- Empress Masako is only the second woman to become empress of Japan, after her husband Naruhito took the Chrysanthemum Throne.
The pressures of royal life took a considerable toll on her and she struggled publicly with mental health, but now seems to be getting to be getting a chance to put her extensive diplomacy skills to use.

Mental illness can affect anyone. I am glad her husband stood by her.
emperor naruhito is a gentleman and empress masako is a beautiful lady! tenno heika banzai!
Harry and Meghan whining about how hard their life is so fickle and fake they don't know real pain, Empress Masako is true Victim. Her husband made a statement they didn't create a circus around her and demand public sympathy, she genuinely had a problem and retreated from public life to deal with her issues. Japan people might not have understood what was wrong but they accepted it. The more you complain the more you lose sympathy.
@@maragathm Yeah, Emperor Naruhito (previously Crown Prince) had a conflict and i heard he was very angry toward the Imperial Household Agency for a pressure and expectation put into her.
@@maragathm People are not obligated to follow a path because they were born in an imperial family. If Harry and Megan chose another path, that is okay. To be honest both Masako and her mother in law (the dowager empress) were kinda forced into the marriage because the other guy was a crown prince. Imaging what an excellent diplomat she could've been.
Exactly. It wasn’t a fairy tale. It was a nightmare for her. An intelligent career woman locked in a cage. And could possibly have been asked to give up someone she loved before marrying the prince. Who is hardly the catch physically and not to mention the baggage he represents
I would love to see her make it her mission, if possible, to combat the stigma surrounding mental illness in Japan. Mental illness has such a profound impact on society and must be faced like any other illness, less it lead to tragedy.
The nail that sticks up gets hammered down. People who have serious mental illness in Japan are crushed like stamping out a cockroach.
I find Her Majesty so beautiful. She's not the generic Japanese beauty, she is more like of a Southeast Asian kind of features to me. So cute!
what a lovely couple. i feel bad about the high expectations and restrictions regarding the japanese royal family tho and issues of heirs and whatnot. empress masako seem very poised and elegant. i love the way the royal couple sat face to face with their people. such mutual respect and reverence between royal family and subjects.
My Japanese mother in the past talked about most people in Japan felt sorry for Masako for the longest time. "She is our Princess Diana. A strong woman who was connected to the people and wanted to do great things in her own right...but the royal family decided to mentally beat her to submission."
HitomiNoRyu 😞😞
Before reading your comment, I was about to say that she reminds me of Princess Diana for reasons I can't explain.
Difference is at least her husband didn't abandon her like Charles did
Or that she isn't hounded by the press to the point of directly causing her death in a car crash.
The difference is that Empress Masako’s husband really loves her.
She has been embarrassed for many years because of the failure to give a birth to a son. Japan should change the law to allow a female heir to take the Chrysanthemum Throne. Without presence of a royal concubine, it is not realistic to limit a heir of it to only a male.
I wont to see a future wife of the last male heir suffer from the same fate as hers.
it is because of stupid us always interfere with other country's law and rule. waay back then, ancient times, there were head empress. but because us girl are not allowed to succeed anymore.
Reigen Lucilfer The 1947 imperial household law was passed at he last session of Imperial diet. The law which defined that a male heir only can succeed the throne was passed relatively recently. The law was largely influenced by Prussian law system and assumes that there was an implicit agreement, which prioritize a paternal bloodline, in past successions.
The fact is that Youro-Ritsuryo, an effective law before modernization just specifies a descendant of an emperor, who was not given a family name, can succeed it. So, a female heir was not prevented from succeeding it. There were actually many empress. One empress called Jingu-Kogo was not regarded as empress now. But she was apparently gave a birth to a male heir after her husband, the previous emperor was killed hundreds of days ago. The modern Japanese history denied her enthronement. But, her boy was not able to be called one in the paternal line. So, the early Japan did not prevent a female heir from taking the throne.
If they think women can’t rule than why is Queen Elizabeth so love by her county and people all around the world?
@@moonlightpaw5868 It's far more complicated than that because it involves the Shinto religion.
Every country has their own laws.
She would be a hero if she ran a nation wide massive campaign through all the prefectures towns and islands about why mental health care is something that you shouldn’t be ashamed of or feel bad about going. Everyone needs a little help sometimes.
But she didn't and I suppose she won't. Instead she has chosen to visit hospitals, nursing homes or supporting groups and talks with the locals side by side. Many said they got confident to be heard by a person who has struggled together in a same manner with them, and got empowered. She is compassionate in her own way.
Soo cute. Love Empress.
The Emperor's only child, Aiko. Her parents are the multi-lingual Emperor and Empress. The Empress was a former diplomat. They live modestly. They are the pride of Japan. What do you think of everyone in the world ? Aiko is the emperor's only child, but she cannot be the emperor. The reason is that, according to the rules of the Imperial Family, it is a male succession. The Empress, who was unable to give birth to a boy, was blamed within the Imperial Family and is still in poor health. How can there be such inequality in this day and age?
I want Aiko to be emperor.

No they were humans. Not gods or goddesses. 🤔😑😲😆😆😆 asian cultures strange and boring.
@@bluesky-pb9di because It was ancient mythology, Japanese Monarchy was one of the oldest surviving in the world. Even if not world at least in asian. The reliable historiographical evidence could at least be trace back from the 6th century while traditionally they claimed from 3rd century. I mean all ancient monarchy have some kind of myth going around them, especially since Japan ancient myth and beliefs system continue to exist as part of culture. During the world war 2 the goverment used it in education as a form of propaganda to keep the loyalty of citizen bur nowadays modern Japanese is non believer of religious. While they believe the existence of god they have no religion, Shinto was nothing more than culture🤔. Sorry, I am getting excited explaining.😅 but you know you are right, Korean ancient founding king had a myth of son of a bear and god. The bear became woman if i am not mistaken.🤔😑
@D S Where is the source of the DNA study ? As far as i know, only one Japanese Empress was allowed to make a DNA test and confirmed to be Korean descent while other tomb of Japanese Emperor was not allowed to study. There were only a theory about Japanese Emperor descent from a nobility in Korean peninsular.
Many Japanese respect the current Emperor and strongly hope that his eldest daughter, Her Imperial Highness Princess Aiko, will succeed to the throne.
I say they should have went ahead and changed Japanese law to allow the first born man or woman to inherit lot of problems down the road and take a lot of strain off of women who become the empress
I wish all the best and hope people will learn the true ways to live, wherever they are whatever their background.
I hope Japan will still amend its royal succession laws to allow heiresses to take the throne. It's utterly ridiculous to allow so much talent to go to waste.
Agreed
You go Empress!! Strong woman!!
I am very proud. I did not know that the Empress has such an important role after WW2, when the U.S. changed the Empire of Japan completely
I too think that being an empress will actually fulfill her much more bcse I guess she now has more latitude of operation. I think her upbringing and personal accomplishments pre- marriage didn't square in spending 2.5 decades performing ceremonial roles and abiding by millennial rules and customs.
Talk about a stark contrast between the Prince of Wales and the Japanese Emperor. Both had wives who suffered mental illness, yet despite society and Royal expectations the Emperor stood by his Empress. Yet Prince Charles could not have cared less how much his wife suffered, as long as he got his heir and spare.
Charles didn’t force Diana to marry him. And Diane has not been a career woman with any sort of accomplishments. Anyway the emperor destroyed her life. The least he could do was being decent to her. He didn’t have to of course. But should she be grateful just for that?

Of course today there is no Japanese nobility, all are commoners except the Imperials.
To those who are confused why the Japanese Imperial Family is the oldest continuing royal dynasty, here's why: The bloodline the started from Antiquity (around 660 BC) all the way up to the Present was never broken. But if you are familiar with Japanese history, there was period in time from 530AD until 1867 called the Warring States period where the Samurai and Shoguns (feudal warlords) engaged in constant warfare for power and territorial control. This is similar to Medieval Europe. During this period, the role of the Emperor never ceased, but rather power and control over the country was being absorbed by the Shogun. The Samurai and Shogunate came to an end during the Meiji Restoration in the late 1800's and full power was returned to the Emperor and the Imperial family. This is what you usually see in popular Samurai movies ☺
