    dearth is the trigger to no laying worker in winter.

      you stated it in the beginning may or may not have brood same thing is true with the workers.

    If you open a hive thats queenless they will be screeming or howling .
    They will be noticably loud .
    A frame of hatching brood with larva and eggs like you said .

      The colony sound of queenless colonies does seem to have some validity - but it is not a "safe" measurement of queen rightness and a full inspection should be made to determine queen's presence!

      No not seeing her or hearing them roar arent guarantees .
      If you take frames of bees and split them fr a hive you will hear them scream for their mom in as little as 2hrs .
