Oh wow THX 🙏🏼 I was always quick rinsing Chinese teas while never rinsing japanese teas and now I'm learning to rinsing old teas only! Thank you I've learned much! 🙏🏼
This confirms my own experience with rinsing the leaves... except that even with aged teas, if I don't detect any fishy or musty smell, I skip the rinse and add a little extra time to the first steep. I've been glad every time that I didn't wash away that rich flavor and aroma.
We agree! As long as you’re drinking clean tea from a reputable source (the ONLY kind anyone should be drinking 😜), rinsing is simply a step to regulate flavor extraction and is totally based on preference. We often don’t rinse our aged teas either - like you say, that deep flavor can be quite enjoyable.
Question: I bought a cake of 2023 Yunnan Moonlight White tea. I know it's a delicate tea, but the cake is dry. Would you recommend a short rinse before drinking it?
I like rinsing just to get some of the “dust” off my tea cakes. But that’s just because it passes through my mesh strainer because of how fine it is. It just improves the mouth feel for myself

We do typically recommend a quick rinse for any aged tea.

I rinse to remove the overly bitter notes from my pu'erh. Helps round out the flavor
Call me cheap but I don't rinse my tea just to get that extra cup. 😉
❤
I only rinse puerh
Many chinese teas have pretty aggressive pesticides
