The anime of Rosario+Vampiire was a tragedy, because the manga actually turned into a pretty serious story with really good art. It's kinda cool how you watch the mangaka's art progressively improve as the story turns from a cliche harem comedy into a strong character-driven fantasy-action drama.

While I wouldn't recommend Sora no Otoshimono/Heaven's Lost Property to anyone right now, it has a special place in my heart, as it marked my transition from watching complete garbage for the booba to liking more complex and layered stories. Sora no Otoshimono starts as a lighthearted pointless comedy and then slowly builds up some darker undertones and a more complex plot as the season 2 and 3 progress. I won't pretend those "more serious" elements are any good by my current standards but I still think it was a suitable rite-of-passage show after which I started going for better stories overall in media.

    • @Dracozauryks
      @Dracozauryks 3 года назад +17

To add, SnO had 2-3 character moments that I really appreciated back then. I don't remember the exact context but the blue-not-Hatsune-Miku-one had an ample opportunity to grab MC for herself amid some teen drama moments (I think Icarus had disappeared or smth) and almost did but decided to stop in the end in order not to hurt Icarus. It isn't 10/10 writing by any means but it added a level of characterization I hadn't seen in other ecchis at the time.

It's about a girl vampire who, instead of sucking blood like normal vampires, she produces too much blood for her body to hold. So she has to bite victims and give them her blood (which automatically matches anyone's blood type) and it makes them feel amazing the next day. I got it from my cousin and I had no money so it's the only manga I had.

The chibi vampire manga is pretty good. I still reread the whole thing every now and then. Yuna kagesaki also made the Hekikai no Aion manga( starts out rough but improves later on) and the witches house the diary of ellen( best to play the witchs house game first. It contains spoiler backstory of a character that totally spoils the games ending.) Unfortunately Aion never got fully released in English so it's best to stick with scans. As far as I know the witches house manga is her most recently released in English. It's a very bloody supernatural horror manga and pretty fun. I'm honestly surprised she doesn't write horror much. I love how her art is instantly recognizable. It's probably the way she draws eyes.

This was the very first anime to which I sat down to and seriously watched and invested myself into, from then onwards, I was weeb. Before this, I’d just watch anime from the tv over my sister’s shoulder, not really paying much attention to it. So I gotta thank Heaven’s Lost Property since I probably wouldn’t be who I am today without it. Can’t believe I just said that but it’s true.

A week ago I decided to binge read the manga after years of wanting to know what happened next. I was happy to remember the characters and the world and learn what became of them after the anime and movie (I didn't know there was a second movie until after I began reading).
The wish-granting thing being nerfed in-universe was explained (can't remember if it was explained in the anime) after Tomoki wakes up. Since Tomoki wished for it to all be a dream, Ikaros made not only the wishes from the card all a dream, but also the omni-potent card. That's how they lost the omni-potent wishes. Ikaros still had older model cards that have limited abilities, and that's why Tomoki and the others can't just wish for anything.
I enjoyed the read, but I understand it's far from a masterpiece. The series is definitely "harem trope-heavy" 80% of the time. It also just has some weird plot points that's definitely just because the author wills it. The old model cards are literally just plot devices for shenanigans though not the actual plot except the Dive Game. One major theme of the series is to make your own decisions, so Tomoki refuses to accept Nymph as his servant, but for some reason he keeps Ikaros? He almost accepts Nymph to help give her wings, but in that moment she sprouts new ones (for reasons later explained in the manga or maybe Movie 2) so Tomoki just says never mind.
Still, I had fun reading it, but maybe that's just me because I enjoy stupid shit. When Tomoki isn't performing any criminally perverted actions or when the rest of the cast isn't "comically" assaulting Tomoki, the series is enjoyable. Unfortunately that just means scraping out at least 80% of the series. The little moments where Tomoki seriously questions the Angeloids and Angels actions and motives are nice. I really enjoyed Eishirou, Nymph, and Chaos's character arcs; Astraea's was fine too. I wish Hiyori had more focus outside plot relevancy, but I guess her aggressiveness in love would force the plot against the author's expectations. Ikaros's arc was to be expected. Sohara nearly doesn't have an arc despite becoming what could've been an important character at the end.

Manga only here, Heaven's lost property was one of the first manga i've ever read. I don't know how the anime handled it but the manga did at least have some couple of intriguing mysteries in it. Most of the time at the end of the typical "wacky ecchi chapter" is some rather dark story developments, the glasses-wearing guy was my favorite as he's the only one who actually investigate shits and get the plot moving.
Another thing i like is Ikaros's character. Even though she falls into the emotionless submissive anime girl stereotype, she's hardly ever been put in extreme sexual situations like the other girls, with Tomoki (really hope i got his name right) going out of his way to never really harass her or take advantage of her submissiveness toward him.
I've read Dears and Chobits, mangas with similar emotionless/ naive Main Female Character like Ikaros, and they were pretty much just cute "waifu" whose personality didn't matter at all. At the end of their mangas, the main female get a "reset", basically forgo all of their character development and turning them into innocent blank slate once again, it feel like the author is stuck between sexualizing them and treating them like children that need constant coddling (honestly i don't even dislike these mangas, but the fact that the main females are just pretty but empty shells whose only purpose is to follow the MC around bugs me a lot)
In contrast, Ikaros does get a chance to develop as a character, she does grows to care about things outside of Tomoki, she does learn to fight not because of orders but to protects her loved ones.Tomoki actively encouraged Ikaros to feel and think for herself, i should note that one of the first time Tomoki became genuinely attracted to Ikaros was when he saw her smile.
Sorry for the rambling btw, i've reread Heaven's lost property recently and didn't have any place to put my thoughts so i wrote most of them here. All in all, i wouldn't say the manga was a masterpiece or anything, the ecchi slice-of-life side of the story can either be dull or extremly infuriaring for those who are not into those sort thing. Tomoki isn't anything new, being a harem protagonist with girls flocking all over him eventhough the most he ever do is treating them with the utmost basic of human decency. The manga was average to mediocre at best, even so, it still did have a lot of great things about it that's sadly overlooked nowadays.

At one point, as the actual plot of the series began picking up with Nymph and (let me google his name...) Sugata investigating some mysterious shit.... it hit me: why isn't this guy the main character? Sugata here is actually being proactive and advancing the plot. Tomoki is off committing assault and other perverted shit like he always does. So why isn't Sugata the main character with Tomoki doing pathetic goofy hijinks off in the background?
And that's when I finally realized how the plot is largely irrelevant and it's all just an excuse for titties and panty shots and sexual assault and violent assault. So it doesn't matter that Tomoki spends all his time getting beaten up, committing assault, creeping girls out, and otherwise doing perverted hijinks... as that's the show. The plot just doesn't matter.
So I guess it's mindless popcorn trash you can watch with your brain box firmly switched off, but it wasn't for me. For one, actual tiddies are always a single google search away. So why not just cut out the middle man of terrible plot and skip to the actual "content" being offered here? I just don't have time for ecchi animes unless there is enough story, intriguing characters, or well written comedy to go with the padding
(Also I thought Nymph should have paired up with Sugata as they were the only competent, non-insane, characters in the show... well, the least insane.)

Obviously it's your channel, your call, but I would like to see more videos about anime and trends that you do like versus the ones you don't. I think you're funnier and more interesting when you're talking about what's great in a show. I get hyped when a new video comes out from you, but five of your last nine videos are about things that you dislike rather than you like. What I've gotten most out of your content is finding gems that I've missed, like Land of the Lustrous and Made in Abyss. I don't get any gems about what to watch next when you talk about something that you've come to realize is shit. I'll keep watching them all the way through to help with watch-time because I'd like to see this channel grow and get more of the recognition it deserves.

Yes the humor was juvenile. Yes, the tone was all over the place. Yes, the story took forever to go anywhere and never really did. But there are ways to turn these traits into quality if you do them well enough and a few of these old harem series managed to do it. I think this is one of these cases along with often maligned shows such as Love Hina and Hayate no Gotoku. A terrible concept very well executed by a mangaka who knows exactly what they are doing.
I'll admit that these mangas (not talking about the animes, they usually suck) didn't always age very well, but if you compare them to the dredge of that time, you can acknowledge the craftsmanship and there are still things to be appreciated here. I still remember some of the chapters of HLP and they are still hilarious and even the tonal shifts, despite being as subtle as Loss often work in a very strange and hard to describe way.
Even someone who hates isekai as a genre should be able to acknowledge that some are better than others and we should be able to do the same thing with 2000s harem rom-coms.

I personally haven't seen this show yet, having watched Syy's ten-part video essay that takes the polar opposite stance to this video, but in those videos, one of the ten parts is dedicated to how inferior the dub is at conveying the show's qualities.
Between the delivery, how apparently the dub censors or removes some vital parts or something, and other things (It's been some time since I've watched it) I think you've gotten the short end of the stick here.
I think, in judging this show as a basic ecchi harem anime that you enjoyed as a kid but can't enjoy now because of all the ecchi filler content, it made it more difficult to enjoy when the show did take itself seriously because part of its appeal is in how it subverts the expectations of being a harem comedy.
There are certainly a handful of anime that fit that lens, but I think this wasn't the best example, personally.

"Pass around the same 4 voice actors like a soggy backwood" I love this saying more than I should. Also god was it so damn true. 2005 - 2012 or so. It was baaaad. That one female that plays one of the main characters, example being Full Metal Panic. That one grown man that's always playing teenahe children because he has a high pitched voiced...and the moment I unpause at 1:32 the mfer comes up.
Steven Blum. And then that one soft spoken female who always plays a young teen and is typically a supporting character.
Holy fuck; I just remembered that I watched this. The flying panties clip brought it back. Man, this show was mad forgettable. The ONLY thing that stuck with me was them singing about is nipples. Didn't even remember the title.

The Mario 64 music in the background is a pretty great addition to the video.
