roger is toxic and so is Maureen. Mimi tries to get other guys to do heroin and also tries to seduce other men despite knowing she has AID's. Joanne is an asshole to Mark just because he's her ex even though SHE DUMPED HIM. Collins grandstands but offers no substantial way to deal with the AID's pandemic and uses his dead lobers name to hotwire an ATM. Angel makes money by killing a dog and laughs about it. Mark is the most insufferable of them all. Ignoring his loving family and the future that others help him get to just so he can be self righteous and make what amounts to a home movie. Benny was at least supportive, reasonable, respectful and you could tell he was always trying to do the right thing.

    • @NotAVampyre

      Naw even Benny sucks. The show and movie starts out with him going back on his promise that his old roommates could live in his building rent free to get them to stop a protest for him, and then locked the building when they refused to.

    This is the first negative review of RENT I’ve enjoyed, mostly because you don’t come from a condescending angle. I personally enjoy the movie despite it’s flaws because it introduced me to the source material, which is in my opinion, pretty. The message I took from it wasn’t that they were necessarily good or bad people, it’s that they’re just people. I think the entire idea behind it was to spend a year in these characters lives, see their love for eachother and see them as humans- flaws and all. Some people criticize it for using AIDs or HIV as a backdrop, but I don’t see it that way, I think the reason it takes a backseat to the story of their bond and love for one another is to simply show that despite some of them living with the virus, it wasn’t like they were any different from anyone else. I think one of the reasons so many LGBT people love this material is because it was one of the first times a huge musical or media adaptation really just humanized the people in it who had AIDs instead of making it all about how awful it is to have it. Anyways, sorry for the novel. But your points are well brought up! You got your message across without being mean or snarky and that really speaks to me as someone genuinely criticizing it instead of trying to tear it apart due to hating the source material. Cheers

      I think part of my separation from Rent is that it's not my first pro LGBT+ work. I've seen some of the positive points people take away from the show and movie in other forms, so I end up judging subsequent ones on a harder grading scale because just being humanizing of marginalized groups isn't something I'm looking for or need at this point. I kinda want more than that. But, I can't ignore that for a lot of people Rent made them feel seen finally and that they're not alone.

    Something that has always bothered me is that Mimi says she's 19. Then, later in the movie (unsure if this is also stated in the stage show) Mimi says how she dated Benny like 2 years ago... has anyone else noticed this???

    I recently watched this movie without having watched the original musical and I hated it.
    The characters are annoying and unlikeable, the plot is all over the place, and the overall structure was horrible.
    The songs were, at best, as forgettable as sitting in a classroom all day, and at worst, as unbearable as scratching a chalkboard with fingernails.

    I've never clicked so fast...Anyway, the one thing I never got is why is Joanne so snarky with Mark. Yeah, he's a jerk, but it's not like he was the one wrecking her and Maureen's relationship. It's like in "Friends" with the wife of Ross's ex. She had always ticked me off as SHE was the homewrecker yet treated Ross like crud.

    • @NotAVampyre
      @NotAVampyre  5 лет назад +2

      I can understand why she's snarky. It's her gf's ex. The ex that her gf called because Joann herself couldn't fix something. Just knowing that your partner is still talking to their previous lover is uncomfortable and makes you wonder, especially if you're doubting your own relationship. Mark was also being snarky with Joann, so the feelings were mutual.

      @@NotAVampyre well the title of your video conveys that it is universally known that rent is not very good. I think the show is good because it was very mainstream and relatable at the time. Since rent came out in 1996 it came out right after the AIDS epidemic; which had started 80s.creator Jonothan Larson (although he didnt have it himself), had many friends with this same disease and so he used as inspiration, so he incorporated Angel who also had AIDS so the show is relatable in that aspect. Jonothan Larson also incorporated music that had emotion and captivated the audience. For example, the song seasons of love, trys to imply that so much is done in a year and it should be measured in love.

    • @NotAVampyre
      @NotAVampyre  5 лет назад

      The title is reflective of my thoughts on the show and acts as a continuation of the series I did on Rent, the first video being about how much I dislike the musical.
      And you're still not really giving me reasons why the musical itself is good. By pointing out how mainstream it used to be, you're only again stating that other people loved it, and the personal lives of the people involved in the production don't matter wheb assessing the work itself.

    Fellow Chicagoan! Love your videos. So insightful and calm.

  • @jacobbelow4136
    @jacobbelow4136 5 лет назад +1

    I kind of expected it to be paricularly cold in Chicago. Last I checked the weather forecast there was a vortex of wind circling over the great lakes and causing major winds and temperature drops-all the way out to the east coast, where I am! So yeah, we're all bundling up and staying indoors around this time!
    Anyways, disregarding the quality of RENT as a stage show and how it transferred to film, I basically resort to the default mindset of "If it's based on/adpated from something else, chances are it will be at least a little inferior." Not that it's always the case, and it's wonderful when it exceeds my expectations, but trasnferring a story from one medium to another does mean that some sacrifices just have to be made, and the trick is to just make sure it doesn't diminish the integrity of the overall product.
    But regardless of that, I think the mindset of adapting stage shows to film and the like, is less, "Any major money-making show needs to be a movie to make even MORE money!" (even though I definitely don't rule out the factor that money IS just about always involved), and is more about making the show more accessible to audience who don't live close to any major theatres and can't afford to go to Broadway. But that is just my interpretation.
    I didn't watch RENT live, but from what I've been hearing, it was rather lackluster. That in-and-of-itself wasn't what was most disappointing for me. The real disappointing thing was that if it had been succesful, maybe TV broadcasters would be open to doing some live productions that other (more mature-themed) musicals would be fit for (and even by extent, improve upon the mistakes of the more infamous musical film adaptations; The Newsies is an example where it started out as a badly-received film, but became a lot more successful on Broadway, and had a really good live production filmed by Brett Sullivan). Live TV might be less about playing it safe and actually doing something good for shows that deserve it.

    • @NotAVampyre
      @NotAVampyre  5 лет назад

      I really, really want TV musicals to succeed. But, something I've noticed is that Fox especially has recently been picking up shows that don't agree with their "family values!" policy. WIth Rocky Horror, they made their version so sexless and edgeless you have to wonder why it was chosen in the first place. Grease was okay. Then with Rent all of the swears are removed and the lesbian love moments seem awkward like wanting to be sexy but not wanting to upset the big wigs. It's not like there isn't a plethora of shows that aren't so outwardly trying to be raunchy and address related taboo, but Fox keeps going for them and failing by making shows like Rocky Horror and Rent TV friendly. NBC hasn't had the best track record, but at least they're picking musicals that don't specifically conflict with the status quo of broadcast television.
      You also have a point that often the shows with bad movie adaptations are the ones most deserving of remakes, even if it's just live performances. But, like you point out, entertainment always tends towards tried and conventional adaptations over something risky. Except NBC with Hair though. That is an exception to this rule, but not a full deffence of them since they're previously guilty of sticking to the most popular options like Sound of Music and Hairspray

      @@NotAVampyre Hmm that's a fair point, but do u like the other films he's done, or at least the ones I mentioned?
      Now in regards to RENT translating some sung conversations into plain old dialogue, I thought it worked fine, cause when making a movie based on a stage musical, sometimes a conversation that is entirely sung might work on stage, but can seem awkward on film, for example when Mark introduces himself at that meeting/seminar or wherever he was, if he had sung while doing that in the movie, I'd be like, "hmmm should be he really be singing his name like that"? Anyway, I having watched RENT as an adult a couple years ago, I felt I had a better grasp on the story than when I was a kid. I thought they showed enough of Maureen and Joanne's relationship. I also think they made Benny morally ambiguous, at least in the beginning of the movie, cause u saw moments of them getting the feeling Benny really was their friend, especially when Mark and Roger said "Joanne" when Benny asked who Maureen's new "boyfriend" was LOL. Roger and Mimi's back and forth thing worked well enough, I never found it confusing, and the montage of Without You did a good job of explaining why Roger wasn't willing to pursue Mimi at first, even One Song, Glory added some weight to his character. I don't recall Joanne being rude to Mark in the movie tho, I remember them getting along. Then again I've never seen RENT on Broadway
      There's an alternate ending to the movie, where they still present Mark's movie on the projector and they're singing the No Day But Today/Without You medley, but it ends where the movie started, with all the main characters on stage singing, including Angel. This ending implies that all the characters were already dead. It's on the DVD, have u seen this ending? U can look it up on RUclips if u haven't

    Just finished the movie for my first time. It's not bad but I hated it lmao I can't stand musicals. So many freaking songs 😂 Tango Maureen & the Goodbye Michael song are the only ones I remember. Couldn't follow the lyrics from one to the next, just became forgettable where I couldn't follow any of the movie. Like the guitar guy & Mimi had no relationship buildup, there was barely any focus on them, I thought he was her sponsor 😂 So I had 0 investment in their relationship. Like it felt rushed, where as Angel & Collins had an actual storyline. Plus, how are they gonna pay rent? The ginger is the only one with a job. Is he just gonna be everyone's sugar daddy? & why did they start singing at the end instead of bringing Mimi to a hospital? Like, Angel went to the hospital... He could afford it somehow & he just played a bucket on the streets. Idk, maybe I missed something but yeah, the endless singing was incredibly distracting 😂 Oh, & I thought it crushed the Oscars, so my expectations were very high, now I just saw it got 0 noms. Now, I feel like I'd have enjoyed it more if I didn't expect so much 😞
