  • I take a stand in support of the "touch up" and at the end of video show the proof on camera and clearly explain why.
    Razor: Razorock BBS standard
    Blade: Astra Green
    Soap: Dayman by Declaration Grooming
    Brush: Yaqi Moka Synthetic
    Balm: Prorasso Greentea and Oat
Although there are many kinds of "Touch Ups" from painting and more... this is about technique and the importance of the touch up and refining one's shave to get the result they want. Ultimately people should do what works for themselves and ignore the peanut gallery. You do you best and all power to you!

I'm glad to have just found your channel! You offer a lot of great information and insight (and are wise to the "ways" of shaving forums). I prefer my milder razor (RR GC .68) for daily shaves, otherwise my '31 Gillett Goodwill. I tend to do the usual 3 passes (though sometimes bypass the north-south pass) with touchups. With my touch ups I get in there with my fingers and guide it all by feel. Would be interested to hear your views on buffing. I look forward to seeing more of your videos.

Great video!!!!!!! For me I love a mild razor with a derby and I do 4 pass shave it's to enjoyable and anxiety releasing lot wet shavers say you have to have a r41 I'm good with what I like and that's all that matters

That's terrific and I support you 100%. Do what works for you. An enjoyable 4 pass shave can also yield better results than some aggressive razors as well. Also I love your description of anxiety releasing!
Men trying to do the whole competitive "one up manship" is ridiculous but not unexpected, I've also had comments on the channel about the r41 which I'd love to try as that's my thing (trying new razors and products) but I'm in no rush or need of it.
I felt this video was a long time in the making and really needed to done to set the record straight and have someone speak the truth or at least reinforce it. I'm so glad it hit the mark!

I have no idea who is saying you can’t do cleanup, but they are full of the proverbial equine feces. Everyone’s face is different. Different whiskers, different skin, different levels of proficiency. So it stands to reason that it is truly different strokes for different folks. When I was your age, my beard was dark and coarse and required a lot of work like yours does. Now that I’m older, it’s all white and I can get by with not shaving for two or three days and no one notices. I still know that I haven’t shaved and I still feel like a bum, so I don’t skip a shave unless I’m letting my skin rest. At my age the skin gets thin and can’t take that daily abuse. Great video mate, and good for you for calling out the BS Artists.

100% right! The main reason for the video is that I really want other men to feel good about enjoying their shave and doing whatever works for them. Obviously some other men are competitive and boastful, and I think this presents a very negative influence and peer pressure for some to purchase and use razors that are far too aggressive for their faces and they end up cutting up their faces or hating shaving sadly and moving back to cartridges.
These guys who are easily influenced to purchase aggressive safety razors and blades often end up hating safety razors and I've received comments from them saying how they wasted money and should have stuck to cartridges instead and how they hated the experience.
In fact I've purchased several second hand razors from different people face to face who have said this exact thing and not just on forums come to think about it. Not all razors or blades are equal, faces or proficiency as you mentioned and this is why it's important to get the truth out there.
Thank you for sharing as I think it's helpful for others reading the comments to know there is a strong supportive force for them as the internet can present all types opinions and some of those who are loud aren't right.

Excellent topic and quite relevant to me as I prefer mild razors for my daily shave. A mild razor allows me to buff w/o irritation. During my clean-up rinse, I feel for areas which could be closer, then I gently go over those ATG (against the grain) with a seperate, more aggressive razor (or aggressive setting with an adjustable). This technique and process works for my wiry beard/sensitive skin combo and daily shave regiment. If I use an aggressive razor straight away, my face will definitely throw me into the penalty box - no can do. For me. an aggressive razor does the trick only for clean-up, but the mild razors carry the shave for me. Additionally, I will pre-wash my face with a warm salt water mix and a drop of hair conditioner, this softens and prepares the skin and hair for the coming drama. I always follow with post-shave coconut oil.

Wonderful and thank you for sharing! I really think it's great that you've developed your technique and refined it to do what works for you. I absolutely can see why you choose a mild razor and then shift to a more aggressive buff for the clean up... aka "touch up".
Aggressive razors aren't always the best even with the lightest of touch especially with very sensitive skin. Some guys can shave with them for a day without issue but not on two consecutive days as they can cause great abrasion to the skin. I've also seen some guys cut up their faces just so they can say they use a more aggressive razor.
The salt water with a drop of conditioner as a preshave is interesting. I've never tried conditioner as a pre-shave and heard of some guys using it in the shower beforehand as well.
I think this topic of the "touch up/clean up" is pretty important when chasing that awesome shave and the mild razors are great for sensitive skin. Glad you enjoyed this video and thank you for the support!

Like u said 'what works 4 me'.. I only use mild razors with really sharp blades (feather / Kai / premasharp / etc..) + really slick soaps (B&M / Stirling / etc..
Anyway great (as usual) video 👍👍👍

Oh, then I still have time to shave well. I only started a month or two ago. But what I already know. That there are big differences between the razor blades, e.g. you don't like the Astra Green at all. My current favorite is Rapira Platinum Lux.

That's great! Know what combination works. There are some razors and blades that simply don't work for me not matter which combination I try. But there are also great pairings of razors and blades that work best together. I can say that duller blades can work better in more aggressive razors and vice versa.

Take out the KOH and NaOH and you could eat that soap! How did you go with the shavette, did you need to do so many touch ups?

    • @dailyshaves7242
      @dailyshaves7242  3 года назад +2

Lots of edible ingredients in that soap for sure! Great scent too.
The "touch up" is more useful on mild razors. And yes for a shavette, it depends on what kind of shave I am go for, if it's full on BBS it does require "touch up" but let me explain....the terminology is important and definition... for me a BBS is smoothness against the grain with little "raspiness" when felt with fingers against the grain. As I have hair that grows in different directions, it requires cutting the hair against the grain so multiple strokes in different directions, hence the reason why for "directional passes"... I certainly can get a DFS with 2 passes with that detailed work.
A lot of men I assume do their detailed "touch up" during a pass, with is what we tend to intuitively do. Thus doing strokes in different directions during a pass which is that extra attention aside from a basic North-South, East-West.
Aggressive razors unless used carefully might not end up giving a better quality shave at all. In fact that's a good topic for another video!
