I like that the British merchant helped them. Just a short time before the USA and Britain had been at war but he was able to put aside the petty differences of nations. He simply saw people who needed his help.

More recently(than this story at least) was when the air traffic of the main airport on the Canaries had been diverted because of a terrorist threat and the combination of thick fog, inexperienced ATC, irritated pilots because of the delays, and small airport/runways led to the worst air disaster in history.
These older stories, I appreciate more than the newer ones. The situations and circumstances the people back then had to go through was just incredibly, absurdly, difficult and heartbreaking. In this story in particular, more importantly, it wasn't just an extraordinary survival story, it also changed the course of history ❤ Thank you for continuing to shed light on these lost forgotten true tales, and the people who struggled through, and survived, their insurmountable odds. ❤

Hi! I have a story suggestion, it's kind of a tearjerker. It's about the Third Man Factor -- where people in survival situations kind of dissociate and imagine/project another person with them, encouraging them and being beside them. Stephanie Schwabe is a scientist and cave diver whose husband, also a cave diver, had died. While exploring a cave in the Bahamas to collect samples, she lost track of her guide rope and became lost. She thought she was going to die, when she experienced the third man factor of her husband appearing beside her and helping to guide her out. It's a really cool story, and the third man phenomenon is a pretty interesting topic in general. They don't really know what causes it. I think it sounds kind of similar to what people with DID go through, where a different internal personality takes over in a traumatic situation, and the original personality either doesn't remember or feels like they're an onlooker in their own head. Except this is temporary and externalized. It's really neat
Wasn't there a movie based on this type of experience a young woman had after an accident at sea. She imagined the presence of her boyfriend, I think that Shailene Woodley acted in it. Based on true events.
The subconscious part of the brain is always working away without you much noticing until those moments it provides an answer to your conscious brain. It's pretty amazing and, sometimes, a bit eerie. Such as listening to radio music and suddenly knowing what the next song is before it plays, as an example. The station programming would only have a specific set of songs in their current playlist and would play a block of them at a time. The subconscious would silently learn a certain combined string and eventually deduct what's next from that combination of specific songs. It's also why you suddenly remember something you had been trying to recall earlier. Such as trying to remember a name which you've certainly know in the past, but have trouble doing so in the moment. Just consciously ask yourself the question three times, "what was the name of ...?", then go back to what you were doing before without worrying about it anymore. It often pops right into your head minutes later while you're in the middle of doing other things. Try it sometime. The gears are always grinding behind the curtain. I think that subconscious side of the brain, the one with more information & rational processing capability, can take over a more active role when in panicked situations such as that. The side effects being a good rational answer popping into your head and your conscious brain having to explain it all to your senses in some way. Which can possibly end up resembling a supernatural occurrence.
Proof that nonfiction and history don’t care about how possible or believable it is! And that little tidbit of inspiring a certain abolitionists blew my mind man.
What's scary about this story is that what happened to James and his men can still happen today in that region of Africa. Oh sure, modern technology allows for the ability to call for help just about anywhere on the surface of the world, but this technology can easily be broken, go missing, or otherwise be unable to send a signal. On top of that, even if one can successfully signal for rescue, it still takes most of a day if one is super-lucky or days to get to that area depending on the method of transportation and it's still enough time for any number of things to happen. Finally, the nomadic tribes mentioned in this article still exist in that area of the Sahara desert and are still just as likely today to enslave or kill anyone they find, whether it's one of their own or a foreigner. It is very easy to take the technology and customs of modern society for granted.
@@kkdakh4n450 Go to a poor third world country as a clear foreigner with no transportation and nowhere private to stay and prove them wrong. You'll be robbed or mugged of the few thing you do have as soon as you blink, specially your valuable phone. You won't know the language, and you'll be at everyone you meet's mercy to not have evil intentions. Don't think it can't spiral out of your control fast, even in wait if your country is coming for rescue. This occasionally happens to tourists and press, and it takes over a year just to facilitate their return, if they even survive.

Meanwhile the USA fought a civil war to free the slaves, something white Christians likewise got zero credit for doing.

Skeletons on the Zahara is a great book about this although if memory serves, some of the details are slightly different. Captain really was an honorable man but also honest about his own failings. In his memoirs he admitted to stealing some water from the canteen of one of his sleeping men.
My heart was relieved after hearing the final minutes of the story. James and his men fought a hostile ocean, hostile men, a hostile desert, and even slavery. His strong will to save himself and his crew was more than enough to touch the hearts of us viewers. I'm glad they got to have a good ending in a story full of suffering.
Why did the crew of that ship not have ANY weapons whatsoever with which to defend themselves??? And yes, the Muslim slave trade was the most brutal, large-scale, longest lasting slave trade in the history of the world, and the most costly in terms of human lives.

What an absolutely mad story. Its incredible that after surviving they still went back into the desert to look for others. What an absolutely horrifying group of men sailing the high sands back then.
As a sailor with thousands of hours at sea, I can tell you that your story telling is exceptional. Without going into my own experiences (of which there are many) I can tell you that your descriptions of being at sea and dragging anchor near shore are very true to life. On the note of slavery. The arab people took slaves from Africa before Europeans did. They stopped later than Europeans did. And they took slaves from Europe for over 300 years, of which the consequence was the first crusade.
During the Caliphate where Arabs invaded Europe they also intentionally destroyed much of the architecture and art. It's how so much artwork is stored in Britain, they bought as much as they could off the Arabs to stop it from being destroyed.

It's about the Third Man Factor -- where people in survival situations kind of dissociate and imagine/project another person with them, encouraging them and being beside them. Stephanie Schwabe is a scientist and cave diver whose husband, also a cave diver, had died. While exploring a cave in the Bahamas to collect samples, she lost track of her guide rope and became lost. She thought she was going to die, when she experienced the third man factor of her husband appearing beside her and helping to guide her out. It's a really cool story, and the third man phenomenon is a pretty interesting topic in general. They don't really know what causes it. I think it sounds kind of similar to what people with DID go through, where a different internal personality takes over in a traumatic situation, and the original personality either doesn't remember or feels like they're an onlooker in their own head. Except this is temporary and externalized. It's really neat
Wasn't there a movie based on this type of experience a young woman had after an accident at sea. She imagined the presence of her boyfriend, I think that Shailene Woodley acted in it. Based on true events.

The subconscious part of the brain is always working away without you much noticing until those moments it provides an answer to your conscious brain. It's pretty amazing and, sometimes, a bit eerie. Such as listening to radio music and suddenly knowing what the next song is before it plays, as an example. The station programming would only have a specific set of songs in their current playlist and would play a block of them at a time. The subconscious would silently learn a certain combined string and eventually deduct what's next from that combination of specific songs. It's also why you suddenly remember something you had been trying to recall earlier. Such as trying to remember a name which you've certainly know in the past, but have trouble doing so in the moment. Just consciously ask yourself the question three times, "what was the name of ...?", then go back to what you were doing before without worrying about it anymore. It often pops right into your head minutes later while you're in the middle of doing other things. Try it sometime. The gears are always grinding behind the curtain.
I think that subconscious side of the brain, the one with more information & rational processing capability, can take over a more active role when in panicked situations such as that. The side effects being a good rational answer popping into your head and your conscious brain having to explain it all to your senses in some way. Which can possibly end up resembling a supernatural occurrence.
Proof that nonfiction and history don’t care about how possible or believable it is! And that little tidbit of inspiring a certain abolitionists blew my mind man.

What's scary about this story is that what happened to James and his men can still happen today in that region of Africa. Oh sure, modern technology allows for the ability to call for help just about anywhere on the surface of the world, but this technology can easily be broken, go missing, or otherwise be unable to send a signal. On top of that, even if one can successfully signal for rescue, it still takes most of a day if one is super-lucky or days to get to that area depending on the method of transportation and it's still enough time for any number of things to happen. Finally, the nomadic tribes mentioned in this article still exist in that area of the Sahara desert and are still just as likely today to enslave or kill anyone they find, whether it's one of their own or a foreigner. It is very easy to take the technology and customs of modern society for granted.

You'll be robbed or mugged of the few thing you do have as soon as you blink, specially your valuable phone. You won't know the language, and you'll be at everyone you meet's mercy to not have evil intentions. Don't think it can't spiral out of your control fast, even in wait if your country is coming for rescue. This occasionally happens to tourists and press, and it takes over a year just to facilitate their return, if they even survive.

There is one (of sorts) that I'm playing it now actually. It's a survival game called The Pale Beyond. It's on Steam/GoG for both PC & Mac. Interesting so far, especially when you put you own thoughts of the horrors of being shipwrecked. This one they are wrecked in ice. Hope you enjoy if you end up checking it out. Might not be everyone's cup of tea, but figured I'd mention it.

Meanwhile the USA fought a civil war to free the slaves, something white Christians likewise got zero credit for doing.
The film would have to portray Muslims/Africans as slavers. Never gonna happen. In hollywood only white people can be slavers.

Right you'll work yourself to death in a hurry. Maybe my dainish genes aren't the best for heat but I've dropped like a rock in 35° weather after a few hours of hard but not forced work plus I had water and a vehicle with ac to cool of in.

Not everyone was that smart or educated at all back then. They did the best they could considering the circumstances.

Skeletons on the Zahara is a great book about this although if memory serves, some of the details are slightly different. Captain really was an honorable man but also honest about his own failings. In his memoirs he admitted to stealing some water from the canteen of one of his sleeping men.
My heart was relieved after hearing the final minutes of the story. James and his men fought a hostile ocean, hostile men, a hostile desert, and even slavery.
His strong will to save himself and his crew was more than enough to touch the hearts of us viewers. I'm glad they got to have a good ending in a story full of suffering.

The Atlantic slave trade was the biggest in history. I couldn’t find any source that puts the number on the Muslim slave trade over 10-12 million. Could you?

On the note of slavery. The arab people took slaves from Africa before Europeans did. They stopped later than Europeans did.
And they took slaves from Europe for over 300 years, of which the consequence was the first crusade.
During the Caliphate where Arabs invaded Europe they also intentionally destroyed much of the architecture and art. It's how so much artwork is stored in Britain, they bought as much as they could off the Arabs to stop it from being destroyed.
