- The personal fortune of the Prime Minister Rishi Sunak and his wife Akshata Murty surged by more than £120 million over the past year.
The latest annual Sunday Times Rich List revealed their wealth grew substantially despite the wider UK billionaire boom coming “to an end” in the face of tough economic conditions.
Mr Sunak and Ms Murty’s wealth was £651 million in the latest list, soaring from £529 million in 2023.

The poor gets poorer in recessions whilst pensioners and kids go days without food
As a 79 year old I can honestly say I don't know of a "poor" pensioner.Even if you have only the state pension to live on there are so many things pensioners can claim over and above the basic pension. If a pensioner "goes days without food" then they are not managing their money well. We all need to get priorities right

I DO know many pensioners who are living below the breadline. You don’t speak for anyone else so don’t patronise others.
Yes some parents are very poor with their finances, but millions of children are simply not walking around with pop bellys. And eating straw. We still have a majority of school children living a normal life. But I take your point, there are thousands of children going without. And that is a tragedy party parents and government letting children down.
I think things are often exaggerated. I see things on the news, but I haven’t seen anyone skip meals or hungry kids. It may be true in rare cases where parents haven’t tried for their children. I see people driving cars above their pay bands, taking holidays twice a year ( Has anyone seen the masses of people at Heathrow flying out?), eating out, getting smashed on the weekends….generally spending the money they have. They may not be rich, but I certainly don’t see poverty. I think people exaggerate things. One of my tenants in a house is a nurse. She is on 25k and is from India. She goes back twice a year, and now has purchased my property along with her husband who came after her and who works as a carer and gets less than her. All in 3 years. From village dwellers in India to home owners in UK in three years. So if a couple of young Indians from a remote village can succeed, why can’t people born here do the same? Their success ay not be major, but it’s a real good step up for them. They had no one to help them! Some people just give up and plead poverty. There has always been rich people around. No one complains about footballers earning 20k a week or rock stars earning many millions a year.

Its just obscene. That any one person could have that much money. He cant possibly spend it all. Imagine if you were invited to visit someone you know for a meal. And you get there and that person is sitting at a table waiting for you, and has food piled high to the ceiling, cakes, pastries, curry, chips, chicken, the works, mountains of food. And when you ask about it he says "No this is all mine! You cant have any of this..."

Well, those who knowingly voted for the Tories and Brexit and were aware of the potential have so much to answer for. I don't begrudge them their cash. I do think tho it's time we had a PM thats from the same social background as the majority of the public, these folks from the old boys private schools have been brought up never wanting, never having to go a day without food or electric nor having to choose between food or heat or having to live hand to mouth for years on end. While they can sympathise they cannot empathise with the majority of the people they govern because it's a completely different world from 99% of the population. Just my thoughts.
