During this seminar, Ian McFarlane discusses design of mat foundations and soil-structure interaction. The session describes the uses of mat foundations, historical perspectives that have led to the current procedures, and discuss soil properties and soil-structure interaction. Guidance is provided for proportioning, analysis, and design for mat foundations. Code requirements and accepted approaches to their implementation are also addressed, with additional discussion on best practices that go beyond code minimum requirements. Finally, detailing and constructability tips are presented. The scope of this session includes design of mat foundations for both non-seismic and high-seismic conditions.
