My neighbors hate your videos my surround sound loves it, I often close my eyes and just listen to the differences between runs but youtube does so much compression on audio its..... But none the less thanks for your time, these videos should make any motorhead grin from ear to ear. Idaho, USA!
thank you! ive done a few knock control videos. one on a turbo 4 cyl, the other on a bone stock 4.8 - the 4.8 compared external knock monitor to factory sensors
Really enjoy the videos. Good explanations of what you’re doing and why you’re doing it. Watching from Friendswood, Tx. Just South of Houston. Thanks again.
Great videos. You are extremely knowledgeable. I started following you after the purchase of my terminator x. You were very helpful in several tuning points. I do have a question for you. I have a 5.7 ls6 at 12 to 1 and a comp 54 602 11 cam. Just wondering if you think I can get 430 to the wheels on 93 octane?
Hey Joe, I'm building a rear turbo 98 camaro, I'm still need to swap ls1 for a new ls2 6.0 new build. I'm probably about a year away to get the engine in the car running N.A. then I need to get the piping played out for the rear turbo. I was going to run dual 2.5 in pipe the rear turbo and then run 3 in all the way up front see if I can get oval pipe to get it underneath the car should be interesting but you should 10 ' s in the 1/4 in Albuquerque New Mexico
Awesome video I like your videos it's helped me a lot with my tuning but I'm only street tuning as where I live we don't have any Dynos and now I'm thinking about picking myself up a Terminator x for my next project thank you once again for all the great videos. Mike Cormack
Hey! From India! Currently designing a turbo kit for Harley Davidson motorcycle! Loved the video. I don't have a dyno, however I also start with low timing, like 1deg per psi. Then road tune the acceleration with 2deg increments. Acceleration values and knock sensor events from log is how I do it. And i agree same set up on different engines responds differently to timing! Always wondered why is that, may be ring gap, or something else
Yup for sure. I have a lot of people that will rent my dyno and never even touch the timing. It’s interesting to watch how other people go about their processes
@@JoeSimpsonAtTempest I have heard both sides on knock sensors. And from what I have gathered knock sensors work good if you are factory computer/car because they are tuned for the car, but for holley they can be tuned but it seems difficult to trust. Maybe a future topic but would be interested in your opinion on the value of knock detection and specifically on holley.
@@Nickyb801 yes knock sensors do more harm that good for most people when not in a factory ecu. That’s a tough one to cover as a lot of experience is involved. And in my opinion, still requires a dyno - it’s more of a keep it safe after the fact type of thing. I know others may view it a bit different but that’s my take on it
I had no idea you could make blanket settings in the timing table like this, I’m glad I found your channel, I have recently setup my sbe 5.3 turbo with term x, I’m in New Zealand.
@@JoeSimpsonAtTempest Thanks I’m a real beginner and learning a lot. Car runs great as far as I can tell, having a lot of trouble with hot and cold starts.
From Hamilton Ontario Canada. trying to cram as much info into my brain before going term x max on my l92/4l80e swap that's getting a t6 s480 next year.
hi, interesting (writing from Germany). Are you talking about „Distributor/Cam“ degrees or Crankshaft degrees because I have done 2 old Jaguars (no Turbo of course) and came out at 38 crank (19 cam angle degrees). Just to compare numbers. thanks Bernhard
Joe Simpson I’m looking to bring my turbo sbf foxbody in for some tuning within the next couple of months. I’m running a precision 7675 with built motor, alum heads, etc.
Good stuff man. How do you like the cast stuff vs the billet cnc collectors? I’ve been using the street car fab ones lately and really like em. Haven’t had a chance to try out a cast unit. Texarkana, TX/AR
the difference between cast and billet isnt any different as far as that goes. the design beetween the street car stuff and the sequence stuff is much different. the street car stuff is nice but i like the design of the sequence stuff better.
Looks great, how much more timing do you think that setup would have taken on e85 and what do you typically see for gains? Central US here, corn fuel everywhere.
The turbo cars don’t seem to take as much additional timing from 93 to e85 as the blower cars. I think the last one i did didn’t take much additional at all. Picked up like 70 hp on the gate from just switching fuel and a couple degrees extra
I see you’re located in Virginia! I have a 4.8 with a Gen 2 7875. Been 9.30s @ 147 with a 1.42 60 ft. I just need someone to tune it above 20# and clean up the tune. It’s been together for 3 years and I tune it myself. I know there is a lot left in the tune
@@JoeSimpsonAtTempest I’m in Richmond va. I looked up your shop. It says you’re about 2 hours away. My car has the ms3 gold box. Would that be an issue?
Great vid, Joe! I would like your thoughts on reducing timing at peak torque/overall timing curve on a well set up max effort SBE LS deal. Mine is a 5.3 on E85, FI S491/102, TFS 220's, PTC converter, LJMS valvetrain set up for 8300rpm shift points, all in a 3400# '67 Camaro looking to go low 8's. Do I just leave the timing at 12-14° and crank the boost up to 35psi, or should I get a little more aggressive with the timing? Thanks man!
thats a tough one, as every one is different. thats why i encourage putting every car on a dyno. even the guys that just track tune their stuff always see benefits when they break down and finally put it on a dyno!
@@JoeSimpsonAtTempest Just wanted to say love your video's and all the info you put out to all of us wanting to learn. I know every car and engine is different and there is no real specific answer, but can you go over mike's ^^^^^ question above if we were to have on a dyno how would we go about tuning timing in not just the WOT area but in the peak cylinder pressure area's? In the video you just change timing from 0-wot rpm... would be another part 2 to this video if you could show this
i enjoy my meme in the beginning, we've all been there as dyno operators lol
i guess it makes sense that was yours! i think i saw in in a group chat. thats a good one!
one of the smartest guys out there . don’t let the humility fool you .

What would be the recommended way of tuning. I see a lot of tuners have a flat timing graph. I thought timing would increase with rpm
