  • The basics of Actions and Bonus Actions in the Dungeons and Dragons RPG from Wizards!
    In our previous video we discussed how combat in D&D is structured with Rounds and Turns. And in part 2 of our Basics of Combat series we explore what a player can do when it is their turn -- take actions and bonus actions. What can you do on your turn beyond just stabbing someone? We look at concepts like Dashing, Disengaging, Hiding, and so on. This video also provides an overview of how Bonus Actions supplement your turn's activities.

    Here's to hoping I can still get a reply on a video posted 4 years ago! I'm using D&D Beyond and only have access to the Basic Rules. I've looked and searched and can only find reference to Bonus Actions, and statements that you can do something with a bonus action, but nowhere can I find something that states what you did, that during one turn you always have these 3 options: 1-Action plus 1-Bonus action plus 1-Reaction. I'm looking for an answer to this situation: a Ranger uses Hunter's Mark, kills the creature thus marked, then while still in effect he "can use a bonus action on a subsequent turn of yours to mark a new creature." So as I understand from your video, he can in fact pick a new target on the same turn he kills the creature previously marked. Thank you for the video.

    AD&D 2nd Ed & Basics4Gamers: Thanks for the question and the extremely helpful answer. I'm working with a Dual Wielding Ranger now and was having trouble wrapping my brain around the "bonus action" rules...Ya'll made it clear with the Q&A!!! Also,...B4G...again...Love your videos. I've just sent links to all of your vids to 4 newbies for them to check out. If you get a chance, can you do Rogue Class in more depth sometime? We have two baby Rogues (one thief build and one leaning towards assassin) that are stumbling through 2nd level :-D. Great Work B4G!!!

    Maybe they should have just named these things Type A and Type B actions. Then the explanation would be simple: "On your turn you may perform one Type A action and one Type B action."

    I started a new session and started wondering why I was having trouble. I was letting the players use their movement as an action and endless bonus actions per round and this has made it hard to create a challenge for them and it’s my own fault for not re reading the rules. Should I continue this campaign and let them use the home brew rules or show them the real rules and ask them if they would like to keep the improvised system (which they obviously would prefer) or just say sorry I got them wrong here are the actual rules

    • @HowItsPlayed
      @HowItsPlayed  3 года назад +2

      I would just say, "sorry -- I got it wrong!" And then start using the official rule.

    • @HowItsPlayed

      I agree -- it's a confusing name and even the text in the book is confusing. But "Actions" and "Bonus Actions" are completely different and not interchangeable. Think of them as resources a character can spend. At the start of every turn, the player is handed a Red Coin and a Blue Coin. Everything a character can do is listed in the book with a cost for doing it. "Actions" cost 1 Red Coin (Attack, Dash, Disengage, Dodge, cast a spell with a casting time of "1 Action", etc). And "Bonus Actions" cost 1 Blue Coin to do (Two-Weapon Fighting, cast a spell with a casting time of "1 Bonus Action", etc). You can't spend a Blue Coin to take an Action and you can't spend a Red Coin to take a Bonus Action. And any unspent coins are lost at the end of the player's turn.
      The main distinction between the two is that "Actions" are generally things everyone is expected to be able to do... attack, dodge, search, dash, etc. And Bonus Actions are (usually) things not available to everyone... they're things only specific people can do. You have to earn them by leveling up in a specific class. Not everyone can use "Cunning Action", only Rogues can. Not everyone can utter a "Vow of Enmity", only Paladins can.
      So every turn a character can perform one Action (Red Coin) that are mostly accessible to everyone, and one Bonus Action (Blue Coin) that is something they unlocked. But since they only have 1 of each coin, they can't buy 2 Actions or 2 Bonus Actions.
      Does that help?

      @@HowItsPlayed Totally helps, I was misunderstanding that Bonus actions refer to specific abilities and skills to the class of the character. I was under the false impression that you could get bonus attacks, etc. because it was part of the combat. Now I understand that it is all character specific and has its limitations based on that. Cheers that was super helpful. I am trying to learn the 5e rules and having not played anything either than 2nd edition before it is quite the learning curve.

    Okay, great video....have a question..with a Wizard, they can cast a spell as an action....but can they cast a cantrip as a bonus action, and this is the key point, if that cantrip states in the spell description that it requires 1 action......having trouble getting some clarification....we have some cantrips listed as a bonus action, some are reactionary and some are listed as an actual action.....so, if they choose to cast a cantrip with an action listed, is that there action or can they cast a regular spell which also requires an action. please help as it is not clear on how this is to be handled.

    • @HowItsPlayed
      @HowItsPlayed  4 года назад +1

      "Actions" and "Bonus Actions" are completely different things, even though they have similar names. If a spell says it takes an Action to cast, then it cannot be cast using a Bonus Action. And if a spell says it takes a Bonus Action to cast, then it cannot be cast with an Action. So, you could cast 1 spell that requires an Action and another that requires a Bonus Action in the same round, but you could not cast 2 spells that require Actions or 2 spells that require Bonus Actions.

      Cantrips can be used as an action or bonus action. Spells are actions only.

    • @jctxcboy36
      @jctxcboy36 4 года назад

      @@matthewshroba1511 Yes, I agree....but some Cantrips are an action, some are a bonus action and some are reactionary which means, in my opinion, that if a Cantrip is cast and requires a full action, the PC can not also cast an actual spell that also requires a full action. They would need to choose between the cantrip or an actual spell since they both require 1 full action which prevents a 2nd full action in the same round, correct?

  • @Auscilius
    @Auscilius 3 года назад +2

    Wait... so you start with a Reaction in every turn you have in combat?! I thought you had to use the "Ready" action in order to receive a reaction, and on top of that, declaring what will trigger that reaction. Help...

    • @HowItsPlayed
      @HowItsPlayed  3 года назад +1

      Every round you can perform one Action, one Bonus Action, and one Reaction. I find it easiest to think of these as currencies that you can spend... Actions and Bonus Actions are spent to do things during your turn, and Reactions are spent to do things during someone else's turn. The Ready action is one way you can spend your Reaction, but it's not the only way. Reactions can also be spent to perform Opportunity Attacks or to cast spells that have a casting time of 1 Reaction.
      But the key is, you only have 1 Reaction to spend per round... and that refreshes not at the start of the Round, but at the start of your turn. So, if you spend your Reaction to perform a Ready Action, you can't also perform an Opportunity Attack until the start of your next turn.

    • @Auscilius
      @Auscilius 3 года назад

      @@HowItsPlayed okay, okay... hmmm can I on my turn then use my reaction for a ready action, and attack on the same turn? Or I do I use my action AND my reaction to get "ready?"

    • @HowItsPlayed
      @HowItsPlayed  3 года назад

      @@Auscilius On your turn you use your Action to perform Ready and name a trigger. At this point, you haven't spent your Reaction yet. If sometime before your next turn comes back around the trigger you stated occurs, you can then spend your Reaction to perform the action you Readied. If you do so, you have no Reactions left to spend and therefore could not do other things, like Opportunity Attacks, until your next turn (when all of your actions and reaction refreshes). Likewise, if you use your Action during your turn to Ready, and you make an Opportunity Attack before your trigger condition occurs, then you will not have a Reaction left to spend when the trigger occurs and therefore could not act with the action that was readied.
      So, to sum up, you spend your Action during your turn to "Ready" but do not spend your Reaction until the trigger occurs (*if* it occurs).

    • @PGIFilms
      @PGIFilms 2 года назад

      I don't have any of the 5e books yet, but I've been watching a bunch of 5e videos. Certain abilities allow you to cast a spell as a BONUS ACTION and you CAN cast a cantrip as your ACTION, but not another spell on the same turn. Basically, a BONUS ACTION spell (of any level) can only be paired with an ACTION to cast a 0-level cantrip on the same turn. Technically, you could cast 3 spells on the same turn if you have a reaction spell (like Shield) and you haven't used a REACTION effect yet.
