Intuitive eating has saved me. Stuck in a cycle of restricting and binging for years. Then i started listening to my body, bite by bite. I don’t constantly think about food anymore, I eat what feels nurishing to me, I cycle track too. I’ve been healing, and losing weight in the process, but that’s not my main focus. Next up is healing my relationship w exercise lol!

Thank you so much for this episode. Many LGBTQ individuals have grown up with very little real-life representations. Most representations come from the media, which is known for homogeneous & unrealistic beauty standards. Not to mention the popular 'melancholic skinny youth' trope prevalent in LGBTQ media. When this is the main source of representation we grow up with, we feel so much more pressure to succumb to these standards.

Susan Powter was spreading this message years ago and it's a good one. Only when I "let go" and just stopped worrying about it did I lose my food issues and become happy.

Can’t lie as soon as I came out, I definitely made sure to look “good” because it’s hard to be ugly, not fit, and gay.

13:45 over 90% of ppl with eating disorders fall under the “atypical” description. (The diagnostic criteria are pretty messed up in part bc EDs predominantly affect ppl in multi-marginalized bodies, e.g. women, POC, etc., and the DSM was written largely by men.)

It took me 6 years to lose 65lbs. The first two years i focused on working out. The second two years i focused on my sleeping. Then i plateaued for a year. This past year i havent been depressed and ive been sleeping more and my body is dropping pounds atm.

44:30 so true😂After the second pizza I'm like nah I'm good. Where's the greens 🥗? It's so about diminished returns. 44:35 "Are we actually atuned to what we want and need?" Such a good question, cause the lines can be blurred based on societal pressures. This was great episode to end the season. Have a great vacation. Y'all deserve it. I appreciate the team and this podcast. Looking forward to 2025 for even more insightful conversations with the Community.❤🏳️‍🌈

I absolutely agree with this, but I also believe that there is moral value in where food comes from.
Like every day factory farming is wrong. We should look for a recovery that is not only kind to us but also others.

Ok, so I’ve been working with nutritionists to lose weight and it’s not going very well. I have lost a little weight but their suggestions for how to alter my diet just make me sad. I cannot be satisfied with a snack of chalky chickpeas or a breakfast of cottage cheese. Eating a salad is actually something I like, but then they want me to get rid of the tasty salad dressing and use something “healthier” that will not taste nearly as good. Texture is SO important to me as an autistic person. Taste is also really important. I’d rather eat less of something I like rather than more of something unappetizing. Also, my ideal weight is 220lbs and when I mention that to my nutritionists their response is something like, oh don’t sell yourself short! You can lose more weight than that! But I don’t want to. That’s how I want to look. My body type, especially because I’m actually very bony with big hipbones, looks best with some softness in my opinion, and I think my opinion matters a lot in this case. I’m going to switch over to intuitive eating, which I’ve already been doing on some level but I could definitely use some guidance. One thing I’ve found very useful is (on top of trying to identify what I’m actually wanting) I only eat until I’m almost satisfied, then sit with that for 15-20 min, and then have a few more bites if I am still hungry. This has reduced the amount of food I end up eating at a meal by probably 40%, which is huge. Before this, I’d eat until I felt completely satisfied and then end up realizing that I ate too much once my satiation hormones caught up with the amount of calories I ate. I do end up eating a bit more frequently because my meals don’t keep me full as long, but I am still eating less overall and have more consistent energy. These are things I had to introduce to the conversation and luckily my nutritionist is on board with it, but she still wants me to switch over to eating sadness instead of the delicious foods I enjoy.

Maybe I was born broken… lol my mom said I would drink milk til I would vomit as an infant in a way my sister didn’t. Like I would just keep going. She also used weed when pregnant with me and I ended up an addict… so maybe I was born with those tendencies?

I think this is super interesting. For some background: I had to do a lot of work on body neutrality for diet culture reasons (unlearning weight bias, accepting my body); but when I started dating my current partner (first gay relationship, first time dating someone in a larger body), my therapist pointed out that there’s a legitimate difference between (on the one hand) deconstructing fatphobia and (on the other) having certain dating/romantic preferences… I.e. Just because you aren’t fatphobic in your belief system does not mean you are equally attracted to all body types. So, when Liza talks about fat women having no Tinder matches, that is not *necessarily* because the queer community is fatphobic.

Hmmm. I love this podcast but this is not very good. Doritos? That is actual addiction. Crisps/chips = addiction. You need to detox if you’re “intuitively eating” Doritos! Not all food is good food. Some food does belong in the trash!! Read Ultra Processed People. That will get you on the right track. Sorry but taking food advice from Americans is crazy. Ask a European, please!
