Yep. In all honesty, I didn't even think the disk was gonna work, due to the mechanical failures it was giving me before I filmed this episode. But regardless, I should've made a clone, and not formatted the original disk. The Curse was extra harsh on me. I'll get it next time…
Thats right, every time I worked on a screwed drive, I always take a clone of it with ddrescue, and work with the clone. Almost every single time all the data got successfully rescued :)
My theory is that the computer store connected the drive to their computers. Windows went "You can't use this disk unless you format it" because it didn't support the filesystem and the stupid techs actually went ahead and formatted the damn thing
Oh well, not surprising, and this pisses me off really. You take your thing to them to fix it but then you will find out that they are dumber than you.
If any artists could do a GameGrumpsAnimated or RoosterTeethAnimatedAdventures type thing I think it could fit decently well with Krazy Ken's Tech Misadventures
I would have suggested using linux as opposed to macos because while it is a macOS hard drive, you could virtually mount it in linux and run some recovery software on linux. Alternatively, while I haven't tested it yet, you might be able to take a failing hard drive in linux, keeping it virtually mounted, and DD it to another drive that's working, such as the 1tb drive that you extracted from your firewire/usb external drive. DDing would use the terminal and would need the drive would require the drive letter and not the drive name. The drive letter can be found from gparted or running sudo fdisk -l in terminal and it will tell you the connected storage locations. The go-to template that I use for dding drives is sudo dd if=/dev/sdx (replace x with the drive letter found in GParted or sudo fdisk -l) of=/dev/sdx (same thing here, but with the output drive) status=progress. If you'd like, hit me up in twitter dm's (@yoshithemajor) and I can help you with maybe a part two to this, that is if you can get the drive again.
Try a new USB Adapter, that one seems to be kinda bad... Also, get a USB 3.0 one, not a 2.0, can deliver more than just 500mA to the drive which it may actually need.
The fact that it had an MBR on it with no partitions in the beginning means that "random tech store" accidentally wiped the partition table and potentially formatted it. Disk utility will always suggest GUID unless there is already a MBR present, and apple has never used MBR. But that disk is also trashed, made obvious by the clicking and forced ejects.
Tip: Always make a raw dump of a hard drive to be rescued. Then make a copy of that dump file to work with. That way one can always revert back to the "original state" when experimenting with various rescue tools. More often than not, one don't have many chances reading the hard drive before total failure.
That chirping sound in combination with the uneven sound when the drive slows down strongly points towards a seized spindle motor. It can have other reasons like insufficient power delivery (which can be checked pretty easily by removing the screws and using the USB3 dock) or a stiction fault. Also, it wasn’t the best idea to write on the broken drive.
or as someone else already said, the techs repairing the computer were so stupid that they plugged in the HDD into a Windows PC, Windows told them "YoU cAnT uSe ThIs DiSc UnLeSs YoU fOrMaT iT" so they formatted it, and it broke somehow
Lmao yeah... like someone else said, you really shouldn't have made any changes to the drive, nonetheless formatted it with a new partition. It may have still been possible to recover the data with a utility like TestDisk, which has saved my ass a ton of times even with corrupted file systems.
I have these issues when I bought a new 320 GB 2.5 inch hard drive, it sounds exactly just like that, but I tried giving it more power since my SATA to USB converter has 2 USB ports, tried connecting it into my phone charger and it works
Don't you just love it when your HDD fails? My WD Blue 250GB just failed a few days ago; for no reason after formatting it twice. Reallocated Sector count was off a bit, and caused so many issues it ended up failing.
I cringed watching this. BUT this is not a failed video, Computer Clan. This is a learning experience, thanks to you others who see this may learn from it as well :-) I find your videos entertaining. Please do keep making them. Good luck Ken on Many more Fun and Exciting Computer Adventures !!!
ALWAYS image a corrupted hard drive before trying to work on THE IMAGE NOT THE ORIGIONAL. That way if you cant recover you can send to someone like drivesavers
I recommend just purchasing the licence for the recovery software. I use EaseUS and for a single licence the price was reasonable. Saved 4TB worth of data for me.
I once used Gnome disk utility to create a disk image of a failing external hard drive. It worked pretty well, though not all the files made it, and the imaging process took several hours.
Before any attempt at data recovery try to clone the drive. Then make a back of the clone. Then do your data recovery off of the clone. This is recommend for any one trying to recovery a formatted drive. Not only quicker but also less likely to fail. If the drive does work of course.
Lol when your windows 10 pc hard drive is maybe corrupted or has a virus so it bsod’d itself like 1083673 times and then went into automatic repair and you couldnt repair it and your a child tech person so you tried command prompting it and it still didn’t work and then you thought it was screwed so you messed around with it and it said that your hard drive had to be replaced but your replacement part warranty ran out in October.. Lol relatable :(
Oh hey, I also have one of those (HTS547575A9E38) that shows the exact same symptoms, mine's only been used with Windows machines and just stopped working one day so I can say with confidence that it's a drive failure
All of the videos of yours I have watched thus far have been very entertaining and they have made my day much better with a healthy dose of humor. Thank you much and keep them coming!
Are you sure? I can’t recall being able to use HFS+ volumes on Linux distros. There’s probably some magical software out there, but just saying ‘Linux’ is not specific enough. Linux is a kernel.
Computer Clan yeah, it just needs drivers for those volume types, and icr if there is any data recovery tools for Linux, but i'm sure there are some: though I can't assure you of the quality.
Computer Clan Any version would work well - install something like Ubuntu 18.04 on a USB drive or on a separate partition (this way is 100x faster), install HFS+ drivers for rw and you'll be happy go lucky.
You should not have kept turning it off and on again, it sounds like its possible the read head is contacting and is damaging the platters as you keep on trying.
First things first. This USB adapter is basically not getting enough current to keep the disk spinning. He should have used the 2xUSB to miniUSB cable. This way more current would be provided. Also that format was not a good idea. Of course the data recovery software would recover some of the data, but definitely it won't be a 1:1 copy. Not even close to that type of recovery.
dont you want to rune something like redo first to make a complet copy of the drive. and than scan blocks for files? so you don't stress the disk more than needed?
Dont worry, give it a few more years and you wont have to worry about fixing hard drives on macs, since Apple will no doubt remove support for them from macOS, since they are "old" and outdated. Like 32bit apps (lets ignore all the old applications that will no longer work)! And OpenGL (even thought thats Apples fault for not keeping the OpenGL drivers on macOS up to date!) And OpenCL because they want to push proprietary over open standards. And not support Vulkan because Metal exists and obviously proprietary >>> open. When did Apple turn into MS?
Microsoft has far more support than that. You can even run 16-bit programs on Windows 10 32-bit (may require installing some software, but running with the native OS not Dosbox). Same Intel based executables, classic Windows API still there...
This might sound weird, but whenever I have to check if a drive is working I also use a doctor's sthetoscope (you know, the chest hearing instrument) to make sure everything is clicking if the drive does not appear on the browser or drive list etc.
Hi the Generic tech probably used the wrong software to get the data of the drive. Two years ago a friend asked me to convert an external HDD so he could transfer the data for his macbook Pro. Now the data was originally from a PC. Now if you use the wrong software in the first place you will destroy the data. In my case The client paid for the data recovery and transfers (conversion). But I did made him a copy/backup of the hdd in NTFS in case he wanted to have it again on a PC and with the external drive I reformated the drive to Apple disk structure. In your case the Tech probably never seen an Apple formatted HDD so he made the assumption that it could the same as a PC formatted drive and he screwed the drive. And the other option he dropped the drive while attempting to remove these screws. That's what happens when a tech that does not know anything try to wing it, instead of asking help or to get the info to avoid destroying the data.
Oops, should've imaged it first... But the drive was bad anyway, so not much could've been done. Speaking of which, I lost one the day this video was uploaded! How coincedental
We're happy to have you around. We have another Krazy Ken coming up on Thursday, and we're gearing up to release a brand new tech show, so stick around. ; )
WHY WOULD YOU ERASE THE DRIVE FOR RECOVERING DATA?!?!! It doesn't matter what the computer say just don't modify anything and run the recovery software! (alright now i'm gonna go watch something else to calm myself down)
.flac files are audio files just put in a different file extension. A good example of what uses .flac files are games. An example would be Call of Duty: Black Ops III.
In moments like those I allways copy the Hard drive directly so if the HDD is defective at least the data cant get any more corupted then it allready is
Computer Clan yeah understandable and you probably have a lot more experience then me but at least for me I had luck because everytime such a hard drive spins up the failure rate gets greater and what I use in moments when the computer is ejecting the disk is that I plug it into a sata port ( I know the laptop isnt usable like this ) but this way it can "eject" fhe disk ! Anyways great video as allways !
7:18 my HDD is making same sounds but it didn't corrupt my data. EDIT: Problem was only connection. Plug was full of dust and could not make a good contact, now it's fixed.
so smart by creating new partitions ;.. just by doing that you fucked up another XXX files for recovery ... one big main rule when recovering (or trying to): NEVER WRITE ANYTHING to the disk you try to recover, as that means you're overwriting existing data you're going to try to recover, and once overwritten it's GONE forever... so the partitioning was a big NONO (also, the fact that the disk was initialised with mbr doesn't really mean anything... it could be done for out of the box dualbooting to windows. freebsd/unix (what macos actually is) has no problem running mbr disks... In my opinion? the guys from the store that initially tried to recover either dropped the disk on the floor OR they just swapped it with another broken disk (hence the MBR 'mac os' could be explained by this, as they'd probably tried to make it look like a mac disk or just emptied the partition info to mke it look empty ...) anyways, you should go back to the store and ask why they tampered with the filesys and why the disk suddenly was broken.
Honestly I don't blame the tech store. In the general public you really don't see apple computers that often. I know I work in tech and I will NOT touch any apple device. They simply make it too difficult to work on their products. I have the knowhow, I just on principle will not support a company as bad as apple. Also, why did you create a partition as the first thing? You NEVER change a drive you want to recover data from. That alone may have doomed your attempt. I'd mount it in a Linux environment and start there. just DD the whole drive.

I think it's called "Used to Say" from JinglePunks
Computer Clan for some reason I looked everywhere for the past 10-15 mins and I can’t find it.
You wouldn’t find any files in the recovery Partition
Rule #1 of data recovery: do NOT format the drive, unless you have exhausted every possible way of reading it.

The irony about the generic tech store is that theyre actually the LEAST tech savvy folks in the community.
Krazy Ken's Tech Misadventures is best anime.
Change my mind.
xX_SpeedyScout_Xx Right!!!!
Mlp and spongebob are better
If any artists could do a GameGrumpsAnimated or RoosterTeethAnimatedAdventures type thing I think it could fit decently well with Krazy Ken's Tech Misadventures
we all know anime is generally bad

I'd like to see the anime-style intro/outro for Krazy Ken's Tech Misadventures in the next episode. Let's make it happen!

wow... you try to recover data by wiping the drive first...
Pretty genius, right? : s
But remember, I formatted the disk. I didn’t truly erase the bits.
But then it would still be smarter to use a program like testdisk/photorec to recover the original partition table.

This might sound weird, but whenever I have to check if a drive is working I also use a doctor's sthetoscope (you know, the chest hearing instrument) to make sure everything is clicking if the drive does not appear on the browser or drive list etc.
You are now a *HDDoc*
smart tho
(2:08) Holy (beep) what the drive toaster?! Are you trying to cook that HDD (or SSD?) to eat?!
Hi the Generic tech probably used the wrong software to get the data of the drive. Two years ago a friend asked me to convert an external HDD so he could transfer the data for his macbook Pro. I once had a corrupted disk that prevented an old computer from booting, it would get stuck at the bios screen and lock up.
Looks like the Mac was repartitioned and setup for a linux distro?
Unless you're trying to salvage the HDD clone the drive and work on the clone
I think that Generic Tech Store broke the hard drive while removing it from computer.
As ken says as the pro version is $2.99 he makes it sound like a lot of money
Or ya know... use pliers to loosen the screws and remove them.
@ 17:59 Krazy Ken turns into Vargskelethor Joel

We're happy to have you around. We have another Krazy Ken coming up on Thursday, and we're gearing up to release a brand new tech show, so stick around. ; )

WHY WOULD YOU ERASE THE DRIVE FOR RECOVERING DATA?!?!! It doesn't matter what the computer say just don't modify anything and run the recovery software! (alright now i'm gonna go watch something else to calm myself down)

The reality is the Difficulty is 8/10
Im not saying 10/10 because if it we're then it would be Impossible and you've made it Significantly worse

In my opinion? the guys from the store that initially tried to recover either dropped the disk on the floor OR they just swapped it with another broken disk (hence the MBR 'mac os' could be explained by this, as they'd probably tried to make it look like a mac disk or just emptied the partition info to mke it look empty ...)
anyways, you should go back to the store and ask why they tampered with the filesys and why the disk suddenly was broken.
