For me, the weak point in the story is moving the sleeping boxcar clerk into another car (without waking him). This doesn't ring true. This would have been more plausible if someone brought him the sandwiches and drugged his tea. Maybe putting some lemon in the tea to mask any noticible taste. This way, they could have planned on moving him with confidence.
