  • I demonstrate the thermostat replacement on Honda on the 2003 - 2007 Honda Accord 2.4L K24 engine. This procedure applies to Honda Element 2003 - 2006, the 2003 - 2008 Odyssey and other Honda's with the K24A engine. This was done as part of preventive maintenance on a high mileage car to prevent overheating.
Thermostats are a critical component of the cooling system. Thermostats may become stuck on or off when they fail. Ideally, a thermostat should be replaced when other critical components of a cooling system are replaced e.g. radiator, water pump etc.

Although most manufacturers do not provide guidance for replacing the thermostat, it's one of those parts that should be replaced as part of preventive maintenance in high mileage cars. Especially when critical components of the cooling system are replaced.

I greatly appreciate this video - I have a 2007 Accord. I can't get the bottom left screw. I've tried almost every different size ratchet and extension but can't get the necessary leverage for the last screw. I know it's a Size 10 but ..... just frustrated as I got everything drained, hose off and 2 of 3 screws off in minutes. I'll keep at it ........

    • @DIYAutoworksNG

Yep. A stuck open thermostat is a potential culprit. Low coolant, bad heater core valve and a few others.

Combustion engines have a relatively basic setup and Gumout should work on the Elantra once the steps from the manufacturer are followed correctly.

When I got to your "lightbulb" moment on my car, that part would not budge. Had to break it and get a new one at NAPA. I swear Honda makes this hard this on purpose. Two hours later - I also could not remove the two bottom bolts. Rusted in place. Took it to my mechanic. Will never own a Honda again.

To change the thermostat, do you have to drain the coolant or can it be changed without draining?

    • @DIYAutoworksNG

You have to, but I would imagine it can be done without draining if you have a clamp on the lower radiator hose. I won't want to subject the hose to the stress though..

first issue i had was that the heater control valve broke.
The center screw came right off and started leaking coolant and overheated the car.
I replaced it and test drove it but i noticed the temp gauge was going up and assumed the thermostat stood closed since it overheated,
i also replaced the thermostat. I test drove it and again it started over heating at this point i check the radiator and i noticed a small leak from one of the plugs in the bottom.
i replaced the radiator and again overheating issues. the fans work. the thermosensor works too. any suggestions?

keep in mind it was the same coolant for the thermostat. However when I was replacing the radiator I did the flush & the last 2 small tubes at the bottom of the radiator were the last 2 to disconnect when I did this dark water came out of what was left I assume of coolant and that was about it.

A bad thermostat that is stuck open can cause a high idle, but "so high" is subjective. Is it a Toyota? If yes, did you reset the ECU recently, take off the battery terminals or clean the throttle body, and didn't do an idle speed relearn? Those will cause a high idle.

Both fans turn on when AC is engaged, but neither fan turns on with a hot engine with the heater going full blast. Does that mean the thermostat needs to be replaced?

    • @DIYAutoworksNG
      @DIYAutoworksNG  9 месяцев назад

You may want to look at your coolant temperature sensor/switch. I'd go there before the thermostat except if they're integrated.

@@DIYAutoworksNG I replaced both and still the fans don't turn on unless AC is engaged or the switch wiring is jumped with a paper clip. When I turn the heater up full blast, it doesn't get hot really. Maybe the water pump is the issue.

Honda calls it "Thermostat assembly (Nippon Thermostat)". You can order it here www.hondapartscheap.com/v-2003-honda-accord-sedan--lx--5-speed-automatic/engine--water-pump-l4
      It's number 8.
I actually kept the part for a buddy of mine whose Accord doesn't have a thermostat and he's on a budget.
I'd let you know if he goes with something else. Obvious caveat is that my car had over 255k miles before I removed this.
