- Kristin Beck served in the elite U.S. Navy SEALs as a male for over 20 years. In 2011, she retired from the Navy and began transitioning into the woman she is today. In the above interview with Daily Xtra’s Lucas Silveira, Beck discusses coming out as a trans woman and how the U.S. Navy SEAL community reacted. Beck’s story is told in the documentary, Lady Valor: The Kristin Beck Story. The doc screened recently at TIFF Bell Lightbox and is now available on Netflix.

Ask any gay person or transgender, doesn't matter, and I guarantee you 99.999% of them will tell you they were born that way which is why there isn't and will never be a cure. If you happento not know this guy, it's because your not working in medecine and he's not some sort of "star people" for some gossip paper.
Just , let me explain you HOW important this guy is :
-He is a major contributor of the DSM 3/4/5 edition.
You know, THE book used worlwide as a standard in the psychiatric field , created for the APA .
-The ICD is the 2nd book use principaly in Europe for mental disorder diagnosis , it is very broad but we still use the DSM as a reference , for now. In time , the DSM will be supressed but is knowledge will be added in the ICD , so we will only have 1 book for the WHO (World Health Organization) ( it's simple and less costly).
-This guy was from 1975 till 2001 was the Henry Phipps Professor of Psychiatry and the director of the Department of Psychiatry and Behavioral Science at the Johns Hopkins University.
AND
At the same time, he was psychiatrist-in-chief at the Johns Hopkins Hospital.
He is currently University Distinguished Service Professor of Psychiatry at Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine.
-The Johns Hopkins Hospital is widely regarded as one of the world's greatest hospitals .
1st rank for 21 consecutive years (1991-2011) and only down to 3rd rank recently.
-And this guy made huge critical studies in psy field and is considerated as one of the most important and influencable doctor among his peers and broad physicians .

He's like the commander of an army and you, just a little baby in his cradle , in comparison.
So , do you really think that a man so high estimaded , recognized as one of the best among the best , by physicians and researchers Worldwide will be a poor source ?
I hate the fact he's a catholic (since i'm an atheist) but, frankly , there is no fucking way i'm going to say THIS guy is a joke as a physician , never.
So , either you did not know anything about him and look up for rule1 and rule2 .

What an amazing interview. Kristin Beck is a thoughtful, intelligent human being. She has an inner beauty. She will never "pass" or "go stealth" but who cares. Her humanity and empathy, to me, means that she is beautiful.

Shakester71 She never served in Special Forces. She served in Naval Special Warfare which is Special Operations. Special Forces is the brand name of the Army’s Special Operations Team's, aka the Green Berets. There is only one SF and it's Army.

I will never forget how the Navy recruiter asked me if I was gay about ten times. When I asked the other one who was my neighbor why he asked so many times he said ' The living quarters are so tight and blah,blah that will never fly here''. About fifty percent of our ship was lesbians and the medical corps, officers and pilots had many gay guys who stay in for twenty or thirty years. More LGBTQ veterans make careers out of it then hetero's like me who bailed out half way through my enlistment when I realized they would never keep their promises to me. Gays never ,ever get thrown out because so many join the service as a closet. That was in the eighties I am sure it may have changed since.

Nothing about her story makes sense. If you really believe that you're a woman, & you have such a hard time being a man, why would you go through all that effort to be in a mans world (i.e: the military), being the cream of the crop (I.e: the SEALS), just to be "liberated" after leaving the military? Doesn't seem like being a man was that difficult, given that you were accepted into SEAL team 6; really, the cream of the crop of the SEALS.
Why put all that effort in the first place?

What he really is, is insecure with his own sexuality. People like Kristin do what he did to protect himself from his own emotions and to prove he wasn't what he knew he was. He wasn't accepting himself so he became someone he wasn't so no one would find out how he felt. But when he had enough of the lies to himself, he became what he always was, a woman. Doesn't matter when he did, the important thing for him is that he did. And simply put, if it were no one's business in the first place she wouldn't have had to suffer in her own skin.

+C.S. K. Let me sum it up simply for you then. She joined the military in hopes that being a tough navy seal would make her "normal" and to hide how she felt not only from others, but from herself. When she realized it wasn't working and she was still miserable because she was acting in a way she didn't feel, she had to be true to herself and "come out" and in order to be happy in her own skin she had to do it no matter what anyone else thought of her.
