"WASHINGTON, Dec 12 (Reuters) - Harvard University's governing board declared its support for the Ivy League school's president on Tuesday, a day after meeting to weigh the public backlash following remarks she made at last week's congressional hearing on antisemitism.

What happens to the nuance of free speech if you misgender someone at Harvard. It seems strange they pick up the free speech banner after a decade of cracking down on their students speech.
Here we go with the what ifs. Who do you know from Harvard that “misgendered” someone and claimed free speech? Or are you twisting this to fit your agenda?
They rank dead last in terms of free speech. And by a mile too.
Unfortunately, Harvard will not fire you if you intentionally misgender someone, nor call for the genocide of trans people or advocate for them being stripped of their human rights. That opinion is sadly very popular today

One positive thing that has come out all this elite schools drama is that after people have seen how students ,faculty members ,graduates( ex. Cent with his lack of debate skills resorting to rants) have behaved it shows that degrees from these schools are overrated. The prestige of a degree from these schools is dead which is great for students that can't afford the hundreds of thousands of dollars to go to them, now when applying for the same jobs as graduates from these schools the field will be a little bit more fair.

I don't think the US with both of its parties want this issue to be resolved. If they wanted to, they would have forced a two states solution long ago. I've gotten booked for inadequate citations twice.
Literally both times it was obviously a mistake simply because I accredited the wrong source. Shit like that happens on occasion, especially when you're dealing with sources on largely the same niche subject field that may have been dealing with similar or same results.
Typically speaking, *however* ... they usually just ask you to rewrite and source correctly.
Sure, plagiarism is serious, but 'inadequate citation' could literally be as innocent as you incorrectly citing a source. Plagiarism has be wilful intellectual theft.
You might as well blame someone for having once incorrectly filled out a tax form and having to redo it when the ATO wags a finger and says they found a discrepancy that one time--And calling it 'tax fraud'.
Incidentally something I have also done ... though it turned out by redoing my form I was actually eligible for a bigger return.
If it gets to the point where an 'inadequate citation' two or three times, basically gets you kicked out of a job, over literally possibly hundreds of papers you have authored, co-authored, etc ... Well I struggle to think anybody that went post-grad that will have a job remaining.
Don't lie, either ... who hasn't pulled an all-nighter on a 5,000+ essay, only proofread it once or twice, and just said; 'Fuck it, need sleep. Good enough' ...?

I've even once committed the crime of forgetting to even add my bibliography to an essay.
Still had all my footnotes, cites, in script ... but honestly that's way worse of a 'thought crime' in academia. I mean, it's not ... I just printed it off after the course co-ord told me quietly a week later.
Plagiarism is one of those things that 'you know it when you see it', there's no hard and fast way to technically define it--Because if you did try to hardline say 'You are expelled for plagiarism' just because you forgot to do something like, say, *forget your entire bibliography* (once again, way worse than merely 'inadequate citation') ... Then a lot of students are just going to fail because they're stressed, tired, hungry, overworked, etc ...
I mean ... sure? Foundationally speaking, forgetting your bibliography is pretty bad--But it's not malicious.
Intentionality has to be the focus, not some typo on a page.

@@davidradovsky5354I looked at the alleged passages. We're literally talking about 2 paragraphs in an entire book length dissertation that were cited accurately but insufficiently. This is a pretty minor infraction and extremely common.
Definitely a cause for a little chiding and pubic lampooning. Perhaps even an apology if one wanted to be especially harsh. But overall, not really a big deal.

I am tired of it being OK for Jews to be targeted on college campuses. If any other ethnic group was thrown in that question, each one of those college presidents would have said with a definite no instead of avoiding it. I know from experience I graduated from Evergreen in 2003 and for my last year attendance I did not always feel very safe there.

First of all the question was plain and simple.
It was asking if calling for the genocide of an entire ethnic group of students is in line with the anti bullying policies of these institutions. It mentioned nothing about any specific slogans.
Also it is blatantly obvious that from the river to the sea Palestine will be free is calling for a one state solution.
The destruction of Israel and the annihilation of the Jews is not only what Hamas professes in their 'school curriculum' and their propaganda, their charter is rife with this hatred. So in this context how can it mean anything else?

As a semi-retired academic, I know that sloppy citations are an occupational hazard - especially when deadlines are involved. Academics should minimize them, but they are NOT equivalent to plagiarism. And when they discovered, they shouldn't ruin careers.

The only reason I think Cenk makes a good point is because the number of 'inaccurate citation' amounts to only 4. In what would obviously be a career spanning some 30+ years of academic work, she would have added thousands of citations to her work. That means these investigations have shown 99.999% of her citations are accurate.
Claudine Gay seems to have published only 11 peer-reviewed journal papers in her entire academic career. Now the change in the ratios do indicate that she is a willful defaulter and in her line of work it's practically a crime

The allegations of plagiarism are clearly politically motivated, but let's not pretend the left doesn't do the same thing to its political opponents. What's good for the goose is good for the gander: either we reject politically motivated "hatchet jobs" altogether, or we accept that such "hatchet jobs" are a legitimate weapon in the hands of both sides. Claudine Gay was instrumental in closing down Roland Fryer's lab in response to allegations that he was unduly flirtatious with some of his students. Notably, Fryer, an economist, had published scholarly articles that purportedly debunked claims that the police disproportionately shoot unarmed Black men. Harvard had good cause to censure Fryer, but closing down his lab for flirting was arguably disproportionate and obviously politically motivated. That was a hatchet job too. I think it's also significant that Fryer, unlike Gay, grew up poor and under very adverse circumstances. Gay went to Exeter Academy - one of America's oldest and most prestigious private high schools, making her a member of the most privileged class of people in the US. By contrast, Fryer grew up poor, was routinely beaten by his alcoholic father, but beat the odds, winning an athletic scholarship, but choosing to focus on his studies, rather than athletics, once he matriculated. He went on to earn a PhD from UPenn and later much deserved tenure at Harvard. Fryer would have made a much better President of Harvard (although his talents would have been wasted in an administrative role). The man is a hero and outstanding role model. He is a much better representative of Black America than Claudine Gay, even if his research does test mainstream narratives on race. Testing widespread social assumptions is exactly what a rigorous economist does.
I regard myself as a member of the left, but there are many on our side who lack intellectual and moral honesty and reject good-faith debate of controversial policies, including policies that distribute opportunities, jobs, and promotions by race. Sorry, but rejecting race-neutral hiring, promotions, and admissions does not make one a racist. Let's debate these ideas on the merits. That begins by acknowledging that racial preferences at institutions like Harvard are, at least on the surface, racist.
If Harvard and Claudine Gay were staunch defenders of free speech, I would have more sympathy for her invocation of free speech at the congressional hearing, but Harvard has not been a bastion of free speech, and it's not only conservatives, that acknowledge this. Yes, let's stand up for free speech, but that means equally defending EVERYONE's right to free speech.
These issues regarding free speech and meritocracy are entirely separate from the Israel - Palestine War.
Bottom line, we on the left can do better. We can't just ignore extremism and hypocrisy on our own side, just because there are extremist hypocrites on the other side as well. We also need to be better on speech and arguing controversial ideas on the merits and not just cry "racism!", "transphobia!" or whatever in response to criticism of left policies. Not only is it dishonest, but it's alienating people from the party.

As abhorrent and offensive as it may be, a person has the right to express their opinion that they desire to see another group annihilated. The person in question just can’t actually act on it and/or target and harass individuals. Free speech isn’t free if it only covers speech that offends no one.
