At the end of the day it depends on the needs of the Air Force if your approved or not Other factors: the retraining advisory list on mypers could have no open positions for the job you want, keep that in mind You could do everything right and submit it on mypers in your window, if the asshats at mypers/AETC don’t do their job you could not receive a update of your status for months(wasting time) Mypers could still do their job and you won’t get approved, with no feedback as to why
The Air Force has changed the policy in 2024 so now there is no end date on your window (even with extension) as long as you’re a FTA you’ll be good to go. Currently in the process rn 🎉
I was told by my recruiter you can cross train half way through your contract.. I’m about half way through so I can’t retrain until my 5th year?? Other Airman were under the same impression that we could cross train half way through our contracts. That’s crazy.
Do you know the probability of OSI being on the list for cross training? Or maybe how often it was on the list in the past? That’s the only cross training afsc I’m interested in. I know it’s very competitive for one so I figured it would most likely never be available? I haven’t checked MyPers though, but I definitely am tomorrow.
I’m looking for a combat job. CCT is my ultimate goal. Is there many combat area Air Force jobs? I know I’m not gonna pass PT for CCT currently, but enlisting I’ll have the community and resources to contribute to train. I’ve been considering joining army infantry then attempting to switch to CCT once my window comes. Also, if I’m at my opportunity to change MOS to CCT and fail, will I have the option to go to a different job, or are you automatically put back into your old career?
You're asking questions involving more than retraining, if you want to retrain in the Air Force that's one thing, but doing Army to then do an inter-service transfer from Army to Air Force is completely separate. If you want to do CCT join the Air Force and do Security Forces, I can't recommend this is ideal by any means, but that's really our only "Combat" AFSC besides Special Warfare AFSCs. If you join the Air Force get a job in something you want to do and then retrain from there into Special Warfare or attempt to, CCT is pretty full a lot of times so you'll probably struggle to get into it if you join the Air Force with another job. Best thing to do for simplicity sake and not to deter yourself is prepare and then enlist as Spec War.
Yea, what the other guy said. You may not know it, but you're asking a VERY loaded, complicated and not related question. Just because it's all the Armed Forces doesn't mean they all speak, talk to each other, or operate the same. That's okay, I didn't know that either. Your time in the Army won't necessarily line up with Air Force so your "window" if you're in the Army, won't matter to the Air Force. So no it won't, you'll have to start all over for that retrain window, but your time in service will still county. And I mean..if you're looking to do a combat job, then no...don't do the Air Force. Yes we definitely have those opporutnities for select jobs and if you're lucky. but the chances are, you should go Army or Marines for a better chances or "direct" jobs to combat. CCT, yes will be a combat type of job. Idk how much that helps because you're question is all over the place. That is okay, I'm just trying to help.
Hello, I'm stationed in Japan and want to retrain into TACP. I know about the PAST and all of that, how soon do I need to start this process? My DEROS is May 2024, I can't find much on my window on being overseas. I would think the retraining window would be different? Just wondering if you know anything about that.
hey David. if I submit multiple jobs (5 max I believe) on my retraining package, could I be approved/qualify for multiple and have the ability to choose which one I fully go through with?
Hello! They may ask, just to be conversational with you. But no you won’t. That “choosing” you’re talking about is exactly what you said in the first part of your comment. Unfortunately at that point it would just go to the needs of the Air Force and if you qualify for five jobs it would be like oh which one does this person most fit and which one do we need right now
My career advisor told me that if I was qualified for all five, that I would get to choose? Was your source for your information your career advisor? I hope mines not wrong!😬
I am not sure about the Guard and the manning might be different between active and guard. I am not totally sure. You would have to look those up or ask a Guard recruiter. But essentially, yes to all lol.
Hello! Im a FTA and i submitted my retraining package about 3 weeks ago cuz i was finally eligible. It says on mypers that it’s at AFCC review after it’s been at the CFM… Any idea on how long it might take for me to hear anything back and what happens next?!
Hello! Sorry I don’t know that kind of information. But you’ve already made it way farther than I have! Eventually you’ll get that notification for retraining!
Where would you look to see what AFSC the air force need so I can maximize my chance of getting out of my career field? Edit: In fact what are most easiest jobs to cross train into?
Are you already active duty? Because the general populace can’t see that. I don’t really know that information because it kind of depends. The answer is, whatever the Air Force wants and someone somewhere decides that based on “something”. But security forces is always taking people and any career field that is low manned, which changes every so often.
A retraining package is all of the paperwork you need in one PDF file, multiple different AF Forms put into a "package" which is not a resume. It is an application to retrain you aren't advertising your skills, unless you've done schooling or have additional certifications which could set you apart from other people, but even so they aren't really taken into consideration. Its more of hey I applied is there a spot, yes or no, and if so you'll get it depending on how many people apply. FTAs get top priority to retrain when you apply
Can I submit supporting documents on the initial application submission? I want to add a certification that's a part of the tech school process but I want to get it before I apply
Yes you can, but if it’s not required I wouldn’t even add it. If you start adding more crap to your package that’s not needed, it’s to my understanding, they’ll just look passed it any ways.
@@DavidCapperino Dang, well the job I want doesn't go to the board but straight to the CFM but we'll see if it's even on this list next month when it drops
Hi, I’m going to bmt on April 13th. I’m an FTA currently enlisting into fuels on a 4 year contract and plan to cross train/ retrain out of it at year 3. Can we only cross train/ retrain for jobs available to fill in or any job we qualify for? How can we get research/ permission into immersions for these different jobs while still fulfilling our obligation to our current afsc?
In regards to your first question, yes. You need to have that AFSC's required ASVAB score and the AFSC needs to be available and have openings under the "FTA" category on MyPers. You can retake the ASVAB at any point in your career an unlimited amount of times. The only test you can't is the AFOQT if you're trying to commission. You may only take it twice, and they count your most _recent_ score, not the highest. As for the second, you really can't. You need to do your own research or talk to people in that career field. If you're POL, the Air Force won't let you be a linguist or intel for a day to intern.
Depends how far along you are with your contract. But yes, if you’ve passed your retrain window and you extend then you are just further out of your window.
I am a retrain. I was on a 6 year contract but I ended up extending for a year. I was able to submit my package at my 71 month mark (just shy of my 6th year but still had 13 months left because I extended). After my package was submitted, I was approved for my first choice AFSC. I think the Air Force really just needs the applicant (you) to have enough retainability, or time, to be able to submit that package and get approved. It took a few months after submitting before I found out I was approved.
Ehh not really but kind of. I would need more details answer your questions. But basically if you miss your window you were either looking at reenlisting or going guard or reserve to cross train
How is COVID affecting this window? My son was ready to drop paperwork for cross training last year, then COVID hit. Also, if he takes a new assignment, how difficult is it to get the opportunity to cross train after this window?
That’s a tough call I think it did for awhile and it really depends where they’re cross training in to. And it depends on the assignment if it’s CONUS or OCONUS. Sorry! A lot of information. I need more details

But if you’re stateside and miss your window, you basically have to re-enlist is what I was told which isn’t entirely true for what I’m doing.
Good question! I spoke to my career advisor and he told me that you actually take the AFQT since you’re already in the Air Force. The caveat to that is whatever you score on the AFQT will replace your ASVAB score, even if you score worse in other areas.
@@MaseFade interesting, are you talking about the AFOQT? I thought that was only the officer test. You can definitely take the ASVAB again in your career.
